Crytek announces CryEngine 3 D:

I just hope they use it for somthing other than just more Crysis.

That is CryEngine 2.5, surely. I doubt they've created an entire new engine. :upstare:

Could be the bitrate of the video, but it appears to look nowhere as good as Crysis did tbh.
Agreed, if you notice the vid uses an identical level from Crysis, the first island level, if you check you see the draw distance seems worse, as does the LOD system, in CE3, my guess is they removed/reduced a bunch of features to make it more suitable for consoles, so in reality maybe it should be called CryEngine 2: Console Edition rather than CryEngine 3.

New engine announcements are so boring nowadays. They're never as big leaps forward as we've seen in the past. We're at a point where we can already create objects/characters that look physically the correct shape etc.

More impressive would be AI that's actually good. The problem with AI is that it doesn't get any easier to achieve as CPU/GPU's get better. One guy sitting at a desk is never going to be able to code decent human behaviour no matter how fast his comp is.

Same old shit, but slightly prettier.

Some of you guys sound like you know exactly what they have changed. I for one have no idea what they have done under the hood so to speak.

It could be that they have almost entirely reworked the rendering code, done a crap load on making the AI a lot better, etc. Can clearly see they have improved animation blending. If it's a complete code rework in most areas, it may warrant the CryEngine 3 title.

CryEngine 3 probably more like Cryengine 2.5 but marketing it as 3 is easier. Besides they can call it whatever version they like. I think multi platform more than warrants the version 3 name anyway.

Where did you get the idea they'd need to make a new engine for a higher version number? If anything a new engine would be called something else entirely.

The thing is, CryEngine 2 was stated to be multiplatform both before and after release, so that's nothing 'new', I guess CE3 is simply MORE geared towards consoles than CE2.

It's very, very clear that CE3 is a console version of the engine. Anyone saying anything else is just being... silly.

What the f is this ? I was thinking something more of photo realistic dolls

Next Crytek game:
Crykey!
Play an Austrailian wildlife TV show host who get's caught up by evil poachers who have created mutated kangaroos and koalas in order to hunt better sport.

It doesn't look all that different really. Biggest difference I noticed was the physics when he shot that tree.

I did lol'eth, good sir. Indubitably well played, if I do say so myself.

Call me crazy, but I thought that it actually looked worse than Cryengine 2...

I'm betting on this being the stripped down console version.

Graphically it is clearly worse than CryEngine 2, or at least the settings in that vid are, especially the draw distance, there are photo and video comparisons out there of the same island level running on CE3 and on CE2 and it clearly looks a lot better on CE2, better drawdistance and LOD. Textures are more blurry in the CE3 screens than CE2 also.

My guess?

Perhaps what we saw was actually CE3 running on a console devkit? I dunno.

I just looked at that first level of Crysis on my PC to compare, it doesn't look very good at all in that video. For one thing everything on the other side of the lagoon other than terrain isn't even being rendered, and the mountain looks awful in comparison. It's hard to tell with that crappy video, but the lighting and textures didn't look so great either. The worst part is that the framerate seemed better on mine. What is CryEngine 3 exactly, anyway? It certainly doesn't look like an upgrade.

The main difference is that they have the engine running on the consoles as well, and it's supposedly a hell of a lot more optimized than cryengine 2 (more optimized than the version used in crysis wars).

It may not visually be a whole lot different (though I'm sure there's more graphical goodies for those on the PC side), but it has some under the hood changes that are sure to benefit us gamers indirectly.
