Creating large partitions in PartitionMagic

I'm trying to create a secondary partition for Windows98 so I can dual boot between it and XP (got some old skool apps that refuse to work on XP). I've tested this on my other computer, after seeing it working as I wanted to, I decided to give it a go on this computer (I know it's not recommended to attempt a dual boot install of 98 after you install XP, but PartitionMagic lets you do it without a hiccup).

PartitionMagic will only let me create a partition that is 10% the size of my available 20GB on my HD (2.1GB max). I want to create a partition that's 10GB in size.. anyone know of a way I can do this in PartitionMagic?

I'd be willing to create a partition manually with the XP CD if I know it too would go forward without a hiccup (I only was able to test PartitionMagic post-XP 98 dual boot install, so I'm wary of manually creating a partition and using Partition/BootMagic to install 98).

FAT32 for Win98. I can do FAT, but it's the same issue.

Also, if I try to create an NTFS partition, I run into the same issue. Take a look at the attached screenshot to see what I mean

What version are you using? It looks pretty old. Pick up PM7 or PM8 and try it again...

For now I have no idea what could be the problem. Can you create bigger logical partitions or that isn't possible either?

I'm using PM8.1 :|

That's what's funny, it'll only let me create a partition that's 10% of my free space.. =(

I have no idea if that was the case before

The maximum size of FAT is 2.1GB, so I think that the problem is something with FAT. Maybe the part you're trying to partition is formatted as FAT...

Try tips :o

Well, I'm aware the maximum size for FAT is 2.1GB. I'm trying for FAT32, and it's restricting me to 10%, the same goes if I try to create an NTFS partition :|

It doesn't do this on my other computer... any chance me using Norton's defrag could've messed it up, you think?

Asus might know something about this.. he tends to know alot, so wait for him to reply..

as for Norton.. i have used different versions of it over the years and i never had trouble formatting when i had to.. *shrug*

the newer versions of Windows made me lazy... with XP all u do is pop in the CD and it takes care of formatting and installation..

can't quite remember what files are needed when ur formatting for Win 98.. yes.. its been ages since i formatted a HD that had Win 98..

Freeman, I think you missed something here. I'm not trying to format a drive, I'm trying to crate a partition to install Windows 98 to (I guess you could be talking about formatting that partition, though).

Dual booting Windows 98 is a bad idea if you already have XP installed, but PartitionMagic does the trick. I already tested installing 98 on the machine I'm on now, worked fine.

I'm defragging my main computer as we speak, I'll see if that fixes it. I reinstalled PartitionMagic on my other machine to no avail, so Norton Systemworks 2004 may be the problem at hand. I'll have to do some more tests to diagnose the exact cause, though.

BTW, installing 98 involves fdisk and the format command through DOS prompt, Freeman :) Maybe that'll jog your memory (although it's useless to you)

Okay, I fixed it. It wouldn't do it automatically for me, so I resized my C:\ drive down by 10GB, then created a new FAT32 partition from it.

No idea why PartitionMagic won't do it automatically for me anymore, though.

ops
i misread ur post and thought u wanted to format as well as partition.. hehe

right... fdisk this, Parition Magic that, i got it :upstare:

hehe j/k
i do kinda remember how to format with Win 98.. just that i haven't done it in so long.. i guess im not as confident as i used to be..

i remember i used to format every 8 months or so.. then it stretched to a year.. etc..

anyway, my mistake :o
