I have Half-Life 2 and im trying to open up and play Half-Life 2 Deathmatch so when the server list comes up i click on a server to join. After i do this and it begins to load it stops and doesnt go anywhere. Then if i hit cancel and clik on the server refresh button it will refresh it but then it says not responding next to all of the servers therefore not letting me load them. Every once in a while though it will let me into a server and spawn me but as soon as i click ok on the message that pops up i cant do anything accept look around i cant move or change weapons. Everything is frozen and doesnt move. Then after about 10 - 20 seconds in the top right corner it will say connection failure and take me out of ther server. When i hit refresh again the same thing happens as the other times. If anyone could help me with this I would love it thanks cause i really want to play :x.

What is the latency of the server you are trying to join?

Uhhhhh, maybe thats the problem :l

how would that be the problem isnt that good?

Lower is better. latency is how long in Milliseconds (I think) it takes data to go from the server to your computer.

A good latency (Or "ping" as it is on the scoreboard) is between 200 and zero.

right i fixed it thanks i just had to uninstall Half Life 2 Lost Coast and it all got fixed

NO..

BEST POST EVER!!!

the secret link between failed latencies and lost coast has been discovered! lol, i think he uninstalled lost coast and joined a 200 ping or less server (wtf joining 2000ping wtflolgoodlordholy), thus unintentionally creating a rather foolish link between them.

Ok now im having a problem with my latency.. how do i get it lower all of the servers that have people in it have high ones. Then if i click on a low latency server and click connect to view the server info sometimes the latency goes from like 75 to 1075

The server is either down or changing map, usually thats what happens. The servers with high pings will constantly have that amount, it will never go down, ever...

Just search for servers >250 latency. If no ones there, play another game or pace around your room, up to you.

Are you behind a shared connection ? If so, it seems someone seems to be torrenting or whatever. If not, what connection speed do you have ?

yes, when a server changes map or when a new person joins, there is always a jump in latency..

yeah, you can pace around your room..

Ah I just got back from not having/using internet for 3 days, and this thread fills me with joy.

Soapy, what is your connection speed?

i believe my connection speed is like 235kbm but i dont know i just know its fast, i guess its just the servers thanks for ur helps

Ok. I used to play on a 300kb/s DSL and it was impossible to play while downloading or uploading anything. Anything under 300 is going to make it hard to find and maintain a good connection to servers. Lucky for you I think you are not in Alaska like me so it may not matter quite so much.
If you haven't already, go into Steam > View > Settings > Downloads, and choose the setting most cloesly resembling your speed. Probably 256k.
While refreshing the server list when you want to play, use the filter to only show servers with a latency of < 250. Click the word "latency" in the list to arrange them best to worst, and pick your games from there. It's a good idea to add the servers with the best conenctions to your favorites list.

One more thing, anything under 512kb/s is not fast for gaming. When you download, what is the average rate of transfer you get? I can probably guess your speed from that number.

im sure i guessed my internet speed wrong, let me check and see if i can figure it out, i know its fast.... ahhh my internet speed is 2m the dsl/cable choice in settings
