CS 1.6 Ads: Now Screening

Am I the only one that thinks it's disgraceful that Valve have sold a game to us without advertising and are now telling us that from one day forward this game we paid for will include adverts!!!??

That's like buying a film and then finding out 2 years down the line that when you fire it up in your DVD player there's a commercial break halfway through!

I guarantee you Valve's got it covered in their Terms and Agreements thingy that you click 'yes I do agree' before installing their games.

You won't ever get ads that fit in perfectly, that are not obtrusive because the point of ads is to stand out, to get your attention. So forget about it.
The only ads that I do not mind are the ones in the score board, they stand out but don't **** the game up for me.

why not just have a background image when you load CS. Dynamic splash screens would be fine - instead of the image of the guys with shotties for 90% of people who don't use gui's. No one cares about that, yet you would still read the daily advert when you load CS.

What they are doing now, is creating a conditional response with the advert, linking it to annoyance. Which won't sell the product - if however they designed some good automated splash screens people would be more interested.

Also it gives them between 640x480 to 1600x1280 of a resolution - rather than the small ~64x64 ingame ads.

I'm guessing I'm the only one who's not blowing this out of proportions. It's something on the wall for christs sake. It WON'T hinder the game at all, whether you want to argue about it or not is completely different. You people need to get off your high horse. "OH NO AN ADVERTISEMENT!! WOE IS MEEEEE!" Shit. It costs you nothing, it doesn't stop your game, what are you pissing about? is it going to waste your bandwidth on the server you rent? NO? oh, well then stfu.

They should really pull these banners out of the game - only the scoreboard ad look "good". I'd rather see ad in the menu, the loading screen, than during the game. By the way, does it really make point? I mean -- an advertisement has to make people want to buy something, right? I don't think it works here -- I'd rather get annoyed at this product whose big out-of-place ad is disturbing me when I try to kill some Ts. I don't have nothing against creative use of product placement, though (good example in SC)...

How discrete.

Why are there ads in this game?

Didn't I already pay for it?

If there were ads in this game at the time that I bought it, I wouldn't have payed nearly as much as I did.

I want my money back.

Now I am scared for the future.
Hardware manufactures adding commericals into your dvd players and such. Your just watching a movie, *Boom* Commericals.

Err...

CS is an ultra realistic game simulation of real life. There should not be ads distracting the participants in such an intense tactile simulation or anti terrorism squad based combat using real world weapons that kill people in only a few shots and only one shot if you shoot the person in the head.

Wouldn't this make CS adware?

I don't think Valve has anything in their agreement about that.

Anyhow, it truly does ruin the experience in an almost unexplainable way. I play the game to get away from the world and want to know nothing of corporations when I play it.

Bad idea. In fact, THIS is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard from Valve. Valve turned into the big, green corporation machine. Our eyes have decieved us.

I think you're overreacting. It's one game. They could've put the ads in CS:S, HL2dm, or, for that matter, HL2 itself. Molehill < mountain.

Exactly why we should make our displeasure as vocal as possible. So that it stops at the molehill...

I wouldn't play or buy a game with those kinds of ads in it. I don't even buy DVDs if I know they have a bunch of trailers that play when you boot it up. I don't mind ads on TV, but when you pay good money for a product you deserve to get the full product, not have to keep paying for it with constant ad exposure. I wouldn't go around bitching about stuff like this, I would just not buy any Valve products that have this "feature". Hopefully more people feel the same way and this trend will get killed before it gets off the ground.

CS 1.6 is just used to test the viability of the ads, I'm sure they will implement them into present or future games. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if TF2 ships with ads built in, what a sad day that will be if the ads are like the ones shown here :/

That day will be the day when Valve is revealed to actually be "Lucifer's Devil Company Inc.".

Imagine this in HL2...

"Yes. I am talking to you, the so-called 'One Free Man'...

BLACK GAME BOX NOW ONLY 3$.99

...look at what you are throwing away! Is... it... worth... it?"

Yeah I died laughing here

This is an outrage. I recommend EVERYONE to write an email to Gabe and tell him your opinion.

Here is what i wrote
I have been playing your games since 1999 and I'm a loyal gamer, but the recent news about putting ads in 1.6 has really offended me.

