Ok guys, so the reason behind this thread is to tell all the newbs out there where they're putting their heads to and to all those that spend time with they're computer: why not do something important with your lives!? I must say first that I have played games and done many stuff with my computers (programming, art etc..) for a good 10 years now. Some of it is important. Yes sure that time has been really giving and fun and all, but one should always remember that there's a life outside the computer too. Computers may cause you harm and eventually will if you don't focus on doing other things as well.

Things I've come up with for spending too much time on my comp are:

-GF's leaving me (Face it: Girls are not fond with computers)
-Almost losing my job several times cause a lack of sleep
-Need for glasses
-BAD Nightmares (Lucid dreaming these is a bad thing)
-Symptoms related to my nerve system (shaking etc..)

So live your life outside your computer as well.

-Go out and do some things
-Get a sportty hobby if you don't have it already
-Meet people outside the web also
-Meet the girls
-Think
-Read books
-Live your life

pssst.. Let's hope that HL2 comes out soon

;)

-GF's leaving me (Face it: Girls are not fond with computers)

There are actually women out there who love computers as much as we do... i'm friends with lots of em... wanna marry a gaming girl some day. A girl who can kick my ass at the latest games <nods>

dude, if you're gonna tell us to go live our lives at least give a guide on how to do such.

I am as socially inept as they come, but my agenda is slightly different than most people's. a lot of stuff out there really makes me kind of... eh. hard to explain.

comradebadger understands me? :D

anyhow, yeah. I'll go back to killing myself every day.

I am joining the marines after high school... is that good enough?

but oh so wrong badgy, oh so wrong :(

so, anyone want to write a guide to socialism? I mean socialization ;P

Yes, I mean..umm I don't like many of the things out there, the world is an evil place for us. But only one advice applies to you all: Frankly, LIVE YOUR LIVES. And by my referring to my ex girlfriends I meant that spending 24/7 hours with my comp doesn't build a relationship eh. Don't get me wrong, I love my computer and that's the problem.

Real Life isn't as hard as many of you think
Plus...the Physics are AWESOME!

Well it hasn't ruined your life or mine, or anyone I know. And what's your point? go "live your lives"... thank you, we've all waited for you to come along and tell us just that, sheesh.

I think he means girls that haven't been beaten with the ugly stick.

Mmmm, but the graphics are a bit bland.
Oh Christ, I'm pathetic :hmph:
But apart from making that dreadful joke (and despite my large post-count), I am a very sociable, very nice person really. And I do my best to live my life.

What you consider to be "living your life" is intensely subjective. For example Rock Stars, get pissed every night, sleep with loads of women, and the rest. What happens? They end up depressed with their lives by the time they're 30 or 40 and commit suicide, or end up as alcoholics or drug addicts, unable to do much of anything any more, they spend months on tour aware from friends and family.

Ask most veteran Rock Stars and they'll tell you, that kind of life isn't as enjoyable as it looks.

Sportsmen ... they spend hour after hour practicing their sport, they can't drink, haven't particularly got a lot of time to work of relationships.

Personally I think you should stop telling people how to live their lives, if they enjoy it, let them do it.

For example I don't really enjoy going out and getting hammered every night, or every Friday night. I respect that someone may enjoy that, and I let them get on with it. I also don't like being in rooms with a lot of people, I feel crowded and awkward; some people may enjoy socializing in that manner, so I let them get on with it. I hate clubs, and dancing like a freaking idiot, but some people enjoy doing that so I let them get on with it.

I enjoy my computer, it makes me happy, so I would ask that they let me get on with that.

I've had my experiences with things you have mentioned and none of my experiences have been particularly enjoyable.

I enjoy going out with my friends, yes, and I do that now and again, because I enjoy it.

I don't need the rest.

I stay inside and am a cronic jacker.

But actually I'm the same on here that I am with my friends, and so far I haven't pissed any of them off too bad, so I guess it works.

