The original is a great film. Good script by Milius and Stone ('What is Steel compared to the hand that wields it' etc etc ), classic soundtrack and some pretty good action scenes and special effects considering when it was made (before CGI). The shame was the producers opting to play it for laughs with the sequel and effectively killed it off as a franchise.

As a an adaptation of the Conan stories I guess it pisses off a lot of hardcore Conan fans (since the character Conan is dipicted quite differently in the movie than he is in the stories) but as a stand-alone fantasy epic it's great.

it butchered the stories it was based on, completely wiping his beginnings in favour of some silly plot about the mystery of steel. Ah-nold was/is a terrible actor, the supporting cast was terrible (except J Earl Jones, but it's J Earl Jones soooo) and the story was silly at times

that said; it's a classic for everything I just mentioned plus it has an awesome soundtrack and some thrilling battles
