Dante's Inferno

oh god this is all kinds of stupid. you didnt know this is based on the Divine Comedy did you?

The poem is written in the first person, and tells of Dante's journey through the three realms of the dead, lasting during the Easter Triduum in the spring of 1300. The Roman poet Virgil guides him through Hell and Purgatory; Beatrice, Dante's ideal woman, guides him through Heaven.

Dante Aligheri:

the resemblence between Dante and the muscle bound sword wielding knight in shining armor in the video game is uncanny

this game could be a good idea if it didnt take itself seriously or try to pass it off as a stupid god of war clone

Didn't Dante just kind of bumble amiably through the afterlife at a leisurely pace?

yes, not battling demon hordes with nothing but sword and a lioncloth

I was going to make a joke about a game version of Canturbury Tales where, in a post-apocalyptic world, a group of survivors/wanderers, so-called 'pilgrims', all stop in a ruined building while on the way to seek the rumour of a secure military bunker in Canturbury in which they could escape the zombie disease that has almost wiped out the population. While encamped, they tell each other stories of how they survived up to this point.

Then I realised that
A) this would be unironically awesome.
B) the frame-story is basically identical to that of The Decameron

Shouldn't everyone know about Dante. I mean that stuff was taught in elementary school.

Hoping the gameplay will be good. Not just mash one button to get huge combos.

The Art style looks amazing, other than that it looks like another clone packaged in a new way from EA.

didnt he go out to see General Lee?

na na na
na na na

damn yankees done killed his brother

this actually looks. . . really cool.

wow. never thought i'd say those words.

however it is a CG trailer and the sole purpose of a cg trailer is to make the game look awesome so i'm waiting for something more substantial

Alright sweet, when do we start mocking American McGee's Alice for having her running through Wonderland on a killing spree?

Not that I expect this game to be good, but just because it's based on literature, (with added fighting!) doesn't mean it's automatically going to be bad.

the only reason why i have hope for this game is because its being developed by the exact same guys who made Dead Space.

not the same thing because they justified it:

The game's setting presents a considerably more macabre rendition of Wonderland than that of Lewis Carroll's original portrayal. Wonderland, being a creation of Alice's mind, has been corrupted by her insanity.

this just looks like God of War set in hell, it doesnt resemble the poem in the least

So as long as they make up some justification it's alright? Ok cool.

So you like your games repetitive? So you like your games repetitive? So you like your games repetitive? So you like your games repetitive? So you like your games repetitive?

People who think this is gonna be based off the actual Dante's Inferno poem/story are idiots. It almost certainly looks like all they are doing is using Dante's version of hell. And they're doing the typical thing where they give it a name tie-in to make it popular. Like, the movie "I Robot" was perfectly capable of just being a movie about Robots, but they changed a few names and added in the Three Laws so they could put Asimov's name on it.

This game is God of War in Dante's version of Hell. Nothing more.

Thank god for expired copyrights.

They shoulda made a Paradise Lost game though

because they couldnt possibly make a game out of the original poem. right, which is what people are saying, k thanks for clearing that up

Eh, has potential but I doubt it will be good.

Why has no one made a game on the Odyssey?

Actually, this is definitely true. You could either do an RTS of the rebellion in heaven, or a sneaking game where Satan has to travel through Chaos and infiltrate Eden, avoiding Heaven's crack troops.

that just looks so unoriginal that is not even funny

I havent read the whole poem but wasnt the protagonist scared and was escorted by a angel?

I wouldn't call him an angel, he inhabited the Inferno.

Was anyone else expecting something a little more... I don't know, high-brow? I mean, if you're gonna call the game "Dante's Inferno" you should probably try to preserve the important themes of the literary work. Obviously those would be pretty hard to make a game from, but if you're making a "God of War in Hell" you think they could have called it something else. The kids going into GameStop aren't even going to know what Dante's Inferno is, and everyone that does know would probably think it's pretty ridiculous.

Quite interesting. I hope they will use some references from Gustav Dore's illustrations...they are just epic.

I think this game is going to kickass EA Redwood proved themselves with Dead Space for me. Looking forward to it just knowing they are behind this.

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle 'redid' Inferno, where a recently deceased science fiction writer who went to hell retraces Dante's steps. It's a damn fine read in my opinion, and if the game was written like this, it could be seriously entertaining (although how you'd fight back and who you'd fight back against within the first few rings is anyone's guess). The setting is ripe for a good story though.

...watching a movie with the wife (she's in the loo just now), so I'll check the trailer when we're done.

The italian poet is surely spinning in his grave... (which, in fact, is located in my hometown)

"His milky skin isn't the result of a vitamin deficiency - mild spoiler - it's because he's stained with the ashes of his dead family. Rather than stroll ponderously through Hell like the poem, Dante's fighting his way through Lucifer's minions to save his lost love, Beatrice, who has been killed and wrongly sent to Hell. "

Blatent rip off of God of War. Hate it when games do this, just becasue of this Im boycotting this b@stard Kratos wannabe

Where is that quote from? That is pretty damn shameless if true.

If this is supposed to be Dante's version of hell then what's the player going to kill? The poor helpless souls stuck halfway into the ground? The devil, who is also immobile and who sits there eating those 2 people? Francesca and Paulo?

The devil is eating Cassius, Brutus and Judas.

Oh yeah, but it's not like the player is going to kill them either.

Yes, an immobile Satan will be marvellous, especially as it is emphasized that he is so powerless and insensate that he doesn't notice two people crawling down his back. Truly, a fearsome foe. I would love to see their take on Paolo and Francesca. For our less well-read members, they are two of the principal characters Dante meets in the second circle of Hell, the one dedicated to punishing the Lustful. They committed adultery. Not vile and perverse sexual acts, no, they simply kissed and betrayed their spouse's trust. As I recall they are ashamed and regretful of what they did...

My guess? Boss monster.

Incorporating Gustave Dor?'s artwork would be amazing however.

Also, Beatrice is in Heaven. Dante meets her there in Paradiso. This game flats contradicts canon. It is absolutely absurd.

Immobile Satan would remind me of Shadow of the Collossus.
