Hey folks at HL2.net.

I have this question, that's been bugging me for a while.
The creepy melody in AntiCitizen One, that comes from an unplugged TV. A picture of G-Man standing in a boat with a crow on his shoulder is shown on the TV screen, and as soon as you look at the TV, G-Man fixes his tie, and then the TV turns off, the melody stops too.

Does that creepy melody have anything to do with G-Man, maybe Borealis too? G-Man is standing in a boat, which could be some kind of symbolic reference to Borealis. The crow is probably just some kind of joke by Valve

Anyways, what's your theory about that?

And also a link to that creepy melody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFeK9PwgjtI

I don't think any of the music has any relevance other than ambiance. The music in the games is just for the benefit of the player, it's not like Gordon is going around with an iPod and playing Vortal Combat whenever he thinks it would suit the fight.

There should be a 'ambient music selection system... online' bit to the HEV startup sequence.

It's a genuinely interesting blip in the game, but not one that's easy to generate a lot of discussion on... the people in the youtube comments are giving it a go though. Some people are hearing things in the backwards versions. I didn't know insane asylums had internet access.

ríomhaire, stating the obvious since '04

When interacting with the rebels during Anti-Citizen 1, a rebel(I only recall the female ones doing this) says "I can't get this tune out of my head" and she continues to hum that very same tune.
Eerie stuff...

It's either related some how, possibly to do with HL2:3. Or it's VALVe, trolling yet again.

Those guys are ****ing hilarious :)

...which raises the question - how many answers to hl2 mysteries are still in front of our noses ?

LandStander: Never noticed that before, nice one!

Bar x5: Agreed, I still think that when we finally get to the end credits of Ep3 we'll go: "Now WHY didn't we think that, so obvious now!"...

:)

Thanks for that, I was just off to bed.

****ING CREEPY

Also, I never managed to find that unplugged TV set (well, I don't remember doing so) And now I have no desire to :S.

I just hope, like the OP and many others, that this sort of stuff gets explained in Episode 3 (by this stuff I mean stuff we noticed before but didn't think that much of it) - not only it will add so many brix to peoples underwear - it will give the HL2 storyline a twist I think it needs to have.

Could anyone tell me how to get the sound file? Where is it located in the half-life 2 directory? Would like to use it in my own map :)

Wasn't it established somewhere that G-Man has some connection to crows? Crows are in a lot of places in the game just like G-Man... and they always seem to be leaving whenever you show up... like they were just waiting to see you and moved on.

To extract the actual sound files from the game files, you'll have to use a .gcf editor to access the archives that contain the hidden game files.

I recommend using GCFScape.

After installing your editor, run it and use it to open 'source sounds.gcf' which should be located in your steamapps folder, then navigate to 'hl2/sound/music' within the gcf file and extract the music folder.

Hi all,

I'm inclined to believe the second half of the "creepy" tune is from a sample library CD. I have heard a lower-pitched version with a few more birds added to it that the german band Eisheilig used on a version of their website years ago.

I've uploaded a copy of the loop in what I'm guessing is closer to it's "original" format on my server here:

http://www.erased.uk.net/loop.mp3

So if anyone knows what sampler this one belongs on, please do share the name - I've been trying to track down the original for years :)

It's weird... don't remember this song at all from that scene or the credits, but I love it.

Also, Darkangel your sig is the best line from MGS2.

Erased, that link doesn't work for me, it could just be me though.

Erased. Thanks for the link. Can you possibly the find the original version?

Since Valve are known to use music ambience, backwarded music loops and as many strange noises as they could get in the digital libraries, this is just another example of it. You know G-Man was very popular in hl1, so they decided to continue with him (as they eventually did with Barney and Eli). Mystery makes fanbase, they probably said to themselves and you know what? It works. "Get boat, crow and some strange guy with suitcase together, and fans have something to chit-chat about for weeks."

*facepalm*

You are all now imagining G-Man on a boat.

Yeah, there's a lot of creepy ambiance in HL2. Thankfully, Valve knows how to use it to good effect. Especially when you emerge from the pipe in the original game to the vast canyon, and the extended version of the Valve theme plays. That was so cool, but it would have been to even greater effect if there weren't even any enemies there.
