I built a computer for my girlfriend and things got weird. At first it would shut off after a certain amount of time. I fixed this problem by laying it on the ground as opposed to standing up...and it stayed on. No idea why.

Anyway, thought it may have been the power supply (and since it was really loud, i put a new one in that seems to work. Now it basically stays on for a few seconds and dies.

I figured it was either the power supply, the mobo, heatsink/fan, or the processor but I really don't want to buy new ones to test out this theory. Anyone have any idea what may be going on?

Specs are: Asus A8N mobo, geforce 7900 (i think), 1 gig of ddr2 ram, and i forget what power supply I got. Sorry if that's too little info but thats all I can recall. Any help would be appreciated and you will earn 7 tyguy bucks for your time.

Well, given that the problem was solved by changing the orientation of the case, maybe something could be slightly loose, or maybe something that shouldn't be touching is touching, maybe shorting out ? Just a guess.

I'd guess a short, is the motherboard on the correct prongs connected to the case?

Are all the plugs secure?

Is it the same amount of time every time before it shuts off?

Is your penis more than 6 inches long?

This is why you shouldn't build computers for them.

If it's shutting down after a certain amount of time, it could be a heat related problem, check all your contact surfaces, make sure they have the right amount of thermal paste and such.

It could possibly be your connections. To test the componants it might be a good idea to strip the computer down to mobo, CPU, 1 stick of ram and a PSU. If it doesn't boot from there, swap the ram over, and if it still doesn't boot, change the power supply. Obviously if it still doesn't boot either the cpu or mobo is rooted... If it does, just add componants until it stops booting.

How big is the power supply? You might find if you have something tiny like 350W that it simple doesn't provide enough power to the card...
