Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Even if you don't get the expansion, try out all the new maps. People with vanilla CoH can't start a game with an OF map, but they can join 'em. Drekplaats is a very good 3v3, and the new 4v4 is a lot of fun too.

I have it, 'tis great fun.

I'm a bit let down by the Panzer Elite as they seem to be lacking somewhat in, well, panzers. Perhaps they should have been called the "half track & armored car elite". They're still pretty fun with some cool doctrines and whatnot. But only being able to get 2 actual tank types (Panzer IVF and panthers) and the rest of the heavy armor being tank destroyers really wasn't what I was expecting. Oh well, they're still fun and add a lot to the game and play very differently to all of the other factions.

The Brits are very much my favorate faction so far. having a squad tooled up with Bren guns (and the odd captured L-MG42) doing drivebys out the back of Bren gun carriers is quite amusing. They seem a well rounded faction but they do start off quite slowly and fairly weak as their basic squads are so expensive (which is understanderable when they can build slit trenches for free, along with the other defenses) but they really pick up in early mid to late game as they have some very powerful units/defenses like the 17 pounder AT gun, stuart (well, maybe not "powerful" as such but you can get it out very early and its special ability is awesome, if slightly disgusting), 25 pounder arty (particularly in combination with a captain), etc.

I'm particularly a fan of the British armor, they're probubly the best combined armor force in CoH. Everything has its role and fulfils it very well and the special abilities and natural stats of the tanks make them a good match for the individually better German tanks. When you have it working all together with the Churchills drawing fire, fireflys using their long range to "snipe" at the enemy armor and the cromwells and Stuarts using their high speed to flank the enemy you get a much greater feeling of a combined armored force than with the other factions, imo.

I'm still not sure the eastern front would work that well with CoH unless it was in a very specific high terrain density area, as CoH doesn't do open terrain enguagements very well. It works in the bocage and towns of Normandy and the built up areas of Holland, but when the fighting gets out into the open it gets silly. Due to the limited sight range of units tank squadrons can drive right past each other despite not having anything in between them, which is silly and really wouldn't do the wide, flat open terrain of the eastern front justice.

One big complaint : you have to sign in online everytime you want to play? I mean WTF.

Awesome expansion though, great to be playing CoH again.

I guess. Battle of Stalingrad would be awesome though.

sooooooo
i was thinking that it's probably about time i picked this up... considering the countless hours i've spent playing vanilla COH

is there any reason why i shouldnt? i mean i'm sure most stability and balance issues have been resolved by now, right?!

There's some retarded issused about having to log in online every time you want to play (even offline) that have put me off getting it. (I'm on dial-up, you see)
