Dark Messiah: Might and Magic is 20$ on steam now (same price at Compusa). Is it worth it?

Hell yeah, at $20 you can't go wrong with anything.
I'll probably buy it myself now.

The $50 price tag it had on it before was way too much for so little.

It's a high quality game, You will be blown away as soon as the game starts and you are in the training level, and the graphics in some levels are insane.

Hopefully your PC can do the HDR stuff well, because that makes it.

I paid $50 and never really played it past a few levels. It keeps crashing if I try to change the graphics settings (worse than HL2 complete with the sound looping of no return) and with the horrible loading times (I guess that means it uses all of your RAM? or - it's doing some decompressing in real time for slightly better textures), it went well beyond starting to piss me off. I plan to get back in there and progress eventually. I would love to run it nicely at full settings because it's really nice looking

There are some good things about it I didn't expect, and some disappointments here and there, but I recommend it.

I bought it at retail when it came out, and I enjoyed it. Not sure if it was worth $50, but I really liked their take on melee combat in a FPS. Definitely worth spending $20 on though. However, I bought the DVD version, and when I tried to register it with steam, it wouldn't let me play it. Also, some people have had trouble with one or both of the patches, so you might wanna do a little research and find out if specific hardware has issues with it.

Same reason i stopped, game was great and had VERY good GFX. Planning on getting back to it with my new pc.

This game'd never crashed in my computer.
It is not a bad game, but don't expect too much.

I'd say it's worth a grab at $20.

The core gameplay is pretty damn good. The melee combat is fun, intuitive, and unique. Nothing compares to the feeling of hacking and slashing through enemies, booting enemies off cliff sides left and right, and then impaling your last foe on your sword before yanking your blade from his chest with your foot.

But it has a good amount of bugs, glitches, and technical problems. The legendary stutter problems seem far more pronounced with this game, and the game just refuses to show cutscene videos on some computers. Most of the game in between combat is just boring filler, and while level design is often pretty, a lot of the time it's done in a way that makes figuring out where to go a problem. The story can be predicted within the first ten minutes as well.

The most interesting bit (or the most damning/hilarious) of the game is the female characters. You can tell that this was meant to appeal to the stereotypical, sexless, male gamer. The cute "girl next door" character falls for you within a day of meeting her, but the one that accompanies you through 80% of the game might as well be a big, moaning vagina. Every second line is sexual innuendo of some kind, and it often sounds like she's bordering on having an orgasm with some lines. I don't think I've ever been hit on by a game character so hard. You can either knock it, laugh at it, or - I dunno - enjoy it if you wish to, I guess. Just be warned.

If you pick this up, you're picking it up for the melee combat. And that is very fun. But realize that few other things about it live up to the quality of that aspect.

I got it for $10 at target! Clearance + employee discount ftw.

I was hoping for a version of the game where everything is made of M&Ms. :(

Oh crikey, even with Tax, thats roughly ten pounds where I live, I might buy it when I actually have money in the bank ;)

Graphically I thought Dark Messiah was pretty lame, especially in outdoor areas - village graphics are particularly poor. Well optimised though and will run smoothly on lower spec machines. Storyline? forget it, it feels as though it has been stapled on as an afterthought.

But the part of this game that shines is your ability to interact more with the world and your opponent during combat, making confrontations interesting and different every time.
The ability to kick bad guys and throw objects is something that all modern fps should have, other developers should follow suit.
Rope arrows and shield bashing are other well implemented features that use this great engine to it's full extent.

Fun but aimless, will leave you disappointed that you can't kick your opponent off ledges in other games.

Worth a tenner.

You need to get your eyes checked if you thought that game was shit graphic-wise.

Perhaps. Agreed, the lighting and interior atmosphere is v.good, but then unexpectedly, you come across big lumps of shat like these:

The first 2 are from an interactive cutscene, but the town itself looks the same. There are several places like this throughout the game that just don't fit in with the rest of the environments. Sloppy.
And don't get me started on the sulky moo with the helium filled breasts.

I don't get it. What is wrong with the graphics as you describe it?

These are the problems I had:
crashing
Very long loading times
Very MEH upgrade paths
Very Repetitive finishing move
Very repetitive enemies
Very Repetitive speech
Some nerdy voice acting/narration
Made my own sword and it was barely any better, and looked the same.

I'd still buy it again though for $20, because there are some really cool things about it too. Kicking boxes into the the dressers and just generally roughing shit up is fun. Awesome adrenaline ability.

It's hard to remember, but I think you can cut arms off, and cut enemies in half and shit with a critical under adrenaline or something.

Wow, this game is highly debated indeed. I'm sitting here downloading the demo once again to play it once again to see if it really is worth $20 or not.

Oh, I don't think anyone's mentioned the amusingly horrid voice acting yet...

There's amusingly horrid voice acting all around.

Me said:

I agree.

I installed the game and ran it, and had the volume up real high for the opening cinematics, expecting to be blown away by someone of Gandalf caliber, and became embarrassed by the Ultra nerdy narrator voice. I had to quickly turn down the volume.

I wouldn't recommend it unless it were free. The gameplay is linear, the melee combat is awkward and clunky, magic is meh, and overall it's an extremely bland game that brings nothing new to the table.

Multiplayer is kinda fun though.

$20 is not a bad price. I paid $50 for it (I wasn't going to but a friend convinced me, needless to say that's the last time I took advice from him) and was disappointed, and felt it should be priced around the budget game range ($20-$30). It is a good game for $20.

The kick ability for me was a lot of fun, that and the adrenaline attacks. Also, some of the boss battles were kinda cool.

I've been playing through the game again this time on hard. For some reason the game is unbelievably difficult in the beginning on hard mode. I still feel bad that I paid $50 when it came out on steam, but overall it is a fun game. I still don't see why it makes any sense to play the game other than as a warrior though.

I'm definitely thinking about buying it, I had loads of fun with the demo... the only thing that pissed me off was how unbelievably long the load times were.
