If everybody is making mods to this game why does some body create the ending that would satisfy people who did not like the original? :afro:

The Half-Life 2 ending wasn't all that satisfying, but it was designed to create a lot of room for Half-Life 3, which will be out in about 3 years, as Gabe said. I think we all eventually have to learn to live with the way HL2 ended. :p

The ending was superb, it did exactly what was needed of a halflife game, it left it open to debate on what was going to happen next, with a who variety of things to happen in HL3. Anything could happen. Alyx alive/dead? gman good/bad? All combine dead/alive? We're not sure on anything, which leaves the story completely open. If you'd prefer a cliche ending with a big boss then go find Doom 3 or something, Half-life 2 is a different FPS. Try and understand the story and you'll soon love the ending.
and btw what does making a different ending achieve? its not valves work and it would mean that we have a story that is wrong. Gordon vs Mech Warrior Breen...please

I love the ending...and I like the whole recurring train, metro tramish, this is where I/we/you get off theme....Im think I'm going to go play through it again

Not to say that I did not like the ending I just want to see what somebody would create. Because without HalfLife there would be no Counter Strike. I wish I could make the Half Life 1.5 :Combine World War.

I had a think of how, thought some more, then ultimatley decided i could make it any dam better. The ending of half life 2 is superb imho

It was a great ending, however it left too many issues open, I thought anyways. I felt like it should have been a little more wrapped-up, but it did leave me way excited for hl3.

Regardless of whether or not you like the cliff hanger a lot of people considered the ending to be far too brief. Some even go far enough to call it half assed. But I sort of consider all of the scripted sequences in Our benefactors and Dark Energy to be part of an extended ending. 2 Train rides and the most amazing character scene I have ever seen in a video game (Breen’s Office). The character expressions are amazing and the voice acting is like a breath of fresh air for the video game industry. Dr. Breen was especially good. Plus you get to wreak havoc with the organic gravity gun and battle 2 gunships simultaneously with energy balls. Then wham... You get blindsided by the G-Man. I would call that an awesome ending.

Durring the explosion you hear the words "Containment field activeated" faintly
After the credits you wake up in Breen's office
"Hello Dr. Freeman, I'm glad we will get the chance to work together"

Because, as sure as people are that the HL2 ending was unsatisfactory, they couldn't write a better one if they tried?

In the ending for hl3 I hope we finally get to see what he carries in his briefcase

in HL3 everyone will be old: barney will throw his pills and his beer at a headcrab, Eli will folow us with his rusty hightech wheelchair and a shotgun, alyx will fight an antlionguard with her cane and kleiner will stare his ennemies to death with his huge glasses of doom while wearing his personnal teleporting headcrab.

Well, the ending was enough for me eventhough it was a bit confusing. Bec. of that ending... it made me more excited to play HL3.

I didnt find it confusing, well, maybe a little. But it makes it quite obvious what gmans goal actually is.

What I would like to see for the final ending.

Breen gets reduced to atoms along with his teleporter
G-man manipulates time, removes Alyx, Gordon and all essential personnel from the resulting explosion. G-man sends Gordon packing straight away to the Combine worm Gods to annihilate them in another episode, delivering the Universe from tyranny forever, but hey, I guess that would just be too simple and "romantic"....aye?

Fido

Nah, nah,

The explosion of the teleporter results in a giant ball of white energy appearing at the center of city 17. As it spreads across the city it destroys everything in its path, until three psychic children intervene and pick up the "innocent" civilians in a kind of perverted rapture-like cleansing of the city.

Gordon floats through the miasma, until the sound of Alyx' voice brings him back. Barney appears seemingly out of nowhere overcome by emotion at seeing his friends have survived the explosion.

After its all said and done, the sun breaks through the clouds, and the trio rides away on beat up motorcycles.

naw, they would ride away on a strider. that would be awesome.

I wish we would have been able to see the citidel get blown to shit. I was kind of sad when G-man froze time. But other than that, that was a great ending. I would like to see other endings however, just because they would be fun to play.

Would make for a killer opening cinematic in an expansion game, or sequal.

couldnt of said it any better.. making something which is not the genuine article, pfft. The ending was clever stuff.. far better than an onslaught of combine forces or a boss. If somone made an alternate ending I might read about it, but like hell id play it.. HL2's story, the whole story of Half Life has a unique feeling, the ending of HL2 being a distinctive part of it, besides its valves creation, its a bit harsh if you say "o great game! but that ending just didnt do it for me, you know ,its just,.. I thought something else might happen you see... ... so even though its already established guys.... can I change your ending around a little bit!?".

enter Mecha Breen.

