I'd like to know you fella's opinion on the subject of a co-operative play mode for Half-Life 2, or Half-Life Source ;)

I personally think it would be fun to have a co-op mode. I forsee it might impose some limitations on the npc's and how they interactive... but It'd still be fun I think.

i think it would be fun, but it's probably something that modders will have to come up with. I liked the Sven Coop version of HL1 coop, it was pretty cool. I'm sure someone will do something like with HL2.

It WILL be a coop mod, "SVEN COOP"...and i think it will rock.

Edit: This poll is silly, sorry.
I voted "NO" because i know that there will be no COOP mode for HL2, it will be made after HL2 is released.

Yeah, I tried Sven co-op once, but I never took the time to get into it. But I think you should be able to play through the whole single player sequence with your buddies.

What i meant was Sven coops SP conversion to coop in HL1, not sven coop in general. That's what i thought this whole thread was about, HL2's single player being coop-able...

You certainly can use Sven Co-Op to play through HL with your buddies. Valve haven't got the time to make an official modification to encorporate Co-Op play so they've stated that they'll be helping out Sven Co-Op a lot. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sven Co-Op team is the next mod team to be employed by Valve. They'll do a great job on the HL2 version./

It wouldn't seem right playing a game meant for a single focus with many people.

Yeah, your right that's what it's about. I wasn't aware you could use sven coop to play HL1's single player.

I voted "Dont Care" because I only ever play coop on console games :)

I wouldnt use it much but it would be a nice feature and would probably make the game even MORE available = more ppl wanna make mods for it :-D

I voted I don't care because ther is going to be a co-op mod. :) Sven Co-op.

Whoops, I voted yes because there is going to be a co-op mod :|

i think this is the most reasonable expectations of them all about mp. more so than cs2 or tf2...
and honestly, i would be MORE than pleased w/ a coop mode as mp!!

I put 'don't care', although I would like to see a separate co-op game, like Decay 2.

ive given sven coop a chance on 3 seperate occasions, twice online once at a lan.

At the lan the game was great, because u could organize stuff with ur friends easier, online its a completely out of control fragfest.

Ehh, not if you are on serious servers.

I have had some very fun times playing with people that are serious about the game, not 10 year olds.

Voted don't care, Sven Coop will take care of everything. :)

I really don't care if HL2 ships with Co-Op, but maybe when the Valve team gets some free time, then It would be ok...But they already know about Sven Co-Op 2

as many others voted, i too think HL2 should have a Co-op mode.
it is fun clearing the game with friends :)

my personal feelings about Sven Co-op are that while it tries to have that Co-op atmosphere and such.. it just doesn't do it like having a real Co-op mode would.

i hope Valve rethinks this and at a later date add Co-op mode to the game.. not sure if thats possible.. i hope it is.. :)

Yeah I hope it is too... but if somebody from valve magically reads this... forget about it, finish what your doing now, you can add it later on with a patch or something. ;)
Assuming it's not already planned. ;)

well umm...when was the last pc game with co-op?

now you see why you only play co-op on console ;)
i only can remember serious sam. the game wasnt that great, but co-op made it so much better.

Voted "Yes." But we all know it probably won't.

*hint-hint* Sven Co-Op 2 */hint-hint*

:)

Voted no.
Sven-coop will be awesome and coop is just great fun but having played through Sven-coop HL SP on LAN I realized that a lot of the great moments were messed up or cut out to accomodate more players. Playing with someone else is always fun but the experience doesn't get beyond that novelty and is kind of shallow (but fun). That is why a coop version of HL2 SP would be a good mod but not a good 'official' portion of the game.
A game designed completely as a coop game with scenes built specifically for two or more players would be sweet, though maybe not a good business choice (which is why mods are so important).

i heard that sven coop team announced they would NOT be making Sven Coop 2, a single player based mod like the 1st one(as in it wont be a coop remake of the single player game like the 1st mod was).

correct me if im mistaken please. thats just what i heard.

It's still up in the air. they are deciding if they will put hl2 single player maps in sven coop 2, but sven or sniper or whoever seems to think it would be too much work to do for first release.

I don't see Sven 2 being a straight co-op run through HL2.

In their position, I'd make co-op missions based on events in HL2, but designed for co-operative play. That would work much better than normal singleplayer with multiple spawn points...

lol i forgot all about that sorry bro. pm on what you want :)

I think they should definitely have co-op, even though I am 99.999% sure that they won't. Sven Co-Op on the other hand...

anyone know why developers shy away from Co-op modes?
im really curious because so many gamers want this mode.. yet most PC games don't have it.

the last very popular title to have Co-op was Quake2 right? hmm... i wonder what dev teams saw after that to not bother with Co-op modes.

Because it's a cast-iron bitch to implement. All the testing that you do to make sure that players can't break the game gets harder when you have to factor in multiple players. You also have to adjust difficulty levels and retest. It's a lot of work for very little gain.

fine..
still not a satisfactory answer for me tho.. but i understand.

i do wanna say tho, if it came down to charging an extra $5 or $10 dollars for the game as long as the Co-op mode were included, i would still happily purchase it.. :)

Why is it not satisfctory?

There's two types of co-op. There's the Quake 2 type, which is just Quake 2 with multiple spawn points. And there's the "proper" type, where the missions are designed around co-op (multiple objectives, seperate paths etc)

The Quake 2 type is easy to implement, but it's a bitch to test for. One of the things that testers do is try and break the game. Things like trying to get over walls, behind buildings. Everything they shouldn't, basically. Now imagine trying to test with that for 2 players. Or 4. Or 8. Suddenly, there's a hell of a lot more things that can be broken, because there's several people working together (for instance - standing on another player to get somewhere you shouldn't be able to). So testing for all this, then fixing it, then retesting makes it a nightmare.

The "proper" co-op is hard to implement because it's effectively built from the ground up as a co-op game. So that's development over and above the normal game.

That's why developers don't add co-op :)

ow... but i really like the "quake 2 type" co-op :)
as i've said in another topic, i would've bought doom3 if it had that kind of co-op out of the box. Now i've played the entire singleplayer story at a friends', and maybe i'll play it 1 more time, but that's it. With co-op you extend a game's lifetime more than with deathmatch or the sorts.

(for instance - standing on another player to get somewhere you shouldn't be able to). So testing for all this, then fixing it, then retesting makes it a nightmare.
Well.... why don't they disable the ability for players to jump on one another? they did that in unreal co-op.....

Sven Coop had the entire HL campaign avaliable for multiple players, I see absolutely no reason whatsoever why Sven Coop 2 should not. It's not just a simple matter of adding multiple spawn points, either. Enemies have to be rebalanced, as do weapon and ammo placements. Let the mod makers worry about wether or not multiple players will break the single player game and make it more trouble than it's worth. In the meantime, I'm still wanting it.

As to what other games have COOP since Q2? What about Diablo II, Ghost Recon, the Rainbow Six series, or Serious Sam? Coop is definately a great feature to have, I wish more games incorparated it. Hell, even the hacked together coop I played for Far Cry was a blast.
