I believe I will be taking full advantage of this later. But first tell me why it's such an awesome game, because to be honest, other than hearing people blab about how good it is, I don't really know WHY.

Its cheap, might as well get it. I can't explain why but I really enjoy playing the game and you could read the reviews about the game or read the CoH thread that is around here somewhere.

Only $20? Whoa - looks like one of my friends is getting that for Christmas.

As for why it's a great game:
  • It's a real-time strategy where strategy actually plays a role. The learning curve is not the interface or gameplay - it's tactical.
  • The graphics are FPS quality in RTS scale. Cinematic large-scale warfare like you've never seen before. It's like playing Battlefield 1942 as an RTS, but with better graphics.
  • Ever-changing environment. Destructable terrain means that the battlefield shifts constantly. The map can be a huge crater by the end of the game, it if's really intense.
  • The two sides play very differently. Most players focus on either Axis or Allies because it's difficult to be good at both of them.
  • Each side has 3 seperate divisions, of which you choose one. This greatly affects your gameplay, particularly strengths and weaknesses.
  • Great community. Most of the time, the people you play are friendly, because people who aren't mature enough to put time into it are generally too bad to be a nuisance. There are exceptions, though.
  • We have an excellent cadre of players here on Halflife2.net that are almost always up for playing if they're free.
  • The best sound in any game ever.
  • It makes World War II feel fresh.

Get it!

The game has an AWESOME atmosphere, it really puts you in the action better than any other RTS I've ever played. So STFU&GTFO to buy it.

Everybody has forgot to mention it will take advantage of DX10 hardware in a form of a patch when Vista is released ;)

Yeah, it really is awsome. How the map can change is especially cool; I was playing, and there was this one chokepoint that we where fighting over. There was so much artillery... by the end, the ground there was black and so bumpy from all the craters. Infantry where taking cover in the craters, and I was sticking AT guns inside em to ambush enemy tanks... golden.

P.S. Strategy is long term for a broad area and group, tactics is short term for a smaller area and group.

sweet deal
one of the best games of 2006 so..
GET ON IT!

Cool, I just got it, and installed it, BUT, it won't let me connect to RO, it says that I've lost my connection everytime I try...

That's weird. Forward whatever ports on your router that are necessary, and check the RO server status, it's down for maintenance or patching every once in a while.

Well I played it with full settings on an HD projector at 140 inches, and while it wasn't a terrible game, it was just the same as any other RTS except with the same old WWII shit. Not even the magical projector and surround sound could make this game fun. It started off with us building shit for a while, and then my guys started dying because an enemy sniper set up right outside our base. While trying to find him, my guys got stuck in numerous places, or they'd lie down next to the crater I wanted them in. So all the same, nothing new. Starcraft is way more fun.

4/10

EDIT: and there's like 1 gunshot sound for each weapon, 2 or 3 explosions, and oh god, the worst part is the dialogue. The characters say the saaaaaame shit OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER. Way to really remind the player they're in a video game, developers. GJ.

Aside from the fact that I've never seen you rate anything as good rather than shitty, I'm going to go ahead and suggest that maybe the sniper was killing your men because you weren't doing the right job of rooting him out? Taking out a sniper is easy - rushing your soldiers so that they're right next to him and forcing him to decloak is one, getting your own sniper is another, and getting a jeep is even another. Especially if he's by your base - you could just send out some engineers to reveal him so that the MG nests could rip him to pieces.

Already checked the server status, and it should be fine. I'm guessing it's a firewall problem.

Anyway, problem #2 is that the right-click button on my mouse is broken, so I'm off to Best Buy yet AGAIN to get a new one. Let's play tonight, around 9-ish, maybe?

No can do, I've got work all day ('s where I am now) and I've got to do a lot of homework and assorted other stuff tonight (keep working on ennuified.com for one :D) so I won't have time.

I'll be at work tomorrow night too, but I should be good to play Tuesday, or some night over the Thanksgiving break.

In the meantime, play the tutorials, update your game client (COH is on patch 1.3 at the moment, logon to RO to do so) and get a bit of practice in.

Lamesauce.

Whatever, it's not like I'll stop playing COH anytime soon.

I love CoH to bits. And I'm not usually a fan of RTS.

Just played some of the tutorial (which was actually fun, I was pleasently shocked that they didn't have a Boot Camp theme for it), the Omaha Beach mission, and a match in Multiplayer. So far I really like this game.

If I liked Dawn of War a lot... but never play RTS games online.... Is it worth it?

Its alot like Dawn of War, and its incredibily fun, except requires a very decent computer to play at some nice looknig settings

Yep.

Not really, I'm running low-end dated hardware right now - 3200+ and 6600GT - and I still can run it on medium looking half decent.

Just checked bestbuy.com, the stores nearest to me sell it for 20$. It's amazing, Dark Messiah cost 40$ and it was only six hours of gameplay. I should've checked this thread first :/

I definitely would pick this up for $20.....this is one of my favorite games since half life 2.

Cool. I have a nice PC so thats not a problem. I played the multiplayer demo a couple times and it ran perfect on high settings. I didnt play a lot though since multi player rts isnt usually my thing. Although I must admit I did have a good time. Perhaps this will be the first RTS I play online?

Now I can get Company of Heroes... AWESOME!

20 bucks is a STEAL for such a fantastic game

.... gonna go play!!

****...

I went to Best Buy today and it was $49.99.
Gah, waited too long.

I picked up a copy of Tribes Vengeance instead, $10. :D

****

I was going to go today also. Damnit.

EDIT: I think im gunna get it anyways. I got 75 bucks left of birthday money... but Ill have to play online in order for me to feel like its worth it (50 bucks is a lot of money for me). Are there any guides or anything I should know of in order to not get raped in my first few games?

Hmm you should've double checked, when I went to Best Buy the price tag on all the CoH boxes were still $49.99. So I asked a guy to check the price for me, and when he did the machine told him $19.99. The cashier also couldn't believe it, he thought it was a mistake. So go back and double check, I really doubt it was a limited time thing.

But why would a newly released game by a semi-big developer be $20?
I'll wait for Christmas, so I'll have my new video card and memory to play it at it's fullest.
