CS:S doesn't like refresh rate over 85?

ever since i got my new monitor (mitsubishi 930sb), i can't run at any resolution besides 1600x1200, or i get a memory error. now before with my old monitor, i could run CS:S at 1280x960, and 1600x1200, switching to 1024x768 would indefinately give a memory error.

the difference was, i could only run 1280x960@85hz, 1024x768 would be at 100hz. so now with the new monitor, im running 1600x1200@85hz and 1280x960@100hz. which leads me to believe CS:S doesn't like hz more than 85. ive tried different drivers, and still the same. currently using 4.10's.

now you wouldn't experience this unless you did a refresh rate fix to run optimal refresh rates. anyone else experienced this?

I wouldn't knnow, but those must be unpleasant fps your getting at that resolution..

with an x800xt, he should be doing just fine. and sorry, i really dont know what might be the problem. do you only get the memory error after playing for a short time, or is it immediate?

if 80fps is unpleasant, than yea its unpleasant as hell!

anyway, the problem is easily reproducible, i already submitted a bug report. right when i switch to any res other than 1600x1200, it gives the memory error.

UPDATE:

i manually forced 1280x1024 to force to 85hz instead of 100hz with refresh force. sure enough, it let me switch to that resolution without crashing with memory error. so its definately confirmed that CS:S is ok with 85hz, but 100hz+ gives a memory error.

I have almost the same problem. I can't use 800x600 or 640x480 for some reason, it gives me the same memory error. 640 and 800 (both at 120hz) don't seem to work, but 1024x768 at 100hz and all the higher resolutions seem to work (lower refreshrate obviously). I noticed though that if I change my windows resolution to 800x600, then 640/800 both work in CS:S as well. Maybe it has something to do with the windows refreshrate vs the CS:S one? I should probably use refreshforce and force 800x600 and 640x480 to 100hz also, and then see if it works. I'll see what happens later today, now I have to go to the uni.

i hope you right
do you use ati tray tools or another prog to force it ?

i use refreshforce because its always worked. well it still works, its just CS:S is the only game to give me grief.

stop using refresh force its crap

use ati tray tools and use force game resolution
refresh force uses a much diferent way
also new ccc has a way to force 100hz ingame

well, its never been crap before. ati tray tools. ok ill try that. CCC is bloated though, i refuse to use that :dork:

I think I know the problem now. I forced my 640 and 800 to 100hz (as 120hz gave me the error) and it worked just fine, no problems. My windows resolution is 1024x768 at 100hz, so it seems like CS:S doesn't like a bigger refreshrate than the one you use in windows. Poseyjmac, is your windows resolution something that has 85hz?

Btw xp-m 2400+ and 9500pro here.

SUCCESS

well my windows and game hz were the same, but a few mins ago i just undid what refreshforce did and installed ATI tray tools. i did the force refresh in that, and now CS:S doesn't crash when i switch to any resolution no matter the hz level. so it was refreshforce that was being the problem!

thx for recommending this, i recommend this program to anyone who has an ati card, many options including overclocking profiles, and all in one prog.
