Ok, I decided I wanted to play some counter-strike, so I load it up and my computer reboots at the start-up screen so I think "alright, I just overclocked abit too much" so I reduce my OC and it still happens!
By now i'm mad, I say "let's see if HL2 does it" and it does! So I load up UT2k4 and absolutely no problems! I touched my CPU (my processor, not the case) to see if it was hot and it wasn't. So what's the problem?

Does it crash with very specific intervals (e.g. almost exactly after 30 minutes or the like)

EDIT : Some people are saying that after the update of tonight, CS:S sometimes indeed tends to crash. It's probably a small bug, don't worry. It'll probably be fixed in the next update.

It started doing this right after I updated steam. Well it reboots at the part where the background image is blurred and it says "loading..." basically the second I start it up. It's quite annoying. It does this with HL2 also, like I said in my first post.

Well, I just heard HDR is being implemented, (there's an option already) , and to quote Iced_Eagle :

But hey, these are the growing pains that must be done when VALVe is implementing new graphical features :)

So basically this is normal? Like, alot of people get this problem with the new steam update? I just got bought HL2 and CS:Source yesterday. Oh well, it puts me at ease to know that it isn't me.

I read some nvidia cards have the reboot problem you're talking about. I just crash to the desktop myself. (all this since the update about an hour ago)

They'll fix this quickly, I'm sure.

nvidia cards? Hmmm...I have a eVGA GeForce 6600GT AGP card. I sure hope they realease a fix soon, it's kinda depressing when you get a new game and you can't play it just yet. Also, it seems that ever since the new update steam has been running with 100% CPU usage.

Updating what? It's already done updating when it's updating you can hover your mouse over steam and it says Steam - working. So it's not updating, I had to kill it to get my computer responding.

I get this exact problem. Game starts, the Valve intro starts with the image of the head, then says loading with a blurred image in background. I'd say after 5 seconds on this screen "click" and the PC reboots.

Running :-
AMD64 3500 Athlon
2 * 512 Dual channel Gail PC3200
GeForce6 6200 (Probably the clincher)

Now I've tried running with only 1 RAM chip in and it makes no difference. Still reboots at exactly the same point.

Its getting really annoying and I can't figure out where to go next. I might rip the old video card out of my old Dell and see if that fixes the issue.

In fact.... BRB....

I fixed it! I installed the new 78.05 nvidia drivers and it fixed it. The only thing is that HL2 goes down to 2FPS after the GMAN's little talk in the very begginning. I have a 6600GT so why does it do this? All the lag problems i've seen are by people who have 5xxx series cards. CSS works 100% perfectly now though.

Right installed my yonks old GeForce MX440 and it works perfectly. Put back in the GeForce6 card and crashes as before.
Now I'm using drivers 78.01. But I only downloaded these today !
Infact I'll go and have another look at their website....

Yeah, there are new drivers out. (78.05)

Really ? I couldn't find them from using the Driver selector utility... Graphics drivers > GeForce & TNT2 > XP gives me 78.01

>> Now found. Beta drivers.

Nope didn't fix my reboot with the GeF6 6200. Exactly the same, however with the ancient MX440 its fine :(

So much for my 256Mb Graphics card....

Just wait until valve fixes it. Then you'll be killing stuff again. :)

I had raised this with Valve on their support site the other day. They responded last night stating that they had made some changes and I should try again. So uninstalled and re-installed completely. The system made its various updates to the game and Valve. Still crashes ~ grrrrrr

Raised the fault with them again.
