I will be able to play half life 2 for a few minutes and then all of the sudden the game will freeze, the sound will loop over and over for about a minute, and then the screen will go black. Why is this? Counterstrike works fine. I have also gone through all of Far Cry with no problems. My system is:

2.8ghz pent 4
512 ram
128 mb ati mobility radeon 9600

I REALLY want to play Half Life 2 and I can't. How can I fix this awful problem?????? :(

I've tried setting the settings to as low as they go, but the problem persists.

Welcome to the club.

My desktop does the same thing sometimes. Hopefully someone from Valve will read this forum and figure out what is going on.

Adding the tweaks that have been floating around decreased my crashing from once in 20 min to once in 60min. It's worth a try. It may not completely solve your problem, but it might make it playable.
Add: +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1
To the HL2 Launch options. Let me know if something is unclear and btw, your laptop is more than powerful enuf for the game, so don't heed the "Get a Desktop" comment. One caveat though, it is possible that your laptop graphics card is overheating. Set it to stock if you are overclocking it.

I don't think it is overheating because sometimes it will freeze in 15 seconds. I will try the tweaks, thanks. And I am not overclocking.

what exactly does "+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 " do, and is it somethign everyone should do?
