Pioneering computer scientist Dennis Ritchie has died after a long illness.

Mr Ritchie was one of the creators of the hugely influential Unix operating system and the equally pioneering C programming language.

A vast number of modern technologies depend on the work he and fellow programmers did on Unix and C in the early days of the computer revolution.

Those paying respects said he was a "titan" of the industry whose influence was largely unknown.

Ubuntu vigil.

I mean that's too bad. I wonder how many on this forum have experience with Unix derivatives.

And nobody cares because he didn't start any fads for the cool kids.

Sucks of course but can you blame people? I mean, it's not exactly their fault that they don't know this guy unless they go into a computer related field of study. You should be blaming the media for not giving him credit or perhaps the guy himself didn't care to be "famous".

RIP though.

Lol Dinnesch, did you not read even the first two posts?

Never even heard of the guy before today, but still, RIP.

RIP, man. Every process has to terminate eventually.

Least he didn't have a kernal panic like Hawkings.

Does anyone else find all this squabbling about who's being mourned more remarkably petty? It's no surprise Jobs is known by many, just as it's no surprise that Ritchie isn't. One was much more in the public eye, regardless of the impact of his work. Guess what, we mourn actors all the time on this board. Should we dial that down out of respect for more inventive people like this? Of course not, that's ****ing stupid. But yeah I guess wring your hands over people on the internet giving more attention to the guy who actively tried to draw attention to himself. What are the odds?

Anyway, sometimes great people aren't remembered in their time. At least in this case it's an injustice of ignorance and not contempt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine#Death

Oh man I missed the perfect thread title opportunity. "Goodbye world."

It all just goes to show that Celebrity is all that is respected.

I couldn't give a shit about people mourning a celebrity while not mourning someone better. Its the fact that people call Jobs a Genius and go off about how awesome and brilliant and how much of a hero he is after news breaks when he dies, and when news breaks of someone who is actually brilliant goes, everyone's like "meh." Its a disgrace to the entire concept of intelligence and worthiness. If you want to cry about Jobs dying, fine, but don't pretend he's a hero that changed the world, not while totally ignoring someone who actually did change the world.

Like Krynn said, I think you're missing the point of why this annoys people. Jobs was hailed on every media outlet and with many, many people as this technological genius who changed the world, which is relatively untrue. People were posting in my Facebook feed how incredibly depressed they were about it, which was honestly really ****ing weird.

And then some actual technological genius and forefather to modern computing does go up and die, but nobody gives half a shit, except a few of us nerds. The reason that is annoying to me at least isn't out of some honor for him, or some bias against Jobs. But it is extremely irritating to realize just how uninformed, reactionary, and relatively stupid mass media and the simpleton public are.

Man you people are missing the even simpler point. Is it the masses fault that this guy chose not to be known and/or the media's fault for choosing not to focus on what he did? I mean, the only reason Jobs was known was because he was the one directly speaking to the masses so they felt like their beloved apple products were the children of the guy in a black turtle neck and jeans introducing it to them; Steve Jobs.

Had the creator of Unix were to host big events on what Unix was and how it worked and all that then of course he'd be remembered and hailed by the masses.

What about all those people in the background who helped develop the special effects for movies and such? Are they hailed and praised or is it the director and actors - the ones who are communicating directly to the audience.

Simple as that.

Man you people are missing the even simpler point.

And you're missing the most simplest point (try and one-up that, bitch. :p) which is that the issue isn't about fame or acknowledgement of his death. Its about Jobs being called a god damned Hero of Technology.

lol i don't even know what anyone's point is anymore :(

Meh, people will always be attracted and attached to the one who brings the news and shares a relationship with the public. I'm sure Dennis Ritchie's name will start to become more known since people are making an uproar about it over the internet which usually makes it's way onto T.V. news anyway.

The only reason the "mourning public" is upset about Steve Jobs death is because they don't know that it won't affect their chance of getting new apple technology, namely the iPhoneX and the iPadX.

There... I said it. Throw stones!

Are people actually like "meh?" Like, they actually heard about his contribution to computing and all, and still turned their noses up? I haven't seen this anywhere. Maybe the real problem is that you people use Facebook and have terrible friends. :v

Stupidity isn't synonymous with ignorance. If they didn't know, and had no reason to know about him, that doesn't make them less intelligent, it just means they weren't exposed to that knowledge. Here's a thing: I'd only heard of him in passing before I spotted this article and read about him. I knew some scant details and could recognise his face, but if you'd have asked me a week ago what I thought of Dennis Ritchie I probably would have shrugged my shoulders. Does that make me dumb? No, it just means I'm not as immersed in the world of computing as others.

Anyway, I kind of get where you guys are coming from, I just feel like the two figures are different enough that this disparity isn't really surprising or particularly discouraging.

The news organizations must have heard about it and gone "meh" to it. The only person I've talked to about this was my sister who basically said "meh." But to be fair, she didn't care about Jobs either, and she's also 16 so she's pretty much the most apathetic creature currently roaming this planet.

Since when has not knowing stuff NOT mean't less intelligent? Children are stupid, for instance. But yeah, its not like its their fault because they havent learnt much yet. Just like how you were dumb for not knowin' 'bout Ritchie, but now you're not!

Anyways, yeah I'm mostly still just pissed that Job's is considered a hero by so many people.

Even if you define intelligence as the total sum of your knowledge, missing out on one particular fact doesn't give you enough information to make a judgement of someone's total intellect.

You clearly haven't learned that its enough for me to make a judgment, and therefore you're an idiot.

But you weren't the one making the judgement also your dog looks bald without the hat just sayin'.

Now it looks like he's wearing a Jewish Cap.

Good thing we were able to have a Dennis Ritchie thread where people didn't get sidetracked talking about Steve Jobs.

Also I'm late to the game. return 0; close curly-brace, cat life | grep meaning, etc.
