Had the same problem that it seems like a zillion other people here have, converter crashing halfway thru and not letting you do it again.
Steam for some stupid reason (which hopefully will be adressed in an update) only lets you convert when creating a new account. So what I did to fix it was to create a new bogus account, just use any email-adress, doesn't have to be valid. this allows you to convert your local half-life files again. Make sure you *only* choose the games from the list that you actually have installed. The first time I chose the games that I wanted to have (like the info says) but instead it tries to convert those games that you don't have as well, resulting in it just stalling infinitely. What games you choose doesn't really matter as you'll get access to all of them anyway. After you've converted just log-out and log-in with your normal account. Hopefully everything should be working great.
Also, like someone else here suggested, use Bittorrent for downloading the mods. It's much much faster than Steam and gives you the latest current version so you don't have to worry about updating.
The torrents I found are:
DOD
CS
TFC
Make sure you have Bittorrent installed before you click the links. Just choose where to save the file and give it a few minutes. Should start downloading pretty soon, much easier than steam. After downloading just extract the gcf's to where Steam stores them, and play
