Introversion's Darwinia is now available to gamers worldwide via Steam. It's is "a captivating mix of multiple genres including real-time strategy, arcade, and puzzle games." It could alternatively be described, perhaps, as Space Invaders crossed with Tron crossed with Cannon Fodder....on acid. Anyway, it's brilliant. If you want to find out more, visit the Darwinia website or try out the demo if you haven't already.

You should know enough about it by now to make your decision - Darwinia is available to buy as of now. And we heartily recommend it. [br]

YEAH. Finally, Valve. It was about time.

Weeeeee. I am so happy.

Wow, I didn't pay much attention to the coverage for this because it looked....weird.

But goddamn this is fun and addictive. Well worth the 10 buck fee.

Fun and seriously addictive. But annoying when you scrape objectives, like how I managed to save only 145 Darwinians and had to convert my officers back... :x

DiSTuRbEd, Valve released DOD:S on 3pm in September... so I was thinking it would be out at 3.

EDIT: I have a headache... I played for too long without a break.

Now, I don't wanna be a party-pooper, but I personally think that this game isn't as good as it's reputation.

I've seen the game and played it quite much at my friend's place, mainly to find that no matter how much I try to find the addictive hook, the gameplay is just very, very dull and simple. Only thing that kept my interest up for so long was the exciting "computerized" design that Introversion has held up since they released Uplink (which by the way rocked and still does), there's not much of a strategic element included in this game as I kinda hoped and expected.

I want my Uplink 2. :(

If you guys want to know why VALVe was a few minutes behind in releasing the game, check out this post Erik Johnson made in the Darwinia forums.

There is a fairly humorous reason why the release was a few minutes later than what we planned which I'd like to share.

When we do a new release of a product on Steam, it's still a pretty exciting event for us. We're generally tracking the exact time down to the second, and hit the appropriate button at the instant that we announced it would happen. Right before that, there is generally a very quick dry run where we launch the game just to make sure that everything has been configured properly on the Steam side of things. The button pressing ceremony generally takes place in Alfred Reynolds' office.

This time, when Alfred ran the dry run of the game before it was activated, pure chance dictated that the "DMA Crew" Darwinia boot loader came up. Apparently Alfred had seen something like this in his past, and he panicked thinking that the build had been tampered with somehow. The release came griding to a halt while Alfred was trying to find the number for Introversion. Once we all recovered from the stomach pains from laughing so hard, we managed to get it released. We're all doing much better now.

Anyhow, that's why we missed the release time by a few minutes. Hope everyone is enjoying the game.

Erik

Christmas mode?
From the patch readme:
***************************************

============
VERSION 1.41
============

- German language translation added

===================
VERSION 1.4 (STEAM)
===================

- Translations extracted to language file for:
key controls eg "ALT", "TAB", "Enter", "Space"
mouse controls eg "Left Click", "Right click"
control events eg "Display task manager" (used in Control options screen)

- Fixed : small bug that would add a space to strings eg 'TAB ' would be read
from the language file instead of 'TAB'

- Added option to Main Menu to open the Darwinia website

- Steam changes:
- Default language is read from
HKEY_CURRENTUSER\software\valve\steam\language
- Modified Christmas mode so it only occurs on December 25th and 26th.
(Because the steam launch is December 14th, and Christmas mode would
have been enabled by default for everyone on launch day)

Probably a joke, but if it isn't it'll be rather amusing. I could try changing my system clock to see if it activates this so-called Christmas mode but I can't be bothered, someone else change theirs :D

oh no, it's real.

you get snow all over, and some of the darwinians are wearing little santa hats.

wheeeee!

i wonder if other holidays have fun stuff, too...

Introversion is extremly against sequels and expansion. They don't feel they're as original as brand new titles and choose not to make them.

I'm currently trying the demo - cool so far, but I'm still not sure about bothering to buy it yet...

Me likes it :)

Yeah, the 4 times I've started it, I've seen 4 different intros. Very cool and a nice touch. As to the rest of it, great game indeed. :smoking:
