I've just played through Half-Life, H-L: Opposing Force and H-L: Blue Shift - all in about 1 - 2 weeks (no comments about the difficulty ;)

Anyway, the crosshair really bugged me during the entire games - in ALL three titles. During 80% of the games the crosshair wasn't even noticeable - only in very dark areas. I know that aiming without the crosshair could be practiced but it's not that easy when Mr. Gordon and the other two of 'em doesn't hold their weapons still during non-shootings.

Anyone know if there's gonna be a change with the crosshair in H-L 2 (maybe an ability to change the color, size or model of the crosshair) ? I'd really hate for such a little thing to ruin the feelin' of the gameplay. (Just my tiny concern.)

Crosshair in HL2 looks pretty sweet: health and ammo indicators right on it.

i don't know about if there will be changes in HL2 as far as crossheirs go.. but for those that own CZ, they can go into options and change the size and the colour of the crossheirs.

with that in mind, i think they would do something similar, if not better for HL2.

It looks like the same one is gonna be through the whole game, and they might have options, but It is so awesome with the indicators on the side. I wouldnt want to change it.

I had emailed this to Rick a while ago. He said we can toggle the helth/ammo crosshair on and off. We can use the normal one, like the one shown in this year's vid or the ammo/health one shown in last year's vids.

Increase contrast to see the crosshair in the light.....

I think the indicators are just a distraction and don't look all that great. I hope I can switch it off.

Edit: just ready Lan's post. nevermind

I like UT2004's selection of crosshairs. They KNOW what it can do to disrupt you. It's more of a library of crosshairs then a selection!

I still await a game that lets you import your own crosshair design.

Um, you can in HL1. Just put in a different sprite.

yeah but then pple complain about cheating and such.. by editing game data.. like the script kiddies who have scripts for just about everything in some mods including one to go take a dump :|

i hope game devs take into consideration small things like crossheirs and give the gamers lots of options so it doesn't come down to the script kiddie way...

yeah they took out the ammo and health indicator, I thought it was a wicked idea, ingenius... Valve must've had one of those infamous "Design Decisions" again...*sigh*

They didn't take it out.

If you read the email reply he (can't remeber who) says that it was disabled for the clips.

Its still in there, don't worry.

Hopefully HL2 will have enough, or even more, customizable crosshairs as Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne; a handful of varieties.

But in regards to BlackMesaDude's post, playing without a crosshair is challenging and a lot more realistice and somewhat eliminates distraction, but it also is a lot more difficult.

Really?? That's awesome then!

Hmmm... *Trying to remember if I've ever seen it...*
Could anyone point me to a screenie with this crosshair active ?
Is this crosshair active in the latest huge E3k4 video ? (If so, I just haven't noticed it - probably been too blown away by the graphics and gameplay  ) Sounds really neat though !

playing without crosshair is more fun

Yeah, believe me - the experience has been like that throughout the entire game even though I've had it activated. (If that stupid (sorry) Gordon didn't have to move his weapons around so much when not firing, it would be easier to use the tip of the rifles/guns etc. to aim.)

And it's not like the most easiest thing to manually estimate where the exact center is on a 21" monitor either. If so, I'd have to go buy one of those handheld 3" TVs and try to connect it to my G-Card - but I guess that it wouldn't feel the same to play the game any longer. :P

And as far as for exchanging the sprite for the crosshair goes - I'm not at all into modding. I'm just happy if I can manage to mod a diskette (by putting the label on it the right way).

The default crosshairs for HL etc were pretty blah. I made my own ones that were much more visible (orange and red toned) though.

I'm not sure I really like the idea of the health and ammo indicator on the crosshair. I dunno, maybe it'll grow on me.

if you think half-life is easy, play it at expert, i expect you should change your mind fast, and to the guy who wishes for a game with customizable crosshairs, welcome to starsiege tribes in 99, 5 years ago.

I got to the 2nd level, is it Office Complex? On hard mode before I just couldn't be bothered - the game was the same, it was just more frustrating (slaves took 3(!) shotgun hits to kill instead of 1) taking longer to kill things and such.

I prefer difficultly levels to alter the number and skill of the enemies, rather than their HP. It not only screws up your reflexes, but it's also just plain not as fun to have to shoot enemies over and over just because they have tons of HP.

Right, that's what I thought. They also seemed to do like 3x the damage, and you got 10 energy from a battery instead of 15. But all that means is that you have to reload more often because you didn't have a 100% perfect run through some area of the game and got hit too much.

That's not hard, it's boring.

Imo, the x-hair's are pretty good, except for the for the Magnum and rpg.

Btw, have you noticed the x-hair in HL2 changes colour when the background colour is the same :)

crosshairLINK

It flashes red when your low on ammo, a nice hint I think.

If I am not mistaken, if you look closely in the Strider BINK, you can see for a split second that when the crosshair moves across the Strider's leg, it shows the health bar. I think you have to shoot it's legs, not pod. :D Anyone care to check for themselves?

Great, thanks ! With those two other indicators 'round the x-hairs, there shouldn't be a problem knowing where you're aiming. If you turn 'em off however, then those five VERY tiny dots could be a pain to find in bright areas and against firery/flashy backgrounds.

BUT, if it changes color pending on what background you have, then it might be another story. I'll have to check the vids again...

It's already visible at the start, just hard to see. I think that might be because of the player having full health and ammo. The second he starts to fire, the ammo indicater drops and it becomes full bright again.

yeah i hope that the crosshairs are improved. whenever i played the original hl i had to take a marker and highlight the magnum's crosshairs on account of not being able to see it half the time

Maybe I've always had my monitor or graphics card set up weird, or something like that, but I've never had any trouble with crosshair visibility...

It doesn't show the enemies health, does it? If not, then I am totally wrong. :D

I think one side shows Gordon's health, and the other shows the ammo remaining in the current clip... What does everyone else think?

Yeah thats correct Brain.

Its just a helpful reminder for yourself so you don't have to take your eyes away from the action.
The ability to gauge an enemys health like that just isn't hl.
