Wow that's awesome, its hard to imagine that really is real.

Well actually that's fake, just like the moon landing:|

Yeah if you look closely, you can see the reflection of the cameraman. It's just a studio in nevada.

dude, thats awesome. The government could make alot of money by shooting a ton of footage of the space shuttle flight and then selling it on DVDs

that defines the word awsome.

*EDIT*

does anyone know if there is anyway I could use that as a screensaver?

Too bad it's lagging at the start :(

just right click on the link and "save as" to download it...

That was cool, but I wanna see it fall all the way back to earth!

It would probably burn up on the way down.

Would be cool though. :rolling:

Awesome. Too bad they didn't record sound. Just doesn't seem real without it.

Well, the shuttle's top speed is around 17,000 miles per hour. That's 4 miles per second!

There might not even be sound up that high.

edit: wait, since the engine is burning that must mean -- as far as i know -- that it's combusting with something, namely oxygen? So nevermind, there probably was sound.

Well I think the engine is supplying the oxygen, and as far as I know there is no sound in a vacuum. No idea if that is true though.

That's hard to imagine...there must be some noise. Even if you did record the sound though, all you'd hear is BGHBGHBPGHBHGBHBHHBHKHGHKKHGHKGBKHB!!!

Or whatever the thrusters sound like...

Sounds transmits through excited atoms. It transmits better through solids than vapors /gases, so most likely you would hear the detaching and some clunking, with a dull roar from the exhaust of the boosters.

I bet they didn't even think of a mic...

Oh, about the fuel, everything the rockets need to burn is contained within the fuel, be it oxygen or not. I haven't read up on it but last time I did I thought they were making the switch to a solid fuel. That was a long time ago.

I've seen one of these videos before, it had sound and also showed how the booster landed on the ocean. Can't find it now though.

At the time the SRB's seperate, the shuttle isn't going fast enough to generate enough friction for anything to burn up. Only when the shuttle gets into open space does the speed really increase. You can see in the video that the main engine is still ignited, slowly propelling the shuttle into an orbital velocity. The SRBs are recovered on the ground and re-used.

Believe it or not, in that video, the shuttle is still in the upper atmosphere - so yes, there would be sound - albeit much quieter than at sea level.

God damn, I wish I could be up there right now :(

Sound doesn't travel in vacuum :|

The shuttle looks CG...

Also, video thread much?

Saw it on the news the other day.

Pretty freaking awesome.

I agree it looks like very detailed CG, but I attribute that to the quality of the camera, be it really lame, or really awesome. I just don't know.

The reason why it looks CG is because the sunlight that is hitting the shuttle is 'pure' - eg. it is unfiltered, it isn't passing through any atmosphere and it just looks "too clean". It's the sort of light you'd get in CG, hence why it looks a bit CG'ey - but it isn't. It's just space.
