CoD2 gameplay video

me too ...watched the first 30 seconds looks nice

-nervously walks into thread-
...o-o-old! -screams-
-runs away and dives into a hole-

With that aside,
It's oldie but definitely a goodie!
Sure it's scripted as hell, but so was the original CoD.

Is it the video with the Omaha beach landing?

looks good, scripted to death, hope it'll be more than a graphical update, wonder what mp will be like?

My first impression- before even bothering to view that movie- is to go "gaaah, I don't care anymore!" and dive behind the nearest piece of furniture.

But that said, I'll probably give it a go at some point, since I'm such a shallow FPS-craving kind of guy. My problem is that- what with MoA, Brothers in Arms, the first CoD and all- there's not really anything else they could do in the 1940s setting to keep my interest. But hey, at least it looks good. Hurray!

What isn't scripted in games?

It's looking great, the first CoD was an awesome experience (Berlin, anyone?)

Looks like the combat is gonna be pretty cool. I like that COD2 looks like it'll be giving you a feeling of fighting a large-scale battle. In COD1 most of the time you were alone or with just a few men.

Gfx are pretty good...well the effects are and player models look pretty good. Landscape looks kinda crappy and I don't like how he holds the weapons. It looks like he holds them in front of his stomach straight out.

Wow. I was looking forward to this game. But after watching that I don't feel as excited anymore. It's the same gameplay, weapons, characters, locations as any other WW2 game. I didn't get one spark of joy while watching that. I was looking at the weapons and was like "Yeah, there's the Thompson...again."

I will still probably pick this game up but....meh?

It's the same ... weapons, ... locations as any other WW2 game.

Ah you don't say?

Silly me. Game developers need to create new weapons and locations if they are going to do WW2! We don't want none of this junk that's real, that's no fun!

We will now add the countries of Perblakiztan and add the Death Ray to WW2 games. I mean after all, it gives you more "joy" in the game.

/joking

Anyways, I would love to have you show me another game where you assault Pointe Du Hoc.

This is not Omaha Beach. It did happen in Normandy and was part of D-Day, ,but it's different.

BTW, it doesn't look too scripted to me... Once you are past the cliffs, there is probably a bunch of ways you could go... In a video they can only take you one way, and if the AI reacts as it should, it should provide a "scripted-like" experience.

Ok, it's not the same exact locations, but it looks the same. The one thing that does appeal is being able to play as other countries.

Yeah, it looked heavily scripted but interesting nonetheless. One thing I'm really disappointed about is the lack of ragdoll physics. That's like a must in FPS these days. This game would have been perfect for it. There's only so many times you want to see the same death animation.:dozey:

I never want to see the same death animation. I thought ragdoll was a standard for any game.

there's a lot of material to mine from ww2 ..I love these games to death but I also agree that the settings tend to blur into each other after awhile. so much so that you just know what to expect every time you turn a corner. They need to shake the gameplay up a bit away from the scripted game on rails to something more open ended ...CoD2 promises some of this, hopefully that'll rekindle interest in ww2 games

I'm never tired of the WW2 theme, just these dull MoH clones. The original CoD bored me to tears.

Let's hope that the sequal has a little more soul to it, and less tedious combat.

I can't wait to play this level. I loved the scene in The Longest Day which shows this landing. The scaling of the cliff, the Germans snipping the ropes, the fake artillery, trenchrunning. Ah.

They said they experimented with ragdoll, but it just didn't work out.

The reason being, is that when you look at all these games that have ragdolls, you notice that the ragdolls always seem a bit funny, and not always realistic. If you are going for a sense of realism and immersion, you don't want ragdolls looking funny screwing it up.

Oh, and also considering you have about 20-30 guys on screen at once, you would not be able to run the game on anything less than a high-end machine. That would probably mean a min spec of 3.0ghz p4 or amd equivalent. Does anyone want that? I sure don't.

Plus, there's a lot of things that doing static animations can help with. For example, in the E3 video (not sure if it is in this one, as I haven't downloaded it) there was a part where the guy fired his thompson into a bunker, and when he went back in, one of the guys was lying there on the ground, and was getting out his pistol for a dying breath shot at you.

With ragdolls you either have Dead or Alive (no pun intended on the game). If you wanted to simulate that same effect using ragdoll, you would have to have a static animation put in the death animation somewhere.

funny, the ragdolls don't look so funny in funny .. er I mean Half-Life 2

I can see not using ragdolls for getting hit with a bullet, but when it comes to explosions and falling it should be used.

