Looks like two X850XT in crossfire was all around beat by a single 7800GTX:

Even going with a best-case scenario where an XPRESS 200 CrossFire motherboard would cost you about $100, you’d still need to buy the second RADEON X800 XL card for another $300, setting you back $400 total. As an alternative, for $400 you could instead invest in a GeForce 7800 GT, which would give good performance, plus the ability to play at widescreen and super hi-res resolutions such as 2048x1536.

That’s right, the rumors you’ve been hearing about CrossFire being limited to 1600x1200 max resolution at a headache-inducing 60Hz are unfortunately true. How ATI’s engineers could have overlooked this limitation when developing CrossFire – a product which doesn’t really shine until you crank up the screen resolutions – is pretty baffling. To add insult to injury, we couldn’t get DOOM 3’s timedemo mode to work properly with CrossFire.

Looks like teh x850xtpe crossfire is up there with the same generation Sli configurations from nvidia. Not too bad performance really, but it really did seem to suffer in F.E.A.R. Didn't read the final thoughts, thats just based on the benchmark results.

Looks disappointing with those cards. However the one thing we can't measure is how it will perform in the future.. with gfx cards that aren't even out yet. With dual X1800s for example... or future cards we don't even know about..

Well, considering that the X800 outperformed the 6800 Ultra in most benchmarks, I think that Crossfire will do well for ATI.
The only downside I see right now is that you must have a "Crossfire" labelled card to work with the master/slave configuration. Once ATI fixes that it should be good to go.

Well it did pwn SLI in Half Life 2, which is Direct 3d. Since Microsoft is planning on killing off OpenGL (where Nvidia beats ATI) with the new Windows Vista, ATi might just be positioned perfectly going forward from Vista's release... Also seems interesting they are releasing Crossfire in December, right around the time when Vista is being released too. The countdown on the ATi website is for the X1800, not Crossfire, as many people believe.

BTW I drive a Chrysler Crossfire so maybe a Crossfire MB is in my future too, haha!:p

Look just because IN THE BETA 1 OPEN GL SUPPORT WAS DONE BY WRAPPING IT AROUND DX DOSN'T MEAN THAT WONT CHANGE IN THE FINAL.
God!
And Anyway thats just for AeroGlass(3D Desktop) it means alot less for game.s

i think its a load of bull. i mean u first have to buy the crossfire setup, idk if any of you read but just the crossfire setup costs more than $500 for a setup that works ONLY FOR 850 series, then you have to buy a master card and a slave card, all together comming out to more than $1000 for dual ati cards. And that setup ONLY works for 850 series, meaning you will have to buy a different setup if u want to upgrade to more powerful dual cards. i bought my whole system for less than a crossfire setup would cost, and according to those benchmarks my system beats crossfire.

Read one of those reviews out there (tech report or hardocp...forget) and Need for Speed game performance was really good.
For the X800 crossfire cards, I wouldn't buy but it gives a nice glimps to at least what the new cards will be able to pull off (or more) compared to the Nvidia counter part.

Throwing in a single 7800GTX in there is a wake up call saying this is late! Although I await benchies this Oct. for the new ATI cards and in crossfire. Potential is there.

People were bitching when SLI was released too. The bitching will never stop:|
