Ok, I'll admit it's spelled "colour" if you admit that the American way of spelling is all around better!

Well, if Webster had had his way, then words with a silent E would have them dropped. So, it could be worse.

Centre, Sulphur, Aluminium, archaeology, cheque, organise, favour and dialogue ftw.

Color, ftw.

Why add the U? I mean, c'mon, it's a whole-'nother keystoke that isn't really needed.

It makes you seem more intellectual!

Hey, come on, if both Britain and America spelt things the same way there'd be nothing to argue over.

I'm from Canada where it's spelled Colour, but I felt like voting Color.

Only center, check, organize, and favor are spelled differently here :p

Because you aren't adding a u, it was always spelt with a u. A better question is why did Americans bother to change the spellings.

And Sulphur / Sulfur, because its what the american spelling is, maybe you just don't do science because...

Create your own American language instead of slaughtering English. :p

Because we're lazy.

And you can't here the U, along with a lot of other words.

It's "cul-ler," not "cooooluear."

Yeah, but a load of people actually say it 'col-urr' rather than 'cul-luh'.

I can't believe I just read through this thread.

Cuh-lor. The "O" sound is produced by the "OU" over here.

That's it.

Because etymologically speaking, the Greek roots lead to color instead of the britishly formed colour.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/colour

From Latin "color" via Old French "coulour"; in American spelling the 'u' was dropped from colour to conform to the word's Latin origin. In the rest of the English speaking world the 'u' remains.

America decided to take a step backwards, that's all.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/color

The spelling "color" is the spelling preferred by the majority of native English speakers (who are mostly in the US). Originally the spelling of 'colour' without a U was a sanctioned change of the Spelling Reformist Movement, which was not exclusively accepted by Americans, but was much more popular in the US than in other countries where English is the native language. When the movement died out, its changes remained in US English but not in British English and related variants, such as Commonwealth English.

From Old French coulour, from Latin color. In American spelling the 'u' was dropped from colour to simplify the spelling. In British spelling the 'u' remains.

So it's either dumbed down, or taking a step backwards.

We spawned the language, therefore what we say goes. :p

Shamrock FTW. Its like when people pronounce Scone as "Scon". That one little vowel makes all the difference, so ignoring it completly changes the word

I love how people get involved in these spelling matters, it always ends up that the British say: we invented the language, so we're always right!

;)

America because the French who spell it colour saved your assses.

Proper English version thanks - Colour.

Lazy American's version - Color

Whats so hard about adding a u into words??? Honor, Aluminum (god that gets me every time! its ALUMINIUM for pete sake!), color etc etc. sheesh, its almost as if you think you have your own language or something :E

That said, aren't they allowed to spell things how they want? Mean, language is hardly a fixed thing, dost thou thinketh?

LOL. I agree with Dynasty because there are so many words that are in our dictionary that really don't belong.

I agree about that. It's not like they rediscovered it or something :p

Its like someone said 'remove an i from the word as it makes it easier to write' or something.

Color backward is Roloc, which is absolutely orgasmic to repeat at a high frequency. Colour backward doesn't make any sense to me.
