Ive been reading around that you can get DX10(ish) very high settings on Crysis when in XP after changing some lines in cfg files?

Is this ONLY for the demo or has anyone done it with the retail version?

Ive just got myself an 8800GT, which runs flawlessly on XP High settings (DX9 basically), and i wanted to push it to its limit with DX10...and i dont want Vista as Vista is a nightmare from what ive read.

It works in retail AFAIK, but back up any files that you decide to tweak.

If you tweak the configuration files in \CVarGroups\ by copying and pasting the "very high" settings (1st paragraph) IN PLACE of the "high" settings (last paragraph) the game will load the highest possible settings even though the drop-down menus display "high."

Yup, works in retail version of the game. As the above poster says, back up the config files that you are going to change before you change them, that way you can always return to normal settings if it all goes pear shaped !!

The following guide should be of some use:

I found it particularly useful when i was messing around with the config in the demo. Enjoy the new card !!

Is there some way to use DX9 on very high settings for Vista? I don't need/don't want DX10. I want to use that tweak on Vista, you know?

Nah, it still has plenty of issues with drivers, compatibility, and instability.

I've been running Vista for 6+ months with absolutely no problems, as have several of my coworkers. All of us use it for our workstations at work (9-10+ hours a day), as well as at home. Don't believe everything you read on the internets.
