Community Attitude..

mrchimp - People will make nasty posts, that's not our point. Flames will happen, that's not our point. People insulting each other will happen, but that's not our point.

Our point is attempting to squash out un-needed abuse towards new people within the community who make the common mistake of posting multiple threads or wrong information. This site relies on new people joining the community and the older members making them feel welcome. That is our goal and it can be achieved without the moderators turning into aptly named "forum nazi's".

U have to ban the ppl who make 'nasty' posts.

If you don't, they'll eventually drive all the 'decent' posters away - and u'll end up with a forum full of asses (seen it happen to alot of forums :/ )

We do, that's in the official forum rules located here which all of our members should of read.

This thread however is mainly about what I stated in my above post. The community attitude towards new members.

Was the antlion is a barnackle thread deleted? Cause I acnnot find it. I want to see it if it was so funny.

Dunno m8 but I very much doubt it would of been deleted it. I'll try and find it for you.

This forum has gone completely to shit, can't the mods control some of these bullshit delay threads?

There must be a mod out there somewhere!

Or just make me a mod, I'd clean this shit up in no time..

That's what they all say.

Behind the scene's work is being done. I've already come to a peaceful conclusion with Doom3>HL2 so the thread spamming is finally finished, a warning/banning forum hack is being researched and setup and plans are underway to install moderators for all the boards with none.

If you have any complaints about people then why not inform us? You can either do so via PM, IRC or using the "report" button located at the bottom of every post.

Don't just complain, help us do our job.

I've reported many Worldspawn posts... this kid needs to be stopped right now.

EDIT* btw D22 I have noticed you have been an excellent admin since I have been here... Maybe one of the only reasonable one, other then Mrbond.

I'd say Kudos on a job well done...not near so much delay junk as there had been...

I don't visit the boards, let alone the general forum enough to judge, but if it is still like it was when I left then this gets a thumbs up.

Didn't Munro enforce the same policy long ago? Like, before the delay thing happened.

I actually think the forums are civilized compared to most crap i read around the net.
Cant wait till the spoiler posts come out hehe

Look at all the positive energy in "Spitcodfrys trip to valve" -thread. Lets not let couple of rotten oranges spoil our community. Peace and love :)

Do you think the mods could delete the closed topic threads, they kind of clutter up the page..., there are 5 or 6 on the main page right now, and god knows how many there will be the closer we get the release date.

My attitude about this Valve or Nvidia better make playable on Nvidia cards or else valve will lose some serious money then bye bye company cuz there will only be a few that would be willing to go out and buy a new video card for a single game

ummm..."bye-bye company"? Dood....which one of those two companies are ya claimin's gonna go tits-up?? NVidia or Valve? rofl!

What WILL happen is HL2 WILL take every game of the year honor out there, ATI WILL sell a ton of vidcards....and maybe, just maybe, the game will be fun EVEN for GeForce owners. Heh, the 9800's gonna own it tho!!! :)

Sorry, I didn't know where to post this, but everyone seems to be getting really ratty over people discussing delays and that fateful day Sept 30th. I know this is annoying, but it is what alot of people are waiting for!!!

So instead of 100's of crappy threads talking of release why don't u have an official 'Release discussion' thread up at the top of the HL2 general discussion forum. Surely this isn't too much work, and it'll stop noobs getting flamed when they dont search the forum and ask what they think is a perfectly reasonable question...

Just my idea, not that stupid is it?

I believe if their were stricter mods, and more sticky's, then there would be alot less garbage threads posting delays, release dates, etc. etc.

I have at least one convert then, lol

Now all we need is a mod on our side :)

pHATE1982 - Your thread idea is interesting and I'll give it some serious thought but there's really nothing to discuss.

Gabe has only ever said that Valve is aiming for the Sept 30th release date. A bunch of people claiming to work for big game companies have claimed Vivendi has contacted them stating some time in November ( inc one trusted source ), Vivendi nor Valve are making public announcements or press releases, a bunch of evidence points to a delay and several people are getting seriously hot-headed due to a lack of new official information about the release date.

Whenever the release date comes up in a conversation a flame usually ensues. Everything there is to say has already been said, so creating a a thread dedicated to it is just going to fill up with random useless information.

HOWEVER, by giving the people a place to dicuss it we can remove all other threads, cleaning the forums up. So again, I'll give it some thought.

There's a thin line between cleaning the forums and becoming what is known as "a forum nazi". You have to have rules for a community but at the same time the community is the lifeline so you don't want to annoy them by being too strict.

As I've stated many times before - When you are running a community of this size where threads on certain boards can grow between 9-18 pages an hour then it's very hard to keep up - and moderators are only human.

We're doing our best, I personaly think there's been a big improvement over what it was.

You say flaming would still be a problem.... but surley one thread is a hell of alot easier to clean up than 20+ threads.

Plus if all the current information that people have, from magazines, other sites etc was all in one place there wouldn't be half the amount of stupid questions.... hence less flaming in total!

I'm glad u r considering it though! Thanks for your time!

There aren't though. All new delay threads created are deleted as soon as a moderator sees them.

LOL... I just noticed you've done one better and banned them all together! :)

Hell, better than nothing huh?

Not me, but I agree with the rule cause it is getting a bit too much.

Talking about Welcoming people to the board, do you not think that the instant ban for delay threads is a little harsh?

The sticky doesn't exactly catch your eye easily. I can imagine some new member signing up quickly thinking he has some new information but ends up being banned.

A message pointing them to the sticky and a locked thread is a more welcoming solution, in my opinion.

I think im going to have to agree with Feath on this one.....

But if you already have a currently registered member posting delay threads, give them 2 shots. 1st time is a warning, 2nd time is ban.

It says intentionally though, suggesting that the people who will get banned from it will have read the sticky, unlike new people (who should anyway, as it's protocol) who would do it without knowing.

It gets my vote, even if it's not the solution I was talking to D33 about.
I'm sick of getting excited about realease date info only to find out that amazon still has sept 30th up on their site *gasp* *shock*

Just try not to ban stupid headcrabs who are just peeing themselves with excitment because they want this game so bad, and just want the latest release info.

In that case maybe you should add to the sticky, commenting on the latest info in just a few lines i.e. sept 30th until we know different?
Otherwise headcrabs are gonna know they can't ask the question they wanna know the answer to, but there is still no info for them!

I can't wait for this whole Delay thing to be over. Things could easily be worse on these forums though. Flaming is minimal considering the number of members.

Another question for the mods.

Why can people talk about illicit activities (namely drug abuse) but I can't drop the f-bomb? Seems moderation priorities are a little out of whack. I would probably be banned if I talked in detail about game piracy, but if I made a tutorial about making Crystal Meth out of baking soda, no one would give a damn.

And only a few of those members post regularly...
