I was thinking about how farcry handled the CD copying problem by going so far as not playing on a machine if it had CD copying software on it or even in certain CD rom drives. Hopefully, that has been fixed because I'd be pretty pissed if I couldn't play HL2 simply cuz i had the off-brand CD rom drive.

I also understand the big problem facing PC gaming companies: piracy. I agree that copying a 50 dollar game, copying it 10 times and selling it for 5 bucks each is wrong. BUT- do we still have the right to have a backup copy of our software? if we do, then it's a catch-22, we can only make 1 copy but what prevents us from making the 10 or 20 other copies?

Gabe, any word on this very important issue? I will understand if you cannot post specifics.

Backing Up’ games is illegal, as it violates the Trademarks and Copyright of the Publisher.

I never understood why people back games up.. how often do you lose/scratch CDs to the point where they don't work? Seriously..

It states in MOST liscense agreements that 1 copy can be made for backup purposes only. Figuring that you have a legit copy.
Multiple thousand dollar programs have this agreement, their licence system is almost flawless, so they can trust in most people to make backups so they don't have a heart attack if they drop the CD. Or if it shatters in the drive.
For Far Cry, that might seem a bit overkill, unless you only backup CD 1 since it is the PLAY CD.

Alot of people make the backups after giving a call to the corporation just to be safe. After the copy is made, the software is stored in a lockbox in case the company were to burn down, or theft.

@shuzer

Well, what if I stepped on your HL2 CD (collectors edition if they make it)? Maybe you made a backup and I stepped on that?
You never need something until it's too late....
