Count them, then count them again. :)

Switches between 12 men and 13 men :|, wierd how they did it tho :)

By moving the original image around - so where did the extra guy come from???

No cheating (googling)

ha, I counted them twice really quickly and got 12 both times then the image finally moved n' i thort bah!

anyone notice how the men get a whole lot shorter when it moves and one looses the top of his head :D wonder where all them pixels went :|

Each man loses a part of his body in the translation. Thing is, that part, in some cases, isn't whole, but when combined with another man, missing that part entirelly, it seems complete, thus looking shorter.
For example, one guy loses his hair, and doesn't get anything back. His hair goes to a guy that lost half his face, but will look complete with just the new hair. This guy's half head goes to another one that lost his head and neck, but whose chest, combined with the the semi-head, lseems complete, just shorter.
Another guy loses his legs at thigh level (thus wearing pants), then get added to another guy's legs that where cut off at the knee (thus creating two pairs of pants from a single pair). Same thing happens with shoes, some start with a complete pair, but loose part of them, retaing enough to still seem whole. These lost parts are given to men that had their legs cut off at at ankle level, and now, with just half a shoe, they seem whole.

Whoever created this gif is a smart, tricky guy.

Aye, Rilcon is right, since the answers out, here it is in more detail: -

"First of all there are 4 groups that we deal with in total; A(left) and B(right) which are original and resultant groups C and D. In group A there are originally 5 people and 7 in group B on the right. At the end there are 6 in A and 7 in B. How does this happen?

For the sake of clarity, I will simply refer to the people(or parts of people) as numbers. The key to solving this is keeping track of the number of body parts and how they match up. Here we go….

There are 5 parts in group A that move over over to group B. There are also 5 parts that move from group B to group A. Note that 2 of the original 7 in group B never actually leave group B so the total in the new group D(on the right) remains 7, (7-5)+5=7 So let’s ignore that group now, as it has no bearing on the outcome.

We have 5 from group B that came over to interact with group A. Here’s where the “trick” on your mind is played. 4 of the 5 from group B interact with the original group A. This means that there is 1 whole body (virtuually)from the original group B that doesn’t interact with any from group A and 1 from original group A that isn't interacted with, by any from group B. So this means that you end up with 6 in the resultant group C, 4+1+1=6. If that doesn’t make sense to you, let me put it this way. The guy on the far left of the screen never interacts with anyone from group B and the guy in the very back right of group B never interacts with anyone. So you have on the new group that is created on the left, 4 that interact and 2 that don’t and that’s where you get 6. The trick happens because you count 2 of those people in the new group as complete. Note the guy on the far left has a sliver of his head missing and the guy that seems to pop out from nowhere has a sliver of his feet missing. But you're counting them as whole people aren't you, even though they're missing those pieces because no one from the "other" group has come over to complete them.
So in the end it's a visual trick to get you to make a computational error. So in reality there are 11 complete persons and 2 incomplete."

Very tough on the brain, that one :)

Wow, you guys did an excellent job analyzing and explaining that gif. In fact it sounds like you two know enough to make something similar to it if you wanted to.

MY BRAIN!!! MY BRAAAAAAAIIIIIIN!!!!!! It's killing me, argh!
