Combine says: Man Down!

I was listening to Trap town again, and in the part where Gordon shoots the wood support the holds the beam of steel and it crushes all the Combine lads. One of the combine yells out "Man down!" but it sounds all creepy and alien like. Maybe its because of the mask or something like that. But I found it interesting.

What do you lads think?

Been discussed, and I have a thory those dudes arent the combine. I think they are the police force.
EDIT- BTW, did the grunts in the first Half-Life sound at all human? :D Have a nice day.

My crazy theory is the manhacks acctully attach themselves to the spinal cord of humans similar to headcrabs and control the host, in a slightly more ordered mechanical way.

But yeh, If you listen at the beggining of trap town (fade in) you can hear some distant radio chatter, nice and Half-Life-Esque

the grunts over the radio sound like really pissed off, 6'4" 250 lbs black dude with a whippin' stick

Didn't anyone notice the Combine soldier talk in the hydra video? Just before he gets impaled, he says "Hold it there" quite clearly.

I heard it too. but still the AI is not very advanced...

do you agree?

What does that have to do with their voices?

no one knows how advanced the AI is, for all we know the ai in the e3 vid could have been adjusted to make gameplay easier.

ai is as advanced as it will get on any game for the time being. ai takes a lot of cpu and memory time and space when done in groups which is the hardest. I thought it was rather decent but those hydras and striders ai is really cool that some advanced stuff for games.

That's actually what we do know, Gabe said it so himself.

One thing I was wondering about is why the combine didn't follow him up the stairs? He blocked the door with the table and one combine started shooting through the window and Gordon went and hid behind the washer, then another combine kicks open the door, table flew across the room, Gordon runs up the stairs but the combine don't follow? They had plenty of time to catch up with him while he was dodging bullets coming in the window and pulling the radiator grill off the wall to throw at the combine at the top of the stairs by the soda machine.

when he is watching the combine in the trap place on the roof you can here them trying to get up the stairs.

the AI was adjusted for the e3 video... other than that...get back to the topic please :)

I don't think the combine is alien...mabe humans that have been tmade tests on or something like that(therefore the gas-masks)

I loved they way they talked.

Sometimes when you would throw a gernade at 'em they'd say "OH SH-T!"

And of course there's always "WE GOT HOSTILES!" And "WE GOT FREEMAN!"

I though the soldeirs were really rather funny. :cheese:

maybe they arent gas masks, maybe they help them breathe our air?

LMAO!! ROFL! LOL! and please stop spamming my thread. lets say on topic!

I also thought it was odd that they bleed red blood. hmm. Maybe is a cross breed between a Xen and a Human. Or the combine sucks in humans and transfers DNA into and creates the Combine soldiers. Like the caste system...I think?

That bit with the hydra, the combine jumps down using the wall to support his weight! seems pretty damned advanced to me kiddo!

Masks= hide faces + breathing

Combine= v. cool alien/human hybrids (combine= a combination no?), hopefully with squiggly tentacles or summat :borg:

Manhacks= Fzzzzzzzzzzzzzt

The police force IS the combine! They just come in two versions, one heavily armoured. Kind of like a SWAT team.

I don't know why people always get confused over this.

Gorgon man, you're just being offensive so shut up.

EDIT: -ah, thanks whoever edited him

I agree, Gorgon should definately be banned from these forums. I've seen enough of his double posting senseless bitching and slander in the past few days.

Anyway, I really like the way the way the Combine soldiers sound. Like someone mentioned, it's kind of alien-like. I don't see what any of this has to do with AI, though.

Well, you don't actually prove them wrong with your replys...Anyways, in HL1, did we hear the soldiers saying it or did we hear it over the radio? (HEV radio on their frequensy ur sumthin') I seem to remember hearing their voices long before I entered the room...

Who knows. Mayb they all just had a frog stuck in their throat.

I believe that the soldiers voices were heard over some sort of radio system, presumably the handheld sort of radios they carry that you can see on the Opposing Force loading screen. I'm pretty sure it was from the Grunts radios as the voices had varying volumes according to the distance of the grunt as far as I can remember. Thats what made it all the more cool when you were creeping through a warehouse and heard a 'Move..Out!' blast in your left ear.

I remember the first time i heard marine radio chatter in hl1...creeped the hell out of me. When i first got the game i had heard all about the advanced AI, so when i first heard

"I hear something" or "squad, quiet down" i'd just stop in my tracks and move slowly.

I learned to fear "fire in the hole -tink-"

The combine soldiers aside from having that little flat line noise and a more or less humanish voice, seem to sometimes have a staticy garble to their voices when they make their pain noise, like the guy who caught fire in tunnels and a few other occasions. This may be thanks to the gas mask but it could also be cause they might not be entirely human as previously suggested.

I'm willing to bet though that they are mostly human cause if you look at the black and white concept art for the combine soldier you can see very human tufts of hair poking out of the back of his mask.

Also i must say that the first combine dude in traptown did in fact teleport in. after the box gets manipulator chucked and the player and starts moving his screen towards the door on the left you see in the ditance a combine soldier pop into existance and fall down a foot before running towards the player.

i too found the voice of the recons over the radio funny :)

when i was messing around a few times.. it got quite hilareous with the grenades :)

heheheh too funny :)

so hopefully they continue with what they did in HL1 with HL2.. i wanna hear some panic-ed combines! muhahahah

he just keeps digging himself a deeper hole, its funny.

anyways When someone commented on why the combine did'nt run up the stairs I have somewhat of an arguement. its possible that once the combine know gordon is in the house (after he blocks the door) they radio eachother and set up a parimeter (at least this is what i concluded) you notice that as Gordon approches the window after climbing the stairs there is a combine right outside the window and he starts shooting almost instantly, like he knows your there.

however
1)the parimeter the gaurds set up could just be scripted there but its known so far that valve doesnt use scripted scenes often cause they like to show off their AI.

2)it might not be a parimeter at all, could be just coincidence that it looks that way.

3)could be the gaurd was just dropped there and reacted quickly. But i dont believe this to much cause he started shooting so suddenly like he was informed you were tehre...then again could be computer cheating. but i doubt the devs would sink that low :)

They could have also radioed the guy at top of the stairs, by the drinks machine, saying that Gordon was incoming - they thought he could handle Gordon, so didn't proceed to follow him.

But hey, the AI was off, so I don't know if that would be correct or not.

the AI was not off. the AI was only off at the barney video and the bugbait video

How do you know? I'd hope the AI was off for Traptown, becuase their reactions were very sluggish for the swinging beam.

the attacking was pretty good in the trapdown video, but the defending was poor. i think you are able to turn off and on diffrent features of the AI

edit.. whow.. cool, a bit more orange in the skin

I'd say that was right, yeah. The attacking AI triggered the guards to attempt to open the door Freeman had locked.. etc.