The ragdolls in HL2 are probably the best and there's really no reason why COD2 can't have it as well.

If BF2 can get ragdolls working on a 32-64 player server, surely they can get it to work in COD2. Granted, BF2's ragdolls are a little quirky, however, they still add more dynamics to the game.

Am I the only one who thinks this game is entirely overhyped, and actually looks a little "CRAP"?

Crap as in, GFX have been overdone, overuse of stencil shadows (?), that sorta thing.

And the textures looked like CRAP.

Crap in the blunt sense.

Nope :D

They better add some new/innovative features about this game or else it will just be crap. :(
And don't anyone say "pfft whats there to add? its just a ww2 fps"

....actually you can say that because I got a feeling that's all CoD2 will be, which is unfortunate ;(

At least the particle effects looked nice...

I believe that for explosions, CoD2 does use ragdoll effects. However, they are not dynamically created real-time ragdolls.

Simply put, they set up a scene in their animation program, and they record the actual ragdoll data. Then they simply put that in-game. It provides the benefits of looking damn cool (the not real-time ragdoll effects tend to look better... You can get really really picky with them as an animator, unlike when they are actually real-time you have to give a set of properties and hope for the best), and it also provides the huge benefit of a performance hit.

satch919: How many characters are on screen at-once was a key thing, and how many are dying how fast? Also, BF2 is mainly multiplayer, so you don't have to worry about running the intense AI on around 20-30 on-screen characters at once (and don't forget the AI for some characters you don't see). BF2's SP has 16 bots max, and let's face it, they aren't as complicated as CoD2's AI clearly. (They weren't designed to be anyways, hehe).... And also, when running CoD2 SP, you are pretty much just running a localclient for the game, and thus you need to do a few server functions, and keep track of every unit.

Oh and about HL2 having extremely realistic rag dolls.

You're right how silly of me.

I think it'd be great if they combined the ragdolls with animations. Hitman 2 actually did it to a limited extent, though it happened very rarely, and it looked great. If you could get an animation going and then have the body go limp in a certain place during the death, it'd look fantastic and would lack the repetitive feel that normal death animations have.

Yes I'm waiting to see a game which does this properly. It seems weird in HL2 that you can shoot a metrocop in the toe, and he'll gently crumple onto the floor like a sack of spuds :O

I'm really hoping Valve will combine animation and ragdoll for the deaths in DoD:S.

Didn't Freedom Fighters and FEAR do this?

I haven't played either of those, so they could well have done....

I dont think many games have actually....actually i'm not sure if any have.

Agreed :)

This is something i've been thinking about for a while. No matter how good ragdolls get, it's not as satisfying as shooting a bad guy in the neck in Perfect Dark and watching the resulting 'sink to the floor, grasping your neck and making gurgling sounds' animation. Or shooting one in the foot and watching him hop around in pain, or in the hand and watch him drop his gun and shake it around furiously.

Now, combine these animations with ragdolls (it must be possible) and we'll be in for something very special.

The best thing about FEAR (imo) is that the enemy actually react to being shot - they flinch, judder, fall/fly backwards. It feels like you're shooting them. Compare this to HL2, where the enemy does bugger all when being shot (this is the case in most shooters, especially on the pc. It feels more like you're waving a cursor over the bad guys and holding a button down untill they fall over than actually shooting them)

Call me a sicko, but imagine the glee in shooting a bad guy in the nuts, watching him crumple to the floor and making various squealing sounds :) We could take it further, wounded enemies kneeling before you begging for mercy (only to whip out a concealed weapnon)

I'm getting carried away, and off topic :)

There is also a 13 minute video which carries on into the town to find the guns.

You can get it here:
http://www.nofeargaming.com/compone...28/func,fileinfo/filecatid,233/parent,folder/

If you watch that video, you do sort of see those kind of deaths. A German soldier staggers across the battlefield clutching his gut with his arm outstretched and another is seen trying to crawl away before being shot in the back.

Lets hope for more of those kind of deaths.

It looks like it will be intense the first time through, but replayability will probably be quite hindered.

It's sad that people will actually buy this game.

How many times can they get away with revamping some crappy beach-rush scene? You even get that annoying stunned viewpoint the moment you step off the boat, which happens in all set-pieces from MoH and CoD.

Thats what the multiplayer part of the game is for :D

There's gonna be vehicles and larger maps apparently.
