Ive just been thinking about something.

Theres a lot of comments about peoples countries, about how they suck.
Admittedly a lot of it isn't serious but i thought id just make a few threads about this whole thing. What I'm going to do is everyone few days or each week I'm going to make a thread basically asking peoples of a certain country, what it is like to live there. What things go on etc. Hopefully this will break down some of the stereotypes that have built up. Obviously someone from one part of the country might describe it different from another part, but its better than nothing.

Anyway.

First off.

I would like to know what it is like in Russia. What goes on? What is living there like in general?

And please please, if you aren't from Russia don't make stuff up.

(I chose Russia simply because its the first on that came to my mind. Probably because of the Aerospace thread)

Ive made it a sticky, but that might clutter the place up a bit, so depending on how well it goes that might change.

OK the worst stereotype is that it's always winter there (especially in all the movies). It's not. The climate is very similar to New York/London. At least in the more populated parts of the country.

Hmm there are a lot of problems with alcahol/drug abuse and crime. The economy is mediocre at best. But you can probably get better info on this from some website then me. I haven't been there since '94.

I think Russia is going to turn back to Communism someday.Because there people are mad by the fact when Russia turned into a demorcracy things got worse and the economy got screwed up.

Well, I lived near Moscow, so it wasn’t that bad. Plus I was 16 years old when I moved from there to USA, CA ( I am 20 right now), so I lived with parents and didn’t experienced any problems with money. What can I say, I guess people are not much different there. In school I went to, people didn’t really care how you dress up, there weren’t any different groups like here (Goths, etc.). Again, not in our school, I know there are Goths in Russia, but most of the time, they are much older and it is real life style, not rebellion against parents. But I tell you one thing, Western Culture played big role in my childhood. We all loved to listen to Prodigy, Offspring, Green Day and so on. Girls generally were crazy about Backstreet Boys. I remember watching Hollywood movies and loving them. Heh, I even remember playing Terminator outside when we were around 12. What else, oh yeah, we also had all these consoles, like Super Nintendo, Sega, original Nintendo.

But the best part was, in school you had different classes, but you went there with same people, so after years you become very close to them. They are your best friends, you find your first love there and so on. We had great bound with each other after going through 9 years of school together. I don’t feel like that about my friends here in America, they are just there, to spend time with.

So there, Russia for me is mix of USSR with Western Culture. We have different values, but at the end people are same. How do I know this? Because I didn’t have such hard time fitting in at USA.

MrWhite.....I agree, blair is way too into bush...and anyway, a goverment doesnt define the country...the culture and the real people who live there define it...the people who are poor, medium richness....i'm not being insulting to poor people, but they know what its really like to live in a certain counrty...not the guys in massive houses with everything they've ever wanted....poor people actually work for what they get...

Why is it that Europe/Russia/America uses same characters?I've seen Germans use the letters A, and Czech use Z and etc... Is it because these languages were based on Latin?

I wonder what it would be like if there was no more communist countries.I mean cuba is soon going to turn to a democracy because once Fiedla Castro dies were going to get a hold of the goverment.Also the only commie threat I see is China but all that has to happen is another rebellion by those college students again and there you go a civil war in china and then we can step in and help the the democratic guys.Also there is the rpoblem with North Korea....but I bet where going to go to war with them soon.And plz don't flame me for this.

If I went back to Russia I don't think I would fit in anymore. I mean a few weeks ago I met this girl who recently came from Russia and she was so different .. practically the only thing we had in common was the language.
