It's been a long time coming since the conclusion of "Operation Breakout" back in October, but the next big CS:GO update has finally arrived in the form of "Operation Vanguard", although it unfortunately has nothing to do with that big purple shield from Dota...
Like the three operations that came before it, Vanguard is offering a variety of high-quality, community-made maps on official, low-latency Valve servers. Like Operation Phoenix, the included maps are playable by anyone who owns CS:GO, and the All Access Pass available for £3.59 / $5.99 is only required if you want to access the variety of other features available as part of Vanguard, which we'll get to in a minute.
The six available Vanguard maps include:
While the Operation Journal is returning, it has been massively overhauled since Phoenix. The virtual book now features entire "Campaigns" worth of missions which must be completed in a set order to upgrade the included Operation Challenge Coin, which, like previous Operations, can be shown off on a player's profile for bragging rights. The Competitive Scorecard and Friend Leaderboards are also returning from Operation Phoenix alongside the standard Operation Case, which includes 14 of the top-rated community-created weapon finishes.
If purchasing virtual books and coins isn't your thing and you'd rather stick to the more casual Arms Race mode, then good news, as the Arms Race gamemode has also been updated. The mode now features three extra maps previously restricted to the Demolition gamemode, and it also boasts several new rules, such as needing to kill the enemy team leader to advance, and pseudo-randomising the weapon list every match. A newly introduced smaller variant of the classic Dust, known as "de_shortdust", has also been added to Demolition mode.
Operation Vanguard is definitely one of the biggest community-based updates yet and there's definitely something for every kind of CS:GO fan, even if it does mark the end of this year's Halloween festivities. Operation Vanguard is set to ruin through until February 10th 2015, so be sure to check out the update changelog and announcement post to find out more and get stuck in!
The six available Vanguard maps include:
- Backalley - Urban back alleys and loading docks host the close-quarters combat of a daring hostage rescue.
- Bazaar - A middle eastern shopping district is transformed into a battle ground when targeted in a bomb plot.
- Facade - Criminals raid Allied Distribution in an attempt to destroy critical evidence before the Counter-Terrorist reaction.
- Marquis - The streets and metro of urban France are targeted by an Anarchist plot in this fast-paced defuse scenario.
- Season - Season Corporation, a Japanese bio-research facility, has its white walls painted red by a Phoenix demolition plot.
- Workout - A pristine sports complex becomes the site of an intense hostage rescue mission.