I thought Valve was a mature company focusing on the loyal gaming community's needs and wants, not on your own view of how fast and easy you can make monkey. I think you are taking advantage of the classic gamers that have so proudly supported you. Now, the 1.6 community will be appalled by this because you are selling them out while they play a game they actually payed for.

I really do believe this is a HORRIBLE step in the wrong direction and you should reconsider immediately before your reputation gets dulled. Like i said before, I have been a loyal fan for 8 years, the thought of even putting ads in one of the games that has made your reputation and brought so much attention to Valve(that and half-life) has really made me reconsider buying your games. Now, I'm starting to wonder if there are any other gaming companies out there that are actually loyal.

I guess its been 8 years and the shining gaming producers come and go and I'm afraid that you will be the one to go.

Please continue to support your old gamers, the loyal gaming community, and remove the freaking ads.

Sincerely,

Adam Obenhofer

You're right, they just chose the one with the most players guaranteed to be playing at any one time. :|

I'm also whining now. I told Gabe that if the ads are going to be also in Ep2 and TF2 I will tell my friends to boycott them, and now I'm telling everybody that don't buy CS if you don't own it.

Lets start somekinda adress to net that people would stop buying Steam games and else if they do this shit.

You know what. This really makes me think, how much money has Valve lost due to CS over the years?

These ads might be annoying .... but are they are really any worse than peoples "tags" that get sprayed all over the place? I agree that the game shouldnt really be altered once its released, but how many times has game changed since it was released at version 1.0? Compared to 1.6, the original release was practically a different game.

Can any of you european guys actually see the ads in the beta? I can't. Is it possible that Europe doesn't get them (as is the case in bf2142) or is it just me that does something wrong?

.bog.

While the ads themselves may or may not be annoying, the main issue is a matter of principle. We pay for a game & then intrusive advertismetns are added in after? I refused to buy the new BF 2142 because of the ads.
I'm sure we'll be seeing de_dust_adfree.bsp soon enough.
That's my first thought.

"Whoo team down."
Save on your car insurance.
"WTF?"

Ads don't fit no matter how hard you try. BF2142 is a good case becuase they tried current ads in a futuristic environment, that made no sense. Same goes for Dust. Bad ads in the wrong environment.

Besides immersion just gets blown out of the water.

Given that a good part of the CS settings are not in the US it would be viable to say that the ads don't fit by that principle alone. (Given that the ads are only for people in the USA.)

fI wouldn't mind advertising in games if we actually got any sufficient benefit from it. It would be great if we got ?10 off the retail price via some form of credit/voucher by accepting to see adverts in our games.

That's the key point really, we should have a choice. Much in the same way that Google Toolbar seems to be bundled with so many programs these days - at least we have a choice not to install it.

And I completely agree with an earlier post about Valve's appalling record of delivering products that people really want on time; whilst by the same token they are dishing out crappy updates and add-ins to their current games that nobody wants right on schedule.

Someone said that these aren't more bad as sprays, but they are. The damn ads are in every server in same place, and they are too big and all. And that wall that has the Gamehelper Ad is now really fugly when somekind of Ep2 poster IS ALSO IN THE WALL.

The ads should be like the Saddam thing in CS:S Dust2, blended to wall. But these are big white boxes in places you would not expect to see something like this.

I don't mind advertising if it's more inconspicuous or at the very least it LOOKS like it's meant to be there in an in-game context, never mind WHY exactly Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists are duking it out in an enclosed, small not-even city.

You're right, they just chose the one with the most players guaranteed to be playing at any one time. :|
...which means that the more recent, relatively less played ones, are safe. How many people who're complaining about this actually play 1.6? Some, sure, but I really doubt all.

I take it as a beta of the ad period both to CS1.6 and to the wider Source Network. It's possible...

Another thing there... how on earth is this going to be implemented for games with actual mapping communities (e.g. not 1.6)? A significant part - depending on the game, even a majority - of Source-based servers nowadays run custom maps. Unless Valve does something ludicrously technical - going through all the BSP surfaces in the map to determine visibility and ideal texture positioning - or draconian - preventing maps without, say, a minimum number of "info_ad" entities from being hosted at all -, there's no way it would work.

I have a problem with being forced to see advertisements on a game I've already paid for.

Edit: My GOD my sig is out of date.

You paid for CS 1.6? Wierd... Mine was free - only cost was Half-life 1, which i bought in one of them platinum game boxes for almost no price at all.
