OK - I've lurked for ages, and finally I'm going to post.

I've been looking at all the debate about the multiplayer aspect of hl2, and the silence of valve is very interesting.

Also interesting is the other (not counter-strike 2) half-life 2 engine project the counter-strike team have admitted they've been working on. They say that they're unbale to talk about this project yet, and this leads me to think that it's valve keeping them quiet about this one.

Is the project Counter-Strike Classic - a simple port of the original mod into the new engine a la Team Fortress Classic?

Think about it - history may be repeating itself. When Half-life was released, there were no multiplayer modes apart from straight deathmatch. TFC was released in apatch a little later to provide more official multplayer variety. Will Counter-Strike Classic fill a similar role, the main difference being that it would probably be released "on the CD"?

I know this is just speculation, but I have a gut feeling.

May be because I haven't eaten today though... :s

So we would have what now?
Regular CS
CS:CZ
CS2
CS Classic

And then? CS: Nude Attack? CS: Aliens? CS: Swat? CS: SAS?

I dont think my stomach could handle this :p

Hah! I know how you feel Dawdler :)

I'm hoping CS2 will be released in the months following HL2 but there's no rush, there's still "normal" CS 1.5 and 1.6

As for your post Gertrum, the answer could be a mix of a simple port and enhancements/improvements: it could be CS oldschool but with new additions such as weapons vehicles etc...

I have a theory with absolutely no basis so feel free to ignore it.

Multiplayer will be first person manipulator gun tetris. It'll work trust me.

Seriously though it would be foolish for valve not to release a new cs of some sort on source, wether that is what the cs team is working on who knows.

I would like to see a cs like game in terms of objectives, teams, rounds and purchasing weapons but I could do without the terrorist and counter-terrorist and current weapons. CS has about 20 guns in and only 4 ever get used. Maybe combine vs ???? or wild west or something might work.

The problem is vehicles which have been mentioned along with the map size would suggest to me the multiplayer for hl2 will be something altogether different.

Ya a combine vs. Civilian multiplayer wouldnt be nice, but i think that that will probalby be with the HL 2 multiplayer :borg: :borg:

Well, when I questioned Gabe about the possibility of a team of players (not from Valve) porting CS over to HL2, he didn't repond to my e-mail... Which is odd, because he's responded to ALL of my e-mails (even the goofy, off the wall ones). Doesn't add up, and I was very curious about it.

Valve including the original CS in HL2 is a real possibility, in my opinion.

Well If they did it would be CS 1.6, which is currently only in Beta on Steam, so most people would see new weapons etc. I doubt they are still working on CS CZ, and I think thats a bit harsh releasing that now with HL2 and CS2 (or an unofficial mod) just around the corner.

just like when HL1 came out there was multiplayer history will repeat and there will be HL2 multiplayer the cs port to hl2 will happen eigther from sierra or not its going to happen...

Yeah..... the exact same crappy game on the newer engine....that sounds like a great idea.......

/me shoots self in head

Blah.

TFC was just something they ported over because they originally said TF2 was going to be a mod for Half-Life. That’s honestly the only reason I bought the game. Course, when I heard that TF2 was going to be its own stand alone game, I felt cheated. In retrospect, I'm glad I bought it, but at the time I was pretty upset.

Anyway - that’s why they released TFC. The wanted to originally "tide us over" till TF2 came out as a mod, then they just kind of ... didn't mention anything about TF2 anymore other then it was going to be a stand alone game.

And not to go too far off topic here ... it just really bugs the hell out of me when I meet people who think TFC is an original game/concept. What I mean is, they've never played - let alone know - what TF is or even Quake for that matter. Like creating TFC was some kind of miracle or something. And it bugs the hell out of me every freaking time I see someone say TFC2. I just want to bitch slap them across the damn face. Anyone who even played TF will tell you its way better - game play wise - then TFC has and will ever be. It’s called Team fortress CLASSIC, BECAUSE it’s a remake of a mod for Quake called Team Fortress. They didn't just pull Classic out of their ass and decide to tack it on at the end of the name. Team Fortress Classic 2. What the kind of damn hell sense does that make? TFC feels like a half assed port to me.