Although I don't think the ending was too bad (beats the crap out of halo 2) but I it was sort of disappointing when the g-man frozed time and then went on. It just sort of removes something away from the g-man as before I was imagining he was working for a goverment which went underground (perferably US) but now he look like a god or at least not human which to me cliche.

I can imagine an even more insane/better ending... When that explosion happen you see it stop at an area with hearing in the background "contaiment field activated, pressure too great, aproximate time 15 untill collaspe" then you have to get the hell out in 15 mins which alyx quickly took you to the elavator to a floor where she said that it have a hanger and then it just an huge insane rush to the nearest ship to fly out and as you run you will see both combine and rebels (they manage to storm in the citadels and was fighting up the tower) panicing and trying to run to the hangers as they shoot each other. Then you manage to climb in a helicopeter where some rebels, eli, and mossman manage to clear out the combine inside and alyx take pilot and flies the hell out which then it begins to crash and you black out as everyone screams. The next thing you know, your in a room with the g-man

This is interesting. So does Breen say this? Cause if so then it seems that Breen, or at least the Combine as a whole, was the highest bidder.
I doubt that VALVe would all of a sudden make Gordan bad on purpose. If Breen is Gordan's new taskgiver, VALVe would write the story so you think you are doing good and then all of a sudden you will kill a "Combine" soldier that is really Barney. and then things would get hairy. or maybe Breen gets transported back in time and this is really the time when Gordan is hired by Black Mesa, who knows.

I think ríomhaire was suggesting an alternate ending, rpgprog. The only thing in HL2 that happens after the credits is a cool little skit with Lamarr jumping at the camera.

Actually I Can't Quite Remember Exactly, But In Half-Life 1 In Noclip Mode You Could See Whats Inside The Case, Just Can't Remember What Part Of It...
And I Love The Way They End The Games, They Leave Everything Out In The Open, Which Makes Me (And Most Other People) Wonder What Happens Next, And We Go Buy The Next Game, And So On, And So On...

well, we could try it on HL2 and have a little look in his briefcase.

Try this one

Okay okay okay, I guess I have to give this a serious shot. God knows, nobody else is going to. Gabe Newell & Marc Laidlaw, take note...

----------

Everything happens normally up until the time-freeze. Instead of a time-freeze, the G-man instead activates a force-bubble like Breen was using about 15ft in diameter around the both of you. You two are floating inside, and you can move up and down slowly (like in the time-freeze) as if in zero-g. The G-man appears to be standing in midair, instead of floating like you are. The bubble, instead of pink like Breen's, is clear and slightly shimmering, the better to give you a view of the coming events outside.

As this happens, Alyx (confused and floating next to you), says, "Hey, what...?" but gets whisked away at a look from the G-man. Her body turns semitransparent and we see her form go flying waaaay out towards the edge of the city, as if hit by an exceptionally-strong primary fire of the advanced manipulator gun.

A series of explosions (sound blocked out by the force bubble) flash outside. The reactor tower topples down the shaft. Below you, the city is lit by sporadic flashes of distant gunfire; gunships fly back and forth; towers of smoke stream in the wind from various points in City 17.

G-man says something along the lines of (imagine this in G-man's voice), "Your...companion...is quite safe...for the time being. I understand her importance to you, and since you have done such a great deal in such a short time span, I have elected to...preserve her...for a time. Perhaps she will even have some use in the course of...well, I'm not at liberty to say."

Slowly, almost as if in slow-mo, the Combine Citadel begins to fall out from underneath and from all around you. It breaks into pieces as it falls, each as large as several city blocks. Throughout the G-man's next speech, you watch below through the bubble as the ruin of the Citadel CRASHES down into the (equally-ruined) city, smashing and shattering the ground, sending up fiery plumes and enormous clouds of smoke...

G-man glances down at the spectacle a mile below and smiles his creepy smile just a bit. "You've done so well, in fact, once again, that I have seen fit to extend your employment."

The smoke slowly clears below, and now the city has become even more a panorama of destruction. Nearly a quarter of it is on fire, the blazes spread haphazardly around wherever debris landed. Long pieces of the Citadel are sticking up out of the ground like fallen arrows of the gods. In the space after the Citadel fell, it seems oddly peaceful.

G-man continues (morbidly serious): "You see, this...confrontation...is far from over. In fact, it has hardly begun, and you were never meant to serve a purpose beyond this first step. There are...others...whom I have recruited, who must now play their parts."

The bubble begins moving, perhaps passing some columns of smoke, each nearly as big as the Citadel was before. Soon you have left the city behind and are at the shoreline. It is sunset, the clouds tinged a spectacular blood-red. In the distance, over the sea, Combine satellites are streaking down like meteors. Several pass close to the bubble so you get a good look at them, and a few crash on land, in case you missed those. It looks like the stars are falling.

