Obviously a synth. Maybe these guys were the frontline of the Seven Hour War?
 
The Combine Guards were intended as mini-boss creatures in the game, crafted from human children combined with highly resistant armour and weaponry. Examine the torso in the video.

Also, highly doubtful they'll be seen in Episode Two.

I wouldn't underestimate them, $keletor. They are(would be) carrying a guard gun, which was shooting no worse than the strider beam.
 
You won't see it in Episode 2. What's more, I don't think it looks anything like what I'd expect from the Combine. Its cumbersome, not very practical, and like John said - ridiculous.
 
Hmm, it looks like a bad ass kicking killing machine to me. I think they'll add it to the game, perhaps as major troop support for the combine.
 
Doesnt look like the combine at all. The style and models now are much better.
 
Before HL2 came out I saw a pic of the Combine guard, I instantly hated it. I hope it doesn't return.

Well, it has a human head, that's the only thing left in it that is "somewhat" organic. I agree, Highlander, it looks very cool, but perhaps not that much of an overwatch troop, rather a more heavy combine.

they look really stupid and not even like combine technology. more like some poorly crafted model from quake or doom or some other monster oriented lame fest.

You know, what is the first thing that comes to my mind when i see a big mean killin' machine is? Small brains. Totaly unHL-ish!
 
Maybe they could re-model it, too make it look my combine-ish?

That is exactly what I was thinking, and considering that the Strogg looked pretty crap, it's a Good Thing that they ditched this enemy and indeed any other enemies like it.
 
This reminds me of the Alien Grunt enemy in HL. For me, this was the most annoying type of enemy in the whole game - heavy, stupid, and causing not so much damage. I'm glad Valve cut it from HL2 out along with other HL enemies.

They just wouldn't die, you kept shooting secondary with your shotgun, and they didn't notice it.
 
This is why I loved them, a true frontline trooper. Stupid, armoured and deadly.

The revolver is your friend in HL1, I never would have made it through hard mode without it.
 
Not combine-ish enough, maybe a random xen creature, but there's no reason for them to be here unless more portal storms happen or something.
 
You can see the same head on the concept for the Synth sniper. Which is actually a design I liked compared to this.
 
I liked it. it was cool. while I lvoe the combine and pretty much all the enemies in h2 there isnt much variety in things to kill. well, not AS much variety as in HL1. that's why I'd like to see more enemies.
 
Doesn't fit with the Synth or the Overwatch. I no like.
 
It looks like dog if dog were a mediocre synth.

The robot camera head is cool though; probably the best part.
 
It's rather pointless now anyway. We have Hunters to fill the big agile baddie-bot role. The Hunter looks cooler, too.
