With Crysis set for an early 2007 release, mod teams are already developing some exciting modifications for the game – many of which will be released on, or shortly after the games official release. While Crytek will be releasing tools to the general public (after the release of Crysis) to make the development of modifications relatively straight-forward, modifications are being developed now that have the backing of Crytek for development support and access to a pre-software development kit.

2 mods currently in development:

Obsidian Edge II: Theatre of War

Obsidian Edge II: Theatre of War will again focus heavily on stealth and tactics. The player will be required to lead assaults on enemy held positions, seek out and eliminate hostiles, perform coordinated missions, and fight for their own survival. The mod will be focused around a squad-based experience

Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre

Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre will offer players tense team based jungle fighting while being attacked from above. Some of the highlights planned include exhilarating fighter plane dogfights, parachuting out of carriers, an innovative health system. “We are also going on the extreme route of providing no HUD for the player, which is a challenge for us, the creators, to make it both more immersive yet still practical”.

Kevin also tells us that while various gameplay modes may be supported in future releases, the first release will focus on the 3-stage round system.

Man! Those lucky dogs! I would love to have a crack at the new CryEngine2 sandbox! Making my own tropical paradise was one of the best things about Far Cry.

The mods sound okay I guess, but more details and screens would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully there will be more and varied community support for this one....

Another big ass reason why Crytek suck ass. The first mod to announce gets the SDK to work with. Wow, that really sounds fair! You either give it to all of them or not at all.

And how many of the mods announced for HL2 (and other games for that matter) before it was released have seen the light of day?

Any idiot can announce a mod and release renders. It means nothing anymore.

Read the post.

The company gave these teams access to the SDK.

Maybe they payed for it?

CryTek could've been like Valve and just teased everyone for 2 years.

Sounds like all the hype I heard on halflife radio.

They had people interviewed about the mod they were 'making' for halflife2 before it was released, have I read anything about them since? No.

They've been given access to a "pre-software development kit". They'll be able to make textures, models and animations but not modify game content, cause there's no game or content to modify right now.

I'll wait to see the quality of these mods before I make a final judgement on whether or not it was a wise decision.

Can't you do all those things in 3d aps, and if you can't and need that to do it or to make it easier. Why isn't this released to the public, I mean they are not giving out content, no source code. No one will be any wiser about the game from it, it will just make it easier for mod teams.

I did read it. If they get an SDK, they're getting extra goodies. It's possible even an early build of Crysis.

That has nothing at all to do with it. At least one mod team didn't have the advantage over another, the principle is wrong. Simple.

It's annoying when someone tells you to do something you've already done, isn't it?

Last time I checked, development houses weren't in the habit of handing out alpha code to Joe Nobody just because he said he liked the look of their game and wanted to make a mod.

I wouldn't say it is morally, or legally, wrong. It is THEIR modding tools, they have the authority to distribution said tools to whomever they want, or don't want. It may be that their decision-making abilities are flawed, but it is still THEIR tools. End of subject.

You really have an open mind dont you?

I don't understand what the big deal is. Alright, so the mods sound boring as hell. What we're seeing here is the first step in mod team/developer realtions. Eventually, mod teams will be getting the SDKs a lot earlier, even before the game is completed. Hell, developers might even send some of their own people to work with the mod if its good enough and do like Valve is with buying it and selling it via steam-like program or in actual stores.

That's how I see it anyways.

How are you guys saying for sure that Crytek is just handing this stuff out to joe nobody. These mod teams (or some of the members) may have close relations with Crytek from a previous venture, or have had previous relations with them. Crytek probably didn't just hand out the SDK because they were the first mods announced. Infact I'm sure thats true, because how are people going to announce mods for a game that has just been recently revealed to the public. Obviously they have been in contact with Crytek for quite some time.

Wasn't Obsidian Edge one of Far Cry's biggest mods? Not that i really know anyone who plays it, but then again, beyond Garry's Mod and Desert Combat there really hasn't been any mod for any game that has made gamers everywhere stand up and take notice of it.
