css fy_diner [beta] - 60's donut diner

Hi, here's my fy map thats almost finished, needs play testing and hopefully limited weapons if/when they fixed the weapon entity becoming obsolete.

map size: small
maxplayers: probably about 12 players is best due to map size
map intentions: Short & sweet themed FUN map with physics play (death by donut!)
weapons: had to put buyzone (hopefully temp) due to weapon entity issues.

What do you think? If anyone is kind enought to host it temporarly then tell me.

It looks damn good - It's tricky to make buildings look good like that.
 
It looks ok, but the whole thing is just a bit bright...its a night-time map and granted there are some lights on the buildings but the carpark is pretty well lit - could almost pass for daytime...Also the inside of the diner is pretty bright, which is ok, but shadows can look cool too..

Save your map under a diff name (incase you dont like what im about to say :) ) and try this:

1) Delete any lights outside that aren't attached to a building or lamppost or realistic light source

2) Make a light env somewhere outside with the colour set to the sort of colour you'd normally associate with moonlight (bluey silvery)

3) Make another light env which is just a few shades above black (dark grey)

4) Go inside the diner and make sure all the light is coming from the actual light fixtures, and turn the brightness of them down a bit, give it a moody shadowy feel without making it dark or anything.

5) 60's diner right? Neon signs, jukeboxs..red lights around the sign...that sorta thing :)

I'd be happy to fiddle with the VMF if you want to see what i mean but can't be bothered yourself...though of course if you're happy with it, good job and good luck to you :)
 
thx for the feedback. I did ups the levels of those jpgs as they look too dark compared to ingame but I think thats to do wth my gamma levels. Anyway re-did some of the lighting.

Anybody know how to create a neon effect, I tried applying a func_brush and changing it to glow but doesn't quite work. Need soft lighting round the edges.
 
whats up with the second pic?? Is the donut making the sparks?? by the way it looks pretty cool
 
Lighting looks better now, much more night-time-like :) Not sure about neon glows tbh

Must be in some slum neighborhood. ALL CUMTOMER'S CARS ARE ROBBED AND SMASHED :D

but the map looks great ;)
 
if you noticed the Donut has fallen off the top end of the building, obviously a phys object, looks really interesting :D

I'm really loving it so far keep up the great work
 
Looks very good. It would be cool if it were possible to crush the enemy with donut. You shoot on the donut and bam the poor guy below is crushed :naughty: (should but the donuts on the entrence to make it interesting). What about being able to go on the roof?
 
looks really nice, the inside is a bit bland though. if you go into diners and even McDonalds, the clour schemes are quite bright. try adding some tacky red vinyl on the benches and a splash more colour everywhere. also, inside, i think itd be cool to have a lot of props around, so when the bullets start flying, so do empty boxes and half eaten burgers :p
 
point taken about the colour blandness inside, will redo that. There's quite a few props inside, maybe I need to put a few obvious one like a hanging basket of fruit, I need to test whether there will be massive lag if some1 chucks a grenade. (all depends if the buyzone is in the final map)

I need to optimise the map abit more cos the map is so small the engine draws everything. I don't want to spoil the surprise at what "happens" in the map, lets just say it should be funny.

At the moment u can spawn weapons with limit ammo and they disappear after 2 secs, cos its suppose to be a fun map, I ask you 'buyzone or no buyzone?'
 
Put some frosting and some sprinkles on the doughnuts up top, if you can. That would be funny.

Hey, it looks very nice! Best map I've seen so far, and that's much better than any other fy_ :)

Lighting looks much better inside now, well done
 
Nice going... I'd create a more realistic interior though, with models and advertisements... 50's style of course :)
 
like the look of it well done - buyzone id say, more traditional cs style...also you have managed to limit the guns just by layout, doesnt look like snipers wil be happy.If you have a buyzone then people can use the guns they are accustomed to.
 
Looking nice on the outside, but the inside has an too much of an office feel rather than diner. Other than that, amazing.

EDIT: Just looked at newer pics and the inside is looking immeasurably better.

I'm new to this 'releasing maps to the public'. In the past only made HLDM for small LAN parties, so any advice is welcomed.

- map size: small
- recommended maxplayer: 10
(although there are 16 player spawn points)
- map intentions: Fun map with several interactions with physical objects
- buyzone: Yes

The lights inside still aren't from the "lights" so to say. My only crit.
 
i agree with whoever said "make the boots red" - makes it seem more in the era...Eddie Rockets should be an inspiration...

Looks good though as i said before...
 
I like the map, its awsome, the only thing is i get low fps in it, i just got a new 6600 gt, and i usually get like 60+, in there i get like 25+, but i love the map, with all the little cool things you can do.

Im looking forward, till when i can play with other people.

Looking good hicks! BTW, where did you get that skybox? is it a HL2 one? or a custom one?
 
Yeah performance is a slight issue, cos the map is so small AND the diner is open AND those donuts are triangle hungry, its draws alot. Used occuders which drops models when not in sight. Tried playing with 'hints' but they don't really work on this type of map.
Tell me if I'm wrong on this.

I was trying to keep interior simple until I posted screenshots here and I had the urge to make it look better from all the positive feedbacks. I may have to drop some detail and reduce the triangle count.

Had a quick 3 player test and it was more fun with just scout/shotty/tmp/mac/1 para weapons. So may get rid of buyzone and drop weapons. Small_Sumo, weapons still dissapear after 2 secs but if you put a bunch of weapons above player spawn points they should get them on time.

NoisyMonk that skybox is a HL2 one called sky_borealis01. The Stars I made myself using particles.

You tried the cars yet? :naughty:
 
Do you know of any servers with this map in the rotation?
I would put it up on my friends server, but his isn't up, and won;t be for a long time.

For the main sign, the doughnut looks a bit square, there's an option either in Hammer or in the compile settings to smooth edges (or there was for HL) to make round objects...look round. Sorry to be vague but I have no PC here so I can't check it.
 
go over it to improve performance. Something is telling me you used alot of brushwork where you could have used models. the donuts for example really should be models and not brushwork.

did you use alot of func_details as well? they can increase performance as well.
I'd go through the SDK example maps again, as well as read up on the Hammer guide for increasing performance. :)
