ok, since theres not really a half-life thread, ill post this in the half-life 2 thread.

ok, when you start a new game, do you change most of the controls, about half of the controls, or leave them alone?

I basically use the w,a,s,d-I'm not sure if that's the default.
But I do use space bar for jump and left-shift for crouch.

The "w,a,s,d"'s are the first to go, promptly replaced by the arrow keys.

Mouse wheel for jumping or weapon change (depending on which is more useful).

MOUSE4 and MOUSE5 for reload.

That's about all. :)

What the...there are such things as 5-button mouses? Or are you just egging me on?

Yeah I use Microsoft's IntelliMouse explorer. It has 2 thumb buttons. HL registers them as MOUSE4 and MOUSE5.

my mouse has five buttons, and a scroll wheel...

anyways, lonederanger, thats the most ****ed up control scheme i've ever seen anyone use.

most games are W A S D so theres not much changing to do for me, just invert the mouse, crank the sensitivity all the way up, make sure space is jump, left shift is crouch, left ctrl is walk, and im good to go.

Same.

Thanks. I don't wanna start the WASD debate again, but basically the main problem is that the W is not directly on top of the S and I have a rather large left hand as is.

I avoid using the Ctrl and Alt buttons for games because if I accidentally press Ctrl+Esc, the windows start menu appears.
And using E,S,D,F is no different than W,A,S,D.

how is it you manage to hit ctrl and esc while playing a game?? hahahah i can see hitting the windows key since its right there by ctrl, but to hit ctrl and esc you'd need to totally move your figners away from WASD.

If I set crouch to Ctrl.
Then, during gameplay, while I'm still holding crouch ,and I need to pause...there you go.

There is no key I hate more then the windows key. I can't recall how many times I ended up opening the start menu instead of crouching during a battle.

lol, just grab a spoon and flick the little bastard off:p

I use WASD with ctrl as crouch, Z as prone, shift as walk, R reload, E use. Pretty much the usual but with a couple of changes.

esc isnt usually pause, it just drops you back to the menu, usually P or the "pause" button are pause ;p

i never pause games anyways, i pity the fool who interupts my game!!

i use the arrow keys. the real arrow keys, not the keypad ones.

however,

KP_1 is strafe left, KP_3 is strafe right

kp_9 is jump, kp_7 is crouch

ctrl is alt fire

Yes, i'm a freak.

Sounds about right. R for reload, and middle mouse for use (and E). Scrolling mouse wheel changes weapons.

I replace wsad with the arrow keys
mousewheelup/down = inventory changes
mouse1 = attack
mouse2 = jump
mouse3 = secondary attack
mouse4 = reload
mouse5 = drop
enter = use
shift = walk
ctrl = crouch

Not that anyone wanted to know all of that :bounce:

W = Forward
A = Left
S = Back
D = Right

Mouse1 = Fire
Mouse 2 = Secondary Fire
Mouse 3 = Whatever it does

Space = Jump
Left CTRL = Crouch
Shift = Walk

I love that setup.

the only thing i change is:
crouch - left shift
walk - ctrl

thats basically it. I play all FPS games now w/ a HL-ish kind of set up ( tho that set-up is probably has been the "norm" of most FPS anyways )

W,A,S,D for movement.
change c to crouch, x for prone, e = use and r for reload.
and invert mouse.

E,D,S,F - movement
A - crouch
W - use
R - reload

After you get used to it you do have access to a couple more keys so I found that it was worth it to adjust from the W,A,S,D which I had been using since the quakeworld days, so it took a while to make the change.

wads sucks:cheese:

i use arrow keys, right control for jump, right shift for duck, enter for use, prone is backslash, mouse 1 and mouse2 for fire/alt fire, uh...i use the 6 buttons above the arrows (delete, end, pgdwn, insert, home, pgup) for either weapon categories (half life 1, CS, medal of honor), force powers (jedi outcast), and sometimes for leaning

the arrows is what most new ppl use because it seems logical for movement and such. then there are multiple other configs that are vital and much more efficient being WASD

i used to use arrows when i 1st started but i would always have to look down at the keyboard when i had to press other things

After playing Counter Strike for 4 years I used the arrow keys... then I started playing with the Wasd and it is alot better... especially when placing other buttons around them.

*Edit- LMAO I didn't even read this guys post right above mine. Thats great!

okay well i have by NO MEANS just started playing games, first persons have been up my alley since 6th grade. and im a senior this year...

but i use the arrow keys.. my hand feels cramped with the wasd keys completely cramped.

delete becomes my reload - end a sprint or nade or something special but often. Ctrl to crouch 0ins to jump 1-end sometimes and enter to use things and shift to walk or soemthing else special and frequent.

and i don't look at the keyboard to type at all. just preference.

you may call them noob controls, but i'll kick your @$$ :)

wasd buttons are going...putting in arrow keys

mouse 1 = attack
mouse 2 = jump
mouse 3 (scroll button) = secondary attack or zoom
scroll wheel = changing weapons

2 mouse thumb buttons
mouse 4 = reload
mouse 5 = action/use
right shift = drop

mouse1=attack
mouse2=move-run
mouse3=depends on game
scroll up/dwn=change item
scroll click= reload

s=move backwards
z=move left
x=move right
c= secondary function
shift=walk
alt=prone
ctrl=crouch
space=jump
enter=use
g=drop/pickup

tab= score menu

If the controls are the same as the original Half-Life or Counter-Strike, I don't think I'll change even one of them. :D

Arrow keys for movement.

Left Mouse = Primary Fire
Right Mouse = Jump
Left Side Mouse = Reload
Right Side Mouse = Use
Mousewheel Click = Varies with the game. Used it for voice in HL.
Mousewheel = Weapon Scrolling
Right Control = Secondary Fire
0.Ins Key = Crouch
Right Shift = Walk/Sprint

I use Delete, End, and Page Down for various things, depends on the game. I also use 1 and 4 on the Number Pad if I need more keys.

It's a bit odd but it's easy to use and i've got a lot of room on my desk anyways. Makes sense to me, heh.

:cheers:

I see a lot of people use mouse2 for jump...i use it for crouch. anyone else do this? I got this out of an old quake 2 guide and liked it so much i kept it...

all this is on the keypad section:

5=forward
2=backward
4=strafe left
6=strafe right
-=use
+=walk
enter=jump
0=crouch
.=reload
8=last weapon used
7=prev. weapon
9=next weapon
/=drop
*=flashlight

i like this combo because it's all close together. extremely easy to use once you get used to it. :D

I use the arrow keys, I find it a lot more comfatable (I can't spell).

Up - forwards
down - backwards
left and right - left and right strafe
mouse 1 - fire
mouse 2 - secondary fire
mouse 3 - jump
ctrl - crouch
shift - use
enter - reload

The only problem with this is that it hurts my little finger if I crouch for a while :p

Man, I don't care about the default control scheme, i'll just customize, I just hope you can lean in Half-Life 2...

i think jumping is more important than crouching, but jumping will probally not make much of a diffrence in hl2 as much as it would in q3 or w-et. so ill probally try crouch as mouse2 and see how it goes. mmm 23 days left ;x
