CPU underclocked? (help)

is it dual core? some cpus may under clock when they arent under load. i dont think pentiums ever had that feature it was only amd.

Do a google search for CPU-Z and download that program. Tells you exactly what the CPU is running at. The FSB speed should be 133Mhz (533 rated) and the multiplier should be at 20 for a P4 2.66GHz cpu (133Mhz x 20 = 2660).

Check bios.

I don't think P4's down clocked when idle. Just when they overheated.

I've seen this happen on a way old machine of mine, p4, too. Or maybe it was an AMD. Anyway, As far as I remember, it underclocked itself after a hard reboot. If the same is the case here, you will be presented with a message you have to press F1 to when you restart the computer and it's at the BIOS stage.

p4's, as with most processors, throttle themselves back under extreme heat...or if you're on a laptop, processors do this often to save power/make less heat.

lol...guys

i can't believe you never heard of intel speed step or amd cool'n quiet. It's been around for ages now (the P4 has it, too). If not under load the cpu will downclock itself to save energy and get cooler - to save life time.

It's a feature that's enabled by default and it does NOT need to be turned off. Even when you play games, you will not notice that it's on and when the CPU realizes you need the power, it will clock itself up - which hasn't caused any stuttering problems yet anywhere - at least not that i have ever heard of some.

bottom line: leave it as it is, no need to fix something that's not broken.

edit: use cpu-z, start a cpu intensive program and see how the clock speed will raise until the program doesn't need it anymore.