G-man (more hopeful): "But your performance, especially considering the rather...extensive following...you have gathered among your peers, demands that your services be retained yet again."

The bubble moves again, out over the ocean, and night swiftly falls. The whole world outside goes black, and all you can see is the G-man. Even the bubble is gone. Then things fade back in, and it's.......the tram from the first game, again.

G-man (as the tram door slides open): "So congratulations, Mr. Freeman. It seems you have not seen the last of your days. Unfortunately, the times ahead will be quite dire, and the stakes are now...greatly increased. But I am confident you will prove yourself worthy once again. In the meantime...this is where I get off."

G-man steps through a portal at the tram's door, and you are released to move around after the door closes (for what good that does you...)

The screen says:
"SUBJECT: FREEMAN
STATUS: EMPLOYMENT EXTENDED.
AWAITING FIELD DEPLOYMENT."

Geez, that was long. How about it? Leaves everything open for the next game, but doesn't give the abrupt "WHAM! THE END!" feeling. Even opens the door for Alyx/Barney/Shephard games/expansions later on. I know that whole sequence would be really hard to do, with the Citadel falling and all, but Valve has proven themselves ambitious and resourceful in pulling off everything else up to that, so why stop there?

I like it :) However, I suppose the reason why we never saw anything like this is not because Valve were incapable of devising something of this calibre (or better), but because they do not want to commit themselves to the direct effects of the Citadel explosion (either because they want it to be a HL3 surprise or simply because they're not sure), including the fates of the characters and City 17 itself. Alyx's cliffhanger "death" may be an opportunity for Valve to gauge the success of the character and decide whether to bring her back in a later installment - if they feel that the audience didn't like her, she stays dead and Vice-Versa.

The explosions sends alyx and gordon flying through the wall behind, and the citadel begins to crumble. Dog suddenly appears, puts them both on a dropshop and forces it down to the city.

The citadel explodes, and all the rebels cheer. Suddenly a big pink bubble is seen and thousands of citizens walk over to it and see dr breen trapped inside, nice and safe.

They attach ropes to it and parade it through the street, jeering breen.

Gordon joins in with the celebrations with alyx and co, laughing at breen when gman comes and whisks him away...

Just for a laugh :D

G-man Said.....

Hey,
I thought that when G-man said "This is where i get off" ,the game's ending is it's beginning.I mean at the end (not shown) G-man get off, you here the train and the "I didn't see you get on" speech from the guy in blue.

I thought this was the original? But if it's not than what is?????????

My favorite ending scenario that I created (recycled from a previous thread)...

Gordon spends way too much time in that slow-glidy walking cinematic mode, and eventually learns how to moonwalk. He becomes world-famous as a new pop idol, achieving a Michael Jackson-like status, even without the ability to vocalize. The combine plan their next full-on portal assault, and time their invasion so as to coincide with a global Freeman concert. With all of Earth's human population in one place, caught unaware, the Combine forces easily wipe out/assimilate the remaining Human population. In a cinematic you see a huge mothership descend out of the sky, where, tragically, only Gordon himself notices. Once again, with the inability to vocalize, he is unable to call the attention of the crowd to the impending armageddon. The entire Earth's population gets vaporized, Gordon Freeman remains, because thank God for that hazard suit. At the end of the cinematic, the camera zooms way in to the bridge of the mothership, where you see a sarcastically grinning G-Man at the controls, because, you know, that'll make everyone say "what the f**k". Then Batman swoops down and kicks the G-Man in teh face, and after a large battle Batman impales him with a wooden stake. This kills all the Combine population because the G-Man is the lead vampire, naturally, and then Gordon and Batman enjoy a beer together. This is an uneasy coexistence, since eventually they know that they are going to have to fight to the death ... because, you know, there can be only one.

Just a curious question, but why does everone say the ending left it wide open for HL3?

The fact of the matter (at least I hope it's fact) is that before HL3 there will be an expansion pack to HL2.

The big question is, will the expansion pack take place directly after the explosion in the Citidel?

If it is, then the ending left it wide open for HL2.5, not HL3. :p

Its not a fact, its been confirmed that half life 3 is in development, yet at the same time, they are developing an expansion pack.

Two different things already confirmed.

It seems doubtful that the expansion will happen after the explosion on Citadel 17. It already seems hinted, and is mostly speculated that the Alyx expansion will take place before Gordon arrives, probably to avoid all the plot intigues that the end of HL2 opens up. What the end of HL2 may have done, is kill off certain very important characters - why on earth would they answer the questions the audience have in an expansion pack that not everyone will buy?

Besides this, the convention for Expansion packs in the HL universe is to have them running alongside the original game: even the lengthy sections after Gordon has gone to Xen aren't necessarily after Gordon defeats the Nihlianth, as Marc Laidlaw himself has pointed out.