Now that I've thoroughly de-railed the topic - I'm not expecting great things from HL2 MP outside of the usual DM. I expect they may have a few mod teams working with them and may include the mods with HL2 - but from Valve, all I'm expecting is DM .. and maybe ricochet ... lol

Actually they said CS2 as in CS 2.0. So there's no chance it will be 1.6

Also I thought you should know Valve has had nothing to do with the actual coding of CZ: Ritual is behind CZ.

All this talk makes me hungry

FOR HL2!!!!

and a cheese sandwich on the side.

hmmmmmm, fooooooood.....................

brb.

i thought it was already established the Sven Co-Op was working with Valve on a Co-op mod. And TF for Quake 1 was awesome they made one for quake2 called Weapons Factory. Same exact mod different name. But damn that was fun mod.

a western roundbased multiplayer game would go down well. I fondly remember Outlaws had great multiplayer support. It's been a while since a good western came on the scene.

Whatever they do with CS2, I hope they make the WC3 plugin for it. This time around, they should make it easier to turn on and off.......

Oh yeah, and much more weapons. Maybe a good sized selection like The Specialists ( www.thespecialistsmod.net ) or Rainbow 6: Ravenshield has....

If they were going to make a CS Classic version It would be 1.6 tho wouldnt it?

Ah, some1 else being behind it explains a few things :)

Classic version? Hmm I think this is a job for a mod-team rather than valve but who knows (not me) :)

actually it is a known fact that multiplayer is a port of the ever-popular astounding ricochet! whizzz!

I don't know why but apparently lots of people hate Ricochet... is it because they can't use aimbots and wall hacks?
Personally, I find it to be a refreshing change of pace from games like Counter-Strike. Another Tron mod I liked was Palisade (light-cycles).

Anyway... I highly doubt they would be keeping such a tight lid on the multiplayer if all they will have is DM, Team DM, and/or Ricochet.

what, with cs1.6 around the corner it will be lame, or at least counterproductive. unless, of course, you're talking about a cs2.0 that can play online with cs1.5 and 1.6... then that's a completely different story

CS2 and CS 1.6 wont be compatible, that would be like saying Unreal Tourny users can play against Unreal Tourny 2k3 users.

People hate ricochet because it's the worst mod ever made after box wars...

After reading the CS:Aliens/Sas/etc. post I thought the exact same thing. How many spin-offs has that got now?

This thread is about a month old... But it still has relevence. :)

There's three in the family. Law & Order, Criminal Intent and Special Victims Unit.

I've actually only ever really watched Criminal Intent though, not the other two :).

Excellent theory!

Reasoning behind CS2 coming with HL2:

1) I don't see them making a CSC because TFC was to hold us off until TF2... and CS2 could (should) be done by now.

TF2 was delayed because they scrapped the entire game and started on a new engine for HL2 and TF2... because the old one was looking dated.

They won't have to do that with CS2 because it has been in development for at least a couple of years on the not-even-released-yet Source engine.

If they release anything CS-related on the Source engine it will be CS2.

2) They have never (if I am wrong about this give me a link) come out and given us a definite "No, CS2 will not come with HL2."
... only a "No comment."

3) Counter-Strike will bring the most people over to the Source engine... easily.

So, if they include CS as a free addon it will bring in tons of people and give them a huge market share on which to push their other products via Steam.

2) They have never (if I am wrong about this give me a link) come out and given us a definite "No, CS2 will not come with HL2."
... only a "No comment."

This is what I've found most interesting when thinking about all of this. We've heard a definate "No" to TF2 being the multiplayer for HL2... But a "No comment" regarding CS2 for HL2's multiplayer. It just makes me suspicious.

If CS2 was included with HL2, well Valve will be rolling in the cash when the time comes for release. And really, CZ got pretty average reviews, maybe they'll just scrap it all for HL2 perhaps?
