Conspiracy theory thread.. HL2 is delayed because..

....of nVidia, i'm sure of it. nVidia bucks are depriving the community of Half Life 2 goodness. Desperate to "optimise" their cards, nVidia have "requested" Half-Life 2 to be delayed.

You know it sounds like something nVidia would do. :borg:

Could be.

I think we can attribute NVIDIA's poor showing to it's recent resting, laurel-wise.:E

Seeya.

Why does everyone always think its Nvidia that is behind everything?
Why cant it be ATI!? They surely want to show off Loki at around 200fps in HL2...

But noooo... it have to be Nvidia...

<Edges into the middle of the argument>

Could be. Could be either. Although I would have thought that ATI would want them to release HL2 earlier. Now, "proper" versions of those "optimised" Det50 drivers will be out before HL2. ATI can't pip NVIDIA at the post any more.:)

Pers'nally, I think it's just the great big marketing megamachine gearing up for what may be announced as the "HL2 Anniversary Release":cheese:

Just my 1.5 cents.:E

Then they just go "ATI - The Way Its REALLY Meant To Be Played". Maybe ATI WANT to delay it so that geforce users will have Rel50 and see the beauty of skipped lighting and shadows and blurry textures, then they buy ATI :p

Possible, after all money makes the world go round, and i'm sure VALVe could've benefited from the extra time, even if the game was already done for 30th Sept. You can't do enough testing, right?

Heh. Drivers notwithstanding, I reckon that a Geforce FX'll probably blow chunks in fear when asked to render something as cool as HL2.:E

Saying nVidia is behind the delay makes as much sense as saying that there's a delay because Valve's HQ got nuked. Sheesh...

I actually think its Nvidia too. I dont think that its really because NVidea "asked" it to be delayed, i just think that the tests that showed how poorly Nvidia cards were w/ HL2 took Valve by surprise, and are now trying to make it more playable for people who have Nvidia cards. I actually dont see any reason for it to be because of ATI cards...they did fine.

Maybe Valve forgot to set the Is_Running_Nvidia variabel to true, and now HL2 runs at 400 fps on the 5900 Ultra at max DX9 settings and 1600x1200/8xAA/8xAF. So they cant release HL2 because of the benchmark figures they released earlier :p

Half-Life2 is delayed because it isn't done...how simple is that?

half life 2 is delayed because you think its delayed....me on the other hand ... i dont think its delayed
SO IT ISNT!!!!!!!!!

/agree

Ever since the delay was 'officialy' anounced I've believed that it was NVIDIA moaning that caused it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.

it wasnt delayed

Don't you think that Valve also have a vested interest in ensuring that their game plays well on nVidia cards?

Just like DNF is right on schedule(sp)

HL2 does run on nVidia cards, well too i beleive, just not attractive. I think nVidia marketing saw the imminent release of the game as a threat to nVidias future market share, perhaps they are working on a nVidia card/HL2 bundle? Nothing advertises the power/capability of a graphics card like the "latest" game and HL2 makes nVidias best cards look poor in comparison to ATi cards.

I'm sure they do. But that doesn't excuse them from basicaly LYING to us about the delay. I wouldn't mind if they just came out and told us the REAL reason for the delay. Maybe they do have some regional stuff to do, but I'm betting that NVIDIA's b!tching is the main culprit. Mind you, half of my bitterness is becuase I dumped my GeForce 3 for a Hercules Prophet 9800 Pro just over a month ago, simply for HL2 and future releases. Bah :dozey:

Here we go with my theory (I think).
There are only two possibilities here.
1. Valve knew the game wasn't going to be released. They more than likely knew this at least a month ago (maybe longer). Now, this defines several items.
a. The game at this point in time isn't finished and it never was going to make the 30 Sep. release date (as was announced).
b. This would have been used as a marketing ploy to spur up some hype by the fans. Just look at all we have done.
c. The special guest on the IGN boards (who has worked with Valve) says he was instructed by Valve (or VU) to push for a 30 Sep. release. What makes this odd is that even he was shocked by the delay announcement 1 week before 30 Sep. which proves they either new about or it or something big came up that not even Valve expected.

2. The other possibility, as hinted at in 1c is that something big came up that messed with Valve's plans.. something REALLY BIG and important..

I mean, even a month before your game is supposed to be released you should be able to tell that your not going to make it on time. That's where I come up with the two possible ideas. Valve knew and continued to lie/push for 30 September or something big came up.

Now, if it were theory 2 then what could have happened that would have messed up the 30 September release? I theorize:
1. Valve's content providers for a HL2 release via Steam backed out.. Valve wants both to happen at the same time (a Steam release means more money for Valve). These content providers would've provided major bandwidth for Valve so less problems would occur when lots of people attempt to download it online.
2. Issues with Nvidia/ATI have caused problems with Valve releasing HL2 satisfied.. either of these companies probably didn't attempt to pay off Valve so their lacking hardware gets more attention before release.. Valve could've done this their selves so that all customers using HL2 would be satisfied. Working with Nvidia a few more weeks would not only allow Valve and Nvidia to work out driver and hardware issues (compared to ATI) but also allows some of the crew to take out even a few more bugs.

Well, I think that's all.. :p

STEAM - Not ready to handle massive content delivery, which ties into Nvidia who also back steam with bandwith.
ATI - New card released with HL2 bundled, so it'd be wise to make HL2 come out when the cards out to.
NVIDIA - Valve are old friends and have many ties with them, especially steam.

THE SAN IS AGAINST US!

LOL!

i still think its not done and the steam bandwith to

The scary thing is between all of us we may be right. And of course all the leaked source code that allegledy contains very sensitive steam related stuff. :(

man they just delayed it so they could get the christmas rush fools

As Gabe said, they spent spent all the money they made off HL1 and some money they had laying around.

Unfortunately, that was the money they had stowed away to buy the CD-r for the gold disc.

Actually, Its all been delayed because in november it will be five years since half-life 1. Style.
