So I watched back to the future for the first time last night (I know right?)
I was struck by the scene at the dance when Marty starts playing the guitar and all the kids dancing start swing dancing (I think?) to the music. It was really cool. And then it hit me: WTF happened to actual dancing?
Been to clubs, all they have there is the stupid bump and grind, which while very entertaining when you're doing it with a hot girl, requires almost no skill to perform on an acceptable level. Never went to a prom in high school (ah the joys of homeschooling) but from what I've seen, bump and grind is the only kind of dance being performed.
What happened to dances like swing dancing, etc. that require actual skill and time to learn?
How the hell has this sex-with-your-clothes-on not only become an acceptable dance, but also the only dance currently performed?

Left a club once, a friend asked me how was the girl I was dancing with...and I thought to myself, I wasn't dancing with her, I was ****ing her with clothes in the way... and I know that's pretty much the point, but seriously, sometime I'd like to actually dance...

Anyway, that's just my rant. I'm 20 and sounding like an old geezer. I'll STFU now.

I've beenaasking myself that same question for years....I'm with you, man.

You still see people dancing, but only the rare few that have both the ability and the will.

Peggy-sue, will you come to the dry hump with me tonight? All the coolest cats in town are gonna be there and it sure would make me happy.

I remember my first High School dance, 9th grade. Some Big Bertha's Butt consumed my thigh in her attempt to Butt Dance my crotch.

Yeah I hear ya, OP.

I don't mind the bump and grind if it's just that...foreplay to doing it. But a dance dedicated to dry humping isn't my way of enjoyment, unless i bust a nut of course.

I still dance, whenever there's good music and I feel like it. I'm often one of the only ones though. You got the "dancers" as you described, and the talkers.

The talkers don't do much, they just come and look at everybody while talking. Or not talking at all.

If you go to a rave and you look hard enough people will actually be doing rave dances that require skill ie Melbourne shuffle or techtonic but other than that its all jumping =(

Some clubs are focused around meeting people, so try a different club.

I got a friend who was photographed dancing for Time magazine. I can't explain how awesome it was to watch him and his girlfriend dance together. Very skilled.

Learning to dance requires time. People dont have a lot of free time anymore compared to back when the old dances were popular. Besides, the whole mentality of society has shifted to where the old dances are lame. If I were at some club and everyone started swingin I'd be like "Shit I gotta get outta here. This is ****ing weird."

Also, dancing comes and goes. Every generation gets a new dance.

Man, if I went to a club and there were people swing dancing, and dressed all 40's n shit, I'd get a ****ing erection.

They wouldn't be dressed all 40's n shit. OP is talking about regular people doing swing (or whatever old dance no one under 50 does anymore) whenever they dance.

And yeah, I was about to mention the shuffles. And break dancing takes a hundred times more skill and ability than swing.

Apples and oranges. They both take alot of physical fitness and skill, one with a partner, one without. Don't even try to compare the two.
And I take issue with the idea that people in the 40s had nothing to do so they learned to swing. If by nothing to do you mean no TV and no internet then yeah, they had nothing to do. So they learned to swing instead. At least the obesity rates were better.

Went to a 2 clubs last weekend... 1st one had awesome breakdancing b-boy's, and the second one had more pop/mainstream music causing everyone to simply dance.
I never go to clubs were they dance like what you people talk about... I wish i could though :naughty:

I'm one of the rare (white) guys who actually has dancing skill. Mostly freestyle, but I steal stuff from all sorts of styles for partner stuff like swing, salsa, marrangae (sp?), ballroom, tango... I just picked up a new partner move last Saturday from a bride at a baccalaureate party, then I have it my own twist. I can be a lot of fun and decent exercise, you'll get a fair share of doucehbags trying to make fun of you, but I'm a total club whore and end up with 10x the opportunities they do.

I started dancing almost 20 years ago when I threw a party and had about 100 people in the basement. I was drunk and started by just moving to the music, and other people would bump me, encouraging me to go all out. After a while I was having a blast, and had picked up a lot of moves from everyone around me.

I went to a few clubs, but I'm pretty shy about it, so add lots of liquor and friends.

I wanted to be a drummer since I was about 12 and always practiced tapping to music, so I've always had a lot of rhythm. Because of these things, I can dance really damn good for someone self-taught, but only if I'm really in a certain mood and really feeling it. I can't just dance because there is music playing. I have to feel the lyrics like I completely agree, and the jam should be catchy.

I hate long parts in a song without drums, that always makes me feel stuck in the mud.

I can only dance freestyle, but it's a ton of fun.

If those clubs are anything like some of the ones up my way there isn't room for proper dancing. :/

You just gotta go to good clubs. Most clubs are shit, yes, but search around for a while, you'll find one with good music (and thus good dancing).

Well, good music to dance to. Not all good music can be danced to (in fact a very small part of what I listen to can be danced to).

But any good dancing requires good music, that was my point.

I think you've answered your own question... that and the fact that swing styles themselves were brought in for the same reasons that grinding and waving glow-sticks are now de-facto. There's nothing lamer than dancing like your parents. (Marty Mcfly's parents are a generation ahead of mine after all. My parents certainly didn't do that kind of thing... I now have amusing images of them doing the Hustle in my head that must be banished with something solemn).

Having been in musicals, I've had to dance a bit. Usually takes me four months to half learn a single number. My body just doesn't do what I ask it to, and I can't string instructions together too well!

Itt, people complaining about modern day cultures that they are not a part of.

I like swing dancing. :) I'm not very good at it, but we have a bit of a niche for it at my college. You can tell who the theatre kids are because when a dancy song comes on at a dance, we all start to swing.

It's cute, really.
