Critical hits are determined by momentum. The more times you hit an enemy, it adds up to critical hits. Exactly how many times you have to hit something I don't know.
I got like 10 critical hits in a row with a friggin flame thrower.
Wonder if the crits were from the over-time fire (small dmg) and not direct hits from your flamethrower.
What pisses me off is the fact that a soldier can one-hit kill you with a non-crit rocket. :/
and give crits to the ones with a death streak? reward sucking..? hmmm
On the contrary. Agressive playing is rushing an enemy when you know you can only take 1 hit and barely survive. Crits punish gutsy play like this. They turn Poker into Snap.I like crits. They're a good reward for aggressive playing

They may be unfair at times, but more often than not they reward skilled play - after all, you have to hit the enemy to get a crit, and the more you're hitting them the more you get.
interesting question how the crits are calculated.
any of the programmers here?
any real reliable information?
I'm surprised how many posters here think they've figured it out and know how it works.
IMO totally random, sometimes a few in a row, sometimes right at the begin at the level.(soldier)
annoying if the same noob guy kills you again and again just with criticals.
I could well live without...
cheers

...spamming fire (and not just the pyro) is all it takes to hit an enemy.
I'll think I'm doing pretty good, you know - defending the point, then bam, the new guy on the server comes in with 2 critical rockets in a row and wipes out the entire defense.
And?
Am I the only one that isn't bothered with a couple crits completely wiping out a capture? Am I the only one that just shrugs it off and looks forward to rushing that point again to see if I can take it? This isn't some uber competitive game, guys. You need to get that out of your head. This isn't CS:S. Your K/S ratio doesn't matter. No one cares that you have some great ratio as it really doesn't help the team in the grand scale. No one person is going to capture all of the points by themselves. It's a team effort. The lead person on your team might have no kills whatsoever... but that medic is doing a damn fine job healing that solider that wiped through three opposing players.
