D3's physic system is sh|t

haha excellent.. wonder what happens if you spawn a zombie in the room and let them all fall on him?

no physically damage. However, the room is well lit so you can see the detail they put into the monsters. Also, bring down the box stack so there are tons of boxes on the ground and then spawn a trite or a tick. The monster animations are impressive.

Have you guy tried that console command, I think it's g_dragentity, setting it to 1 makes your guns go down and the fire button lets you lift up physics object like the manipulator.

Now that I've avtually played some of Doom 3, I must say the physics system is crappy.

Two reasons:
1. It's crappy (objects don't react correctly)
2. Any actual use of the physics system is extremly rare.

Yeah and doom3 needs a realistic physics system why?

Man why does everything have to be ****ing perfect for HL fans all the time? if you want to only play HL and say "HL this, HL that" then dont even talk about any other game because the game isnt for you, so HL2 will have realistic physics, why? because it uses them extensively. So doom3 has amazing graphics and the best shadowing around, why? because it wouldnt be scary otherwise and uses the graphics extensively and as for shadowing, well...it wouldnt be doom3 if it didnt have the shadows it has got.

So we've come to a conclusion
- Doom3 = amazingly good graphics, sounds, average physics Engine.
- HL2 = amazingly good physics, average graphics Engine.

Nothing, zip, zoop, zada, NOTHING will ever be perfect and game engine's are'nt an exception to that rule. There is no such thing as perfect.

I tried, maybe 85% of the boxes ricochet'd off his head and none made a scratch :\

so I shot him in the face with the BFG.

Its still fun to punch a body off a platform into like a reactor or something :D

although the gibbing into skeleton sorta sucks, but its better than nothing

Just get the Ungibable mod.

Also remember they didn't license the Havok physics engine like Valve did, the Doom3 physics engine was built inhouse.

yeah, thats one thing to remember. Id didnt take the physics engine from some other company, they made their own from scratch so dont complain thats it crappy

Max Payne II has to be the best physics implementation I've played, even though it isn't nessecarly "realistic."

By the way, what's wrong with the HL2 Grahpics Engine? Personally the Doom 3 Graphics don't impress me because 90% of the time I can't see shit.

there are 3 testmaps in Doom 3 try them all.
"map testmaps/test_lotsaimps.map" in console is the most fun it's got all the monsters in Doom 3 all put together in a small room (enable godmode otherwise you're dead in seconds)

I agree, "good graphics" but crappy gameplay.

So what you guys are saying, is that HL2 will actually be the first to implement physics in the gameplay ?

Certainly not the first, but it looks to be a good part of the actual game. Which is nice to see.

The key with HL2 and physics doesn’t necessarily rest on the physics themselves. Shoot, depending on how you define physics, there was an implementation of a physics engine in Half Life 1. Ok, you jump, fall, push boxes (even off edges), etc. The real point is the interactivity of the game.

Take a look at HL2 videos and you’ll see all sorts of interactions that are MOST LIKELY not scripted. What about…
  • Wood breaking & splintering?
  • (supposedly) Rockets deform terrain.
  • Paint Can splattering on wall.
  • Manhack’s interacting with that metal panel (tunnels video).
  • The wood pallet that is launched at the zombie.
  • Everything in the trap town video.
  • Grenade hitting the tire hanging from the tree.
  • Striders blowing up columns on building.
  • Buildings catching on fire.
  • Splashes in water
  • A variety of vehicles
…and I could continue. In HL2, the physics system is a tool for environmental interaction, not just glitter used for decoration purposes only.

How much interactivity is there in the Doom 3 environment? In Doom 3, where are the physics? You actually have to look for physics. I would rate Doom 3’s physics system as a substitute for an excuse. The physics implementation is extremely obviously unrealistic. I could code better myself without too much effort and I know people who have coded better themselves.

I actually enjoyed Max Payne 2’s physics. It wasn’t vital to gameplay nor super-realistic, but you’ve got to admit; it was just freaking cool.

To me the point isn’t the physics, but rather the interactivity. Interactivity a major key point to games. (Why play games vs. watch a movie? Movies look 20x better. Back to square 1: games are interactive.)

Good point, I thaugt that Doom 3 was going to have physics in the gameplay, man, I also thaugt that Doom 3 was competing against HL2, Hehehe, I was wrong.

Yeah, Doom3 isn't even in the same league as HL2.
