CPU runnign at 72C

When I run a vide game the CPU heats up to over 72C(170F). When it is idle, the lowest it gets is 62C. My system temp is 40-45. I have an amd xp 2500+ and a gigabyte mobo. I tried turning the fan in the door around, and then taking the door all the way off... Nothing.These are way too high correct? I just E-mailed the store that sold it to me, but they won't be in until the morning...

System Temp: 40-45(thats normal right? Shouldn't CPU be near that?)

Dude, thats way too high.

Something is wrong with your heatsink and/or thermal paste.
If you dont know how to put it on, have someone else do it for you, asap.

Your case is normal, and your cpu should be around that.

When I purchased it, they said it would be best if THEY installed it... Jackasses. I am going to just not play tonight untill they E-mail me back. The last board we purchased from them was fine, but maybe they did a crappy install job on it this time...

But yeah, that's a shitload to hot. My CPU runs at around 45C, and I think that is hot.

do you have an intake fan to bring air in? and one at the back to blow air out?

and its definately your stock Heatsink and Fan that is shit if you have an intake and extraction fan...

my cpu is down in my sig but its a 2000xp+ overclocked on a plain cheap 10-15£ heatsink and fan... (the retail heatsinks and fans (AMD stickerones) thefans are 60mill and thats too small in my opinion...)

my current temp is 38 idle and 40-43 gaming

THAT is hot...
definetly heatsink/fan/paste problems on that CPU. maybe it isnt strait or touching all the way. Im assuming you have even pressure in your case. same amount of fans blowing hot air out as you have fans bringing in fresh cool air in.
The fan on the cpu should blow down too...should already be like that but may want to check. Any window fan on the side of the case over the cpu blowing out instead of in? have no idea what your case setup is so.

AMD have a lifetime garuntee on thier CPU's running at 80c constant... its just better if they run cooler for stability reasons...

Basicly. Though it is a bit different for each core.

oldi1knoby, just so you know, the thermal paste that everyone talks about comes pre-applied right on the top of your CPU in a thin clear coat. When you crank your heatsink down on top it meshes with the CPU. You dont have to buy "high performance" thermal paste, unless you are a l337 0c'3r.

I have a xp2000+ that runs almost that hot. I have gone through 2 heatsyncs and nothing worked. I'm just gunna replace it in a few weeks, as it doesnt seem to be the case/fans/heatsync. you could be having a similar problem to me, and the only solution I have come across is a new mobo+processor.

Programs like Motherboard Monitor and ASUS Probe are good for monitoring system temperatures
(Note that ASUS Probe only works on ASUS motherboards, duh )

Yes. On my dell you cant check temps... Theres no sensor.
