I don't see why not. You own the rights to the software, you can acquire the bins and use your legitimate CD key to play online. That's pretty much the point in a CD key, that is your proof you purchased or own the rights to the software, not where you got the download from.

Unfortunately CD keys are easier to steal than the CDs themselves, which was always a flaw in the concept...

He's not entitled to a retail copy if getting it through Steam, though.

I have no problems with it, but honestly, this whole question is useless. Any warez copy you find will have cracks to bypass cdkey checks or simply give a generated CDKey. If the latter, you can put your legit key in. But what's the point?

It's like asking if an audio CD will work in a stolen CD player (unrelated analogy, just putting forth how useless a question this was). Of course it will, why even bother asking someone?

Ummm, all your guys statements apply for singleplayer only. The auto-CDkey-gens dont go online, nor do no-CD cracks.

So his CD-key would probably work offline, but not online or with steam updates, as Steam probably recognizes the CD key as invalid.
I'd be interested to see what happens.

Gotta buy it anyway to play online though. So I'm gonna.

Well, gorgon, That is quite literally stealing a CD key, and that most definitely works on pirated copies. The hard part is getting legitimate CD-keys.
