A few months back i got a virus in my computer which totally messed up everything, and the only way to get it back working was to install a clean version of windows. After that everything has felt kind of slow, especially games.. For example half-life2 used to run real smooth with my computer, but now the lag is horrible and the freeway level is totally unplayable due to the horrible framerate. I have new video and audio drivers, directx 9c and ive scanned my computer for spyware and viruses. Everything seems to be fine, but apparently something is wrong.. I want my fps back :x hope you guys can help me to get an idea what would help. There should be a dxdiag report attached.

I seem to find that too.

Did you format your hard drive, or simply reinstall Windows over your old install?

What is the difference? I remember a gateway I had had a system recovery thing, i would hit that, did it 3 times to do a "destructive" thing and it would delete all crap and reinstall factory shipped things, would that be considered clean or a reinstall of windows over windows?

By 3 times, I meant I used it 3 times in the period I had it, this was the last PC I had that I bought off shelves, then I made my own, then upgraded it to in sig.

I didnt format, but since reinstalling windows didnt work I just installed it in a new folder and deleted the old windows afterwards. Im thinking of formating in case nothing else seems to work out.. but that takes so much time :|

Doing that wont help really. Just makes things worse. If you ever uninstall anything always go through the proper procedure to remove it, don't just delete its folder, just causes more problems then not :)

Try a format with a clean install of windows. Start a clean slate.

a full format of the PC would be better, not a system recovery method. Have you updated ur motherboard drivers, sound drivers? Do u have other programs running in the background?

If you decide to reformat, create a seperate partition for Windows only.

This way, if you ever need to reinstall Windows, and probably reformat, you only need to format the Windows partition, better chance of keeping your valuable data.

Use a Windows 98 boot disk to reformat or an Windows XP CD which does it automatically for you....For the Windows 98 boot disk at the A: prompt type fdisk. However this will only reformat in a FAT32 system, and later on you would have to make it NTFS inside of XP.

I would install the new Windows directory to C: Windows2 not C: Windows.

It sounds to me like your registry is full of crap, try typing regedit into the start > run box and search for the name of the virus. Edit>Find (Ctrl+F)

For some reason, that doesn't work unless you rename your current Windows directory to something else, and re-install to a new Windows\ folder. Windows installer just doesn't like it.

well, i formatted my computer and while everything got a bit faster the actual problem with games didnt get fixed... im almost certain the problem is with radeons driver installation. when i start to install the catalyst drivers everything starts out fine, but when the computer tells me to restart and ive done that, in windows some window quickly flashes and goes away. (normal?)
after that everything is really slow for a few minutes and then the screen goes black for a sec and everything is fine. except for that games are still slow and for some reason i cant run ati catalyst control panel. well, i can but i have to double click the icon several times before it opens. is this normal? anyone know what could help?

try *Just* installing the driver.. no control panel etc...

that might help

tried that.. but windows was slow and sluggish without the control panel so i had to reinstall it

My computer seems to have suffered this fate in a different situation.

My fps on my 9600xt was around 100 at the time I bought the game (January)

Now my fps is around 40, yet I haven't installed any new games or programs which take up a large amount of space :(

I believe Valve are trying to bugger us

Yay broken record time:

Did you install all the drivers right (motherboard, videocard, soundcard)?

Remember to install service pack 2 (unless the windows disk has it), then your motherboard drivers then everything else (videocard/soundcard etc) to avoid problems and get maximum performance.

they should be installed correctly.. though the motherboard driver is from the cd that came with it. video and soundcard drivers are the latest from the internet

Ok. Have you checked all the ATI control panel options to make sure nothing is being forced on? Especially AA or AF.

How about turning off HDR (even though it is not in HL2).

Also have you gone to windows update and gotten all the latest files? It should show if anything is missing too.

Also did you download HL2 off steam or install it? Make sure it is at 100% updated (it lets you play with less then 100%) before playing.

Have you made sure VSYNC is off in the ATI control center and in game?

Strange problem though.

im using the regular ati control panel which to my knowledge cant force those things.. and yes i have updated windows, even the optional choices aswell. i downloaded hl2 overnight through steam. vsync is off.
its a strange problem indeed and not just with half-life2.. so far ive tried far-cry and morrowind which both used to run very smooth with high settings.. not anymore. its annoying that i cant seem to find out what the real problem behind this is