And, computer MAY ruin my life? Why couldn't you tell me back in the 386 days when I coulda actually done something with my life instead of wasting 12 years infront of a screen.

What I've gotten outa comps
-Brutally honest
-A colorful vocabulary
-kink in my right hand
-A love for photoshop

well some people actually live their lives in front of a machine for a reason. because it's their source of income, pleasure, relaxation and relationships. spending time at your machine doesn't always have to be wasteful. if you spend all day on your backside just browsing the net, then sure, you're a bloody great big waste of space. but if you're learning, improving and maybe working on something, then carry on i say.

my sister told me this analogy and i think it fits in here:

life is like a fruit machine.
-some people try to play the fruit machine and see what they get.
-others use magnets and fake coins to try and win
-others step back and refuse to take part
-others ask 'why is there a slot machine?' and try to invent something in the fruit machine's place.

forgive me if that was a little confusing but i'm doing it from memory. it all depends on which section you fit into. some of you sound like the "take a step back and refuse to take part" sort of person.

Hey ahh...scoped? umm....ive been with my girl for a year and a half now, and she knows im a complete computer freak.she thinks its adorable, and calls me her "techy." and though u may or may not believe this she is an incredibly hot girl, and most of my friends hate me because i got her. its ur personality outside of the comp that matters. when i get off the comp to go meet up with friends or socialize, i sex myself up, like any man would. if you have had all those problems because of the computer, you might want to see a doctor, because theres something seriously wrong with u then.

I love videogames but I hav friends
well I dont know if they are friends but they are nice whit me

but I will try to get a better life

It's this freaking bad english I've learned, so I'm not too good at it, but I try to make my point in here.

I'm a social people occasionally when I want and computers doesn't necessarily ruin it (I have found friends from the net also). But I just mean to warn people like myself who find their self spending too much time with their computer. It's bad for your health. I go jogging, meet my friends and have girlfriends. I just met up with this one that calls me me the same I think: "techy" and she founds it sexy that I'm good with computers and that I'm someday going to make my living out of it.
My end point (wtf?) would be that just don't overdo it. Whatever you do, do it unless you run into problems, and when you do you know that it's time to slow down but not quit. It's them that stay on the ground, not those who stand up from it that will be in shit.

Yes, Cheers my colleges

yeah, all of us should get a better life... we owe it to ourselves...

to all of you who are young and antisocial just get the hell out and live, what's the worse that can happen?

Well, one day our video game expertise will save the whole world...Maybe if there is ever a resonance cascade the HL nerds will live to fight another day!

Or maybe they will make a crappy MTV show outa it to mock us.

And after the invention of the web, lots and lots of quality time with your right hand.

scoped you seem to be the one with the biggest no life on here

i mean u start shaking cos ur on the computer too long??? LOL

dont tell everyone else to get a life, i think you need to get a life, as for me I go out to clubs and pubs at least twice a week and have a good social life, the computer is just for when im at home, the majority of the time im not at home day or night

Like I said Evil^Milk, what you consider to be a better life is subjective.

No offense but, I'd wish you get the hell out and stop posting on these forums.

Great, another thread where everyone can tell people to go get a life, and say how much of a "life" they already have. ****ing ridiculous...

pingu stfu m8. he has a point that my parents put across to me all the time. because of my computer, one of my options is re taking yr12 as i MAY do badly. my results in mid august will change my life forever. if i do bad: my computer gets thrown out the window by me. if i do well: i still say stuff the computer and try to make the best out of my life by going to uni.

to all the youngsters out there in yr11 and below: trust me, ditch the computer (or cut down to the evenings anyway) and do some work. and dont kid yourself or say 'o wtf does he know, stfu u dick', ull wanna kill yourself in the future if you dont. what do you want out of life? where do you wanna go? marriage? kids? living abroad? high pay? if you wanna be succesful, uve heard it before, 'youve got to work'.

