Admin: Maybe put this as sticky?

Hi.

I had a lot of problems getting started when I wanted to play deathmatches against friends on maps we ourselves wanted to choose. I got a lot of help here but it seems to be a common problem, some tricky parts if you as me only use puters and don´t manipulate them. ;)

Start: Hl Deathmatch
Choose: Create Server
game starts
When in game bring up the console
(that is preset to ~ on american keyboards if u run another key board either set the keyboard setup to US or open the config.cfg in Hl Deathmatch folder with notepad and change the line bind "~" toggleconsole to bind "F12" toggleconsole and save. If u don´t find it just use the search tool in windows. If it still does not work you go to Options-Keyboard-Advanced and check the box: Enable Developer Console)
Ok, back into the game.
Open the console
enter the commands:
sv_lan 0
sv_region 0
Hostname YOURCHOICE
Password YOURCHOICE
then you need to reload the map
Enter:
map MAPNAME (the maps to choose from will show in a scrollmenu)

Now you are started. You give your IP number and password to your friends and they start Hl Deathmatch and directly from the main menu open the console (so you might have to tell them too how to do that) and simply type:
connect IPNUMBER

When you want to change level it is back to the console and type:
changelevel MAPNAME (scrollmenu with your maps will show)

Happy gaming

Daniel

No offense, but that's rather stupid.

You could just hit "Create Server", then tweak console specific settings when the listen server is done setting up.

And please, change the title. Allot of people are going to come in here thinking you've managed to connect to the friends network.

there is a dark corner in hell reserved for those rehabs who make misleading thread titles.

you're also wasting alot of time, like, binding a key for the console.

Yes, as of now I'm sorely dissapointed.

eh come on you can't be serious
if you want to play with friends you get xfire and all join the same server

Kind of pretentious to want it stickied when it's something that everyone knows how to do anyway, isn't it?

Ok, sorry... This was the info I got from someone here when asking how to do it. And a "Friends Network" I never heard of...

I am sorry if there is a minimum knowledge base u gotta have to post here, I kinda came here just because I didn´t know these things.

Anyway, my friends cant connect to me after all.
When they type connect IP they still don´t find me and that really sucks because we have some maps we used to play in LANs a few years back that we have collected and now wana play over the net as we live in different cities now. That was the reason we bought the game but that starts to seem like a bad decission as that is exzctly what we can not do...

The edit button in my first post is not present anymore so I can´t change subject and binding F12 to toggleconsole is a fix directly from the manufacturers official homepage as ~ does not exist as a button on some european keyboards. Maybe wrong way to go but again I just listen to others in these matters, sorry.

Well they don´t, I have been in contact with 10s of people during the last week with the same problem and both in this forum and a few others there are plenty of posts from people wondering a lot of them have given up on the matter as I am about to do, damn pity and money wasted.

you're problem is you arent setting up the server right in some way
maybe you have firewalls on etc

you have to be more meticulous when you do these things and not come here bitching about it
it's laughable that '10s of peeps on this forum' cannot set up a server when its almost completely done for you nowadays by the software - jeez remember the days of adding upload and download and every damn other variable parameters:)
i'm jking but it is very easy these days to do it

but if you need help you ask nicely and we will help

Welcome to the forums, Ypvs. I think your motives are honest, but you've manages to stir up the natives. If I knew how, I'd help, but since everyone already knows, somebody will surely answer your question shortly.

I have done everything there.

I have no firewalls installed, and I have disabled the Windows firewall.

I tried a few different IP adresses one from ipconfig in Command Prompt then I sent him some others from the console. One of them came up with this error message:

Bad connectionless packet ( CL 'q') from [IP address].

Please help me as I have never been able to host a server and have been dying to ever since I bought the game which was when it came out. Thanks

Are you behind a router? If so, you will need to forward the ports for the server.

I am not behind a router and have tried without the firewall. I actually have put in a few hours a day on this for a week and tried everything I can think up and everything that others have suggested.
People can not connect to me.

As far as I can see the server is up and running but just not possible to connect to.

Edit:
I am behind an ADSL firewall router, sorry. Just talked to my bro whos house I am in for the time being and there are one here.
So, that might then be the problem for me? How in that case do I get around that?

Quite.

As I was saying, the Titanic is unsinkable!

On the plus side, I remember a couple of weeks back Valve announcing that they will be addressing the Friends system, so it shouldnt be too long before we get it working ;)
