Last time I checked, Max had some very good lighting features in it and quite capable of good lighting without the need for Brazil or Final Render or any of the other hit any key to do all the work programs

Just render it normally, even if it doesn't look good, wouldn't you rather people tell you the truth so you can fix things, or would you rather they all say ooh ahh perfect and it never gets fixed and always looks bad. Yes men suck, but if someone tells you something is crap and then goes into detail why and how you could fix it, those guys are worth listening to and you'll learn more from them than you will from any yes man
