Ok, so I ventured into MP today for Company of Heroes after I beat the campaign.

I got slaughtered. Every time.

After losing like 5 times in a row I just quit out of frustration at not being able to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

So I come to you. What are some effective build orders and strategies for 1vs1 fighting? I can't seem to nail it. The part where I'm failing is right at the beginning, I think. I think I just don't know what to capture/secure first and it seems like everywhere I turn there's a damn MG nest before I even get a chance to build mine. Also, when I do get an MG nest it ends up not freaking firing at the enemy!

Also, I HATE AT guns!!!!!.

Fuel points.

Get them ASAP.

They should be what your first engi squad goes for. Find the most reasonably placed one (prolly about halfway through the map or so) and take it, then defend it with your life.

Most strategies revolve around that.

As for AT guns, circle them with a jeep or a tank or something. They won't be able to turn around fast enough to pull a shot off at you. Rushing them with inf works really well too.

And don't bother with MG NESTS. Go for MG squads. In fact, the first building I get to as Axis is usually the one that yields MGs. As for US, you NEED the barracks, so the building that supplies MG's prolly wont come to you for a while.

Jeeps and motorcycles work well as quick means of getting out there and making sure that the MGs don't go up in the first place.

oh, by mg nests I meant mg crews, sorry.

I figured :p

Still, same thing. Beeline for MG crews to defend your oil points! Put them in buildings, and get an inf squad out with them so that you're ready to flank anything that comes your way.

Do these strats apply to victory point games?

Oh and how about upgrades? Which ones should I get first and which ones are worth it? I'm starting to figure out the axis upgrades, but how about the allied ones?

http://gamereplays.org/coh/portal.htm - Start watching.

Seriously, it's either this or slowly learn the common things through getting dominated.

In basically every game, SP vs MP is totally different, you have to learn all the little tricks humans do, etc.

I'd post more but I'm a bit busy and there are others here 100000x better than me.

What's your name on CoH anyway ? Mine is robotskip - since we both suck we should have a match, lol. ;)

Even in VP games it's more important to get to the (high) fuelpoints first. It's no use just holding Victory Points. They don't give you any resources and without those, you will lose VP's eventually.

Use the link Destrukt provided. Watching replays (especially with commentary) is the best way to learn the game.

Basically what sinkoman said, have a solid starting strategy and stick to it, the rest comes from your ability to react to new situatios, and how you play the game i.e. sit back and rush for tanks, hit and run with infantry, bit of both. Some of the games can get hectic, but the best advice is to take it to them, dont sit back and let them come as that just makes the game shit and usually evoloves around a huge defensive waiting time then all of sudden a shit loada tanks appear on the map and it just turn into a tedious tank battle which the germans usually win anyway because of their better tanks.

Play aggressively, build up infantry and take it to them from the start, dont go overboard and start rushing into their base, but fight hard to knock them off balance and to sort of force them to throw their orginal tactics out of the window, advance into their territory as far as possible to disrupt their chances of getting supplies, then set you front line, and start piling the rienforcements in.

and micro micro micro
(micro manage)
keep an eye on your units... make sure your tanks are facing the enemy as to avoid rear armor hits... do circles around those pesky AT guns... keep your infantry in the best cover possible and watch out for grenades, c4 etc... you get the idea!

Yeah, I'm actually pretty good at most online games I play and I know MP and SP are radically different, I was just mostly asking to see if there were any good starting strats/basic tips you guys could share.

By the way, my ingame name is Rico21745

Look me up and we'll play.

Whysat? I've been trying to go just WSC --> Tank depot, and it works alright for the most part. Just gotta position everything well and hold em off till you get tanks. Couple times they quit as soon as I rolled an M60 up to their base.

I never use jeeps, just counter snipers with my own snipers (yeah, not always effective, just requires a bit of sneakiness on my part), and as for riflemen I most always go infantry so I just use rangers as soon as I get them, which is usually right around the time I (and/or they) have tanks.

the snipers are a bastard early on, they can take out entire infantry squads with ease, i always have one jeep per three squads
