I was watching Jay Leno the other day, and he had a musical guest on called Wynonna. I had no clue who she was, so I figured it was going to be some dodgy American country singer (which I don't doubt she is), but it was actually a pretty decent rock song called Attitude, check out the MP3 somewhere.

Then later on I was watching Conan O'Brien and he had a musical guest whose name I can't remember. I figured that it was some Texan with his lame country music. Singing-wise it was, but the music behind it was actually some pretty decent rock.

Sure, in both these songs the lyrics were extremely lame, but it was still some cool rock music.

So what's up with music nowadays, are there really no rock bands around with a flamboyant frontman that can create this kind of stuff? Are we really stuck with bands like System of a Down for all eternity? I'm getting tired of replaying my early-90's CD's over and over.

Well rock has become somewhat fractured as of late (alternative/retro/progressive/punk/etc), but I still have no problem finding great rock bands.
Some favorites: Black Rebel Motorcycle Gang, Everclear, Flogging Molly, Foo Fighters, Gomez, Jane's Addiction, Jet, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Oasis, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Vines, Wallflowers, Weezer, and the White Stripes.
And of course, most of the oldschool rock is still as good as ever.

What do you mean by flamboyant frontman?

In my mind that is like Kiss, Twisted Sister and Van Halen. I personally dont like those kinda bands. I prefer different styles of frontmen, ones that want to rock, instead of spend all day in make up and prancing around like a, well you get the idea.

Give me some Chris Cornell from Audioslave, some very good high quality rock from them. You have Slipknot bit too 'nu-metal' for some, but still some underlying good rock in there.

However, rock music has slipped since 80's and 90's during the hey-day of Metallica, Maiden, Guns, and Nirvana. Though it is on its way back with bands liek Trivium and Bullet for my Valentine.

Ok, maybe flamboyant wasn't the right word, although I do like that type. I do like Chris Cornell as a frontman, especially for Soundgarden. And Audioslave are one of the few decent bands around, but they're hardly great. A frontman who's interesting and has an good voice is more what I want to see, like Cornell and Layne Staley. Maybe even Axl Rose. Someone who can make headlines.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Gang, Everclear, Flogging Molly, Foo Fighters, Gomez, Jane's Addiction, Jet, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Oasis, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Vines, Wallflowers, Weezer, and the White Stripes.
Of course I disagree with most of those being good rock bands, but it's just my opinion. The only ones I like from those are REM, some RHCP and that's about it. Most of those aren't really new bands either.

Well they're still rock bands, and all have current projects. It's just an answer to your question: yes, there are people still doing rock. Hell, I'll take the current ones over most of what came out of the eighties and early nineties.

She's been all over the place promoting that new single. I hate that song. It's not so bad the first time, but when you hear it on every single talk show ever, it starts to get old really fast. She does have a decent voice, but that's as far as it goes for me.

I guess I could tell you to check out the new Bon Jobi album or something. I don't really know much about this music.
Yeah, I'm not saying it's amazing, but it would pretty pretty good if it was a rock band doing it with some decent lyrics. Musically it kinda reminds me of something Days of the New would do. Days of the New are pretty decent, although I still put them in the Silverchair category as they're essentially just doing what came before them, but doing it worse, like Creed.

I've heard Bon Jovi on some talk shows over here but I'm not really liking their new single.

You haven't seen enough bands
Recommend some, preferably nobody that's charted very high, since I've probably already heard of them.

Old-school country is amazing. I always listen to the country station on San Andreas.

All country is horrid. You can't convince me otherwise no matter how "rocking" it is. I'll take my 90's shit any day.

Which is why rock musicians need to do more psycho-drugs like shrooms and LSD, to bring the rock back into RAWK!

I love Neil Young! Note that I too listen to K ROSE in San Andreas.

"I run through life naked with a torch in one hand and a sword in the other."

Make me go through my mp3 collection.... Try the Shins, Piebald, Muse, Ben Kweller, Beulah, Cake (yes, they're still around!), The Flamping Lips, Hot Hot Heat (their new CD only, older stuff is pretty obnoxious to me), Jets to Brazil, The Killers, The Paper Chase, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and the Weakerthans.

neil young is not country ...folk, folk-rock but not country

I cant stand modern country music ..I like the older stuff: patsy kline, johnny cash ..but god this new country crap is just plain aweful ..it's either pretty boys/girls singing about nothing in particular or pretty boys/girls singing about how great america is ..it's just nauseating stuff ...give me good ol crying over your beer songs any day over the majority of fluff that passes off as country music

oh and if you need something rocking listen to rockabilly

I'm sure country has its more underground stuff thats good, we just don't hear about it. I mean hell, Johnny Cash was still making music (good stuff too) up until relatively recently.
Edit: And Hot Hot Heat has some decent older stuff too. Just have to rummage around for it a little.
