In the spirit of silent hillish and lovecraftian horror, this would be an incredibly dark and atmospheric mod. I am currently trying to get a team together to start development. The first person perspective is a really great view that isn't used much. A good example is 'They Hunger', a mod for half-life that came out a few years ago. The source engine is the perfect engine to create a dark and truely scary game.
Basic story (obviously still under development):
Steven Phillips, a 29 year old writer, is on vaction travelling across the east coast with his wife. While stoped at a small town, his wife dissapears. He searches everywhere, goes to the police and finally after monthes of searching he gives up. Over a year later, steven is living in a medium-sized town in new york state. One day he gets a call from a man claiming to know information about his wife's dissappearnce. The game begins here. He goes to the location the man on the phone told him to meet at. A sleazy hotel in the middle of town. He is told to go to the basement and take the elevator. He does as instructed, going down the stairs to a dark, damp basement. He finds the elevator, practically an antique, and desends farther then seems possible. When he arrives at the bottem, a hardly lit, grimey looking hallway meets him and he proceeds to a door at the end. Inside he finds the mutilated and dismembered body of his wife, along with several other people. Before he has time to do anything, he hears some noises and turns to find a horrible, impossible creature with no definable face shambaling towards him.
Thats the basic backstory. Ideally, everything after entering the hotel will be player controlled so the game has some time to build up suspense and anxity.
Most of the game revolves around surviving, and not particularly fighting. There will be challenges and peices of the story to link together. A breif outline of the story afterwards would be:
-finds one or two small weapons and escapes the basement of the hotel.
-Returns to the surface to find everything horribly twisted and malformed.
-When he finally emerges outside, he finds the town dark and lightless, with a black sky that has no moon.
-the game will mostly take place in that town, eventually leading to a few other places, including the small coastal town that his wife originally dissapared at.
A few weapons in the game will be:
-knife
-steel fire poker
-axe
-small revovler
-shotgun
-hunting rifle
also a few makeshift weapons, such as:
-flamethower (arasol can and lighter)
-dynamite (black powder, container, and a fuse)
-Buzzsaw (craftsman saw and battery pack)
A flashlight will also be a critical part of your inventory, although i dont know yet if you should have batteries or if it should be unlimited (it would be a pain to have batteries, but it would create a very cool effect if when your batteries got low the light started to fade and maybe blinked out a few times)
The weapons will not include any of the normal 'heavy artillary' that is common in most FPS'. No machine guns, rocketlauchers, or anything else like that. The strongest gun will probably be the hunting rifle.
As for monsters, if havent really come up with anything in particular, but if you want examples just take a look at anything from H.P. lovecraft or some of the diabolical creations from silent hill 1 or 2 (I thought SH3's monsters were kinda tame compared to the rest of them, with the exception of 'closers' )
Clealy i haven't really started working on this yet, just brainstorming.
The most immediate posistion that needs to be filled is website designer, but I could use anyone who is willing to help, escpecially anyone with any previous modding experience.