u only get one shot guys, dont let it slip...ull regret it if you do. take me for eg. im the only one in my ENTIRE family (so far) to be doing well, and im not even doing that well anyway (omfg my family are dumbasses lol).

dont let it happen to you. whats work untill your 20 or so and having a good future and life, compared to wasting it away on the virtual world, and getting nothing in the future (unless your extremely lucky).

its only for a few years guys...dont waste it. live your life.
(lecture over ;))

actually i feel the same way you do; i've gone out and tried this and that, but i haven't found anything that really makes me want to act like the rest of the people i've seen. true, i might not talk much while i'm with my friends, i enjoy going out and having fun, things are just different for each person and i respect that.

sorry, i didn't mean to insult or offend you, but i was only speaking to those who might've felt the same way i did. sometimes i feel like i have to do something else, to go beyond this forum... sometimes i'm a bit desperate :)

like Mr. Redundant said, "in life, balance is a key."

if you're happy with your life in whatever condition it may be, that's just excellent and i'll be happy for you :)

Aparantly youve never heard of the games industry. Its the one where 99% of the people who get hired spend their spare time working on their computers :D

Guys how about you learn how to manage your time, like 8-10pm is computer time. The other time you could spend reading a book or something.

This is what i usually do over the summer to avoid staying on the computer 24/7

Find a hobby: I play guitar and Im in a band we usually practice 4 times a month or more or less.
Another hobby: I goto the libary check out some books and read them non stop or until my eyes hurt or headache.

Before the summer begins create a plan, like I usally have things I want to learn how to use more efficiently or history subjects I need to brush up on. This summer I educated my self more on the subject of geometry and algebra 2, and I learned how to use PS7, and Flash better. Another thing you could do instead of supposedly waisting time on the computer is do some community service. :)

bleh contrary to what most people think, a well balanced life doesnt equall a good life. some people like it, others dont.

its useless to tell people how to live because theyll just ignore you anyway. its their life why should they care how you think they should live it. :p

Yeah well your kind of right scoped but it doesnt work with everyone. Not everyone has the opportunity, the confidence or the time to go out and do stuff.

..or even going to a part time job more often like me. i go 4-5 times a week, giving me around £420 a month...i mean cmon for 4 days work thats pretty good for me anyway. thats around 550-600 at the end of the hdays...mmmm sweet money. the other days i just do c/wk, clean the cars, read a book, go out with friends every night etc etc.

sitting at the comp 24/7 sux ass as you loose friends due to them never seeing you. i force myself to only go on the comp from around 6pm to 9pm or so, and sometimes less.

it is a habit, and any habit is hard to break quickly. just try it for a while, and u may be surprised. ive been doing much better at school by cutting down on comp time, even if my exams are finished...gulp.

Yeah, that's what I do also pingu. I should have added that there's no need for flaming also :frown: I don't have too many problems with my comp yet but I'm trying to prevent myself from getting double sided eye glasses and such in the future..
And to be honest maybe I'm desperatly just trying something here, may be that I never succeed.

scoped just ignore pingu lol. different people get affected by things in different ways. uve been on a comp longer than him so u speak from experience, as do i. i got my first comp at 9 i think (a 486 rofl), and have been getting new ones for the past 8 years.

i completely agree with you tho tbh.

I have a lot of friends. I have another hobby outside of playing games that I won't mention because you all know what it is and I know that it makes you guys mad when I mention it. So I'll leave now. :E

Computer is damn well helping my life ;) I do web design so I need it.

I spend almost every waking minute in front of a computer. If I'm not on them, I'm reading about them. It's what I do; I'm very happy with it. I could never understand how getting drunk, or going out to clubs, or bars, or school dances, movies, whatever, could be thought of as fun. I've always considered it to be just the opposite actually, and so I do not participate in ANY of it. The people I see from day to day, the ones participating in all these things, seem to be the ones wasting their lives and doing damage to their body and mind. Computers have enriched my life, and have not harmed me in any way.
